First Yell County Arkansas Post Office

Historical Marker presented for Monrovia, Arkansas

Belleville The Yell County Historical and Genealogical Society in co-operation with the Dardanelle Rock Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented a historic marker for the town of Monrovia during a dedication ceremony. The marker is located on Arkansas 10 at the intersection in Belleville. Monrovia is located 2 1/2 miles south of this location.

Guests were welcomed by Belleville Mayor Boyce Page, Dardanelle Rock Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Regent Georgiana Tatum and Yell County Historical Society President Gloria Craig.

Monrovia was the location of the first temporary county seat in Yell County. It was the home of WILLIAM PEAVEY, a race horse enthusiast from Tennessee. In 1828, it became the location of the first post office in the interior of the county with PEAVEY as post master. Twin log cabins were located on this property which became home, county seat and post office. There are no longer any remains of these buildings.
