"Burnham Overy and the surrounding area is the ancient seat of the THURLOW family. Three brother's William, Hugh and Thomas owned the lands there in the late 1400s. My guess is that Nicholas THURLOW at Cottenham was born there. Edward THURLOW, the 1st Baron Thurlow, and Lord Chancellor of Great Britain during the reign of King George III is descended from this family." Information from David Weston

According to Walter Courtenay Pepys William is the beginning of the "Impington Branch" and all "Surviving Pepys." However WCP says little is known of him as there are no records in Cottenham church records or Impington of his line. There are local deeds and such like documents 1521-1553/5 in Cottenham that presumably belong to William (II) and would suggest that he died after 1553. A law suit in 1553 says William Pepes and Eleanor his wife. Which suggest another marriage. After that there are many records of William Pepys in South Creake, Burnhams and Yaxham.

It would appear that William (II) acquired the manor of Neals (Holkham) in 1533. This Manor later reverted to Thomas son of John, just before his death in 1569. William II married Alice of Wighton, Norfolk. And Richard son of Thomas married Margart Boston of Burnham Westgate, and was buried in Holkham Church. It seems that although William is the beginning of the Impington line he and his sons were probably established in Norfolk. The earliest church register records for a William in Cottenham are 1609 onwards. These belong to children's names that are given to William (III). by EC, but dates would suggest another generation in between (or some of the same names appeared in two generations).

There are records of a William Pepys in Burnham, South Creake (including baptisms) and then Yaxham that begin in 1547 (apart from the 1533 item above). The entry for 1547 says that Thomas Pepys admitted post mort John Pepys and surrended to use of William Pepys (III).

Entries for William Pepys Sr. (III) of Yaxham continue up to 1599 and then William Pepys Jr (IV) of Yaxham up to 1606. Circumstantially this last entry is suggestive because the entries in Cottenham registers start just after this.

William married Alice Smith 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 daughter of John Smith and Catherine Barnesdale about 1523 in Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, England. Alice was born estimated 1498 in Wighton, Norfolk, England. Alice was living, mentioned in will of her brother-in-law John Pepys 6 on 10 May 1541.
