Talbot Pepys inherited the Manor of Impington which his father John had bought with his wife's dowry. His father died in 1589 and 6 years old Talbot became squire in the guardianship of his elder brother's; John of Cottenham, Thomas the Red, Apollo and Thomas the Black. (Arthur Bryant 15)

Notes: CUA: show a Talbot Pepys or Peapes entered Kings in 1595. This would seem a little early (Talbot was 12 years old), but this is the first Talbot Pepys presumably named for his mother Edith Talbot.

It would seem likely from dates and names that dau. Paulina was probably by second marriage, i.e. to Paulina.

The representative, at the time of the Commonwealth (1649 - 59), of the Pepys family at Impington was Talbot Pepys. He was uncle of Samuel Pepys, the diarist. He was Recorder of Cambridge from 1624, and Member of Parliament for Cambridge in 1625. Though the Vicar of the parish was not ejected during this time, he seems to have lost the right of keeping the parish registers. This became a civil function, as can be seen in the paragraph dealing with our parish registers. Talbot Pepys appointed a registrar in 1653, but personally signed the marriage certificates of that time. Amongst these entries there are not only the marriages of Impington residents, but also of those belonging to the surrounding district. In 1657, a couple from Willingham were married, and a couple from Cottenham. Also in that year there is recorded in the Impington register the marriage of a man from Horningsea and a woman from Fenditton. During six years Talbot Pepys authorised forty-five of these civil weddings. He steered his way carefully during the Civil War and Protectorate and was still Recorder of Cambridge at the Restoration in 1660, when he resigned in favour of his son. He died, aged 84, in 1665. IGI has references to the marriage under Rampton. Dr of lawes ?

She was Katherine, widow of Thomas Hobson of Cottenham. Thomas Hobson was a carrier in Cambridge. He leased a large estate in Waterbeach and is the source of the saying, "Hobson's Choice." (Information from Edward Sinker).

He was on 30 Sep 1604 in Impington, Cambridge, England. He was employed as confectioner. He was living 14 in 1610. He was mentioned in the will of his father 15 on 21 Mar 1610. He was elected churchwarden with John Peapes on 23 Apr 1622 in St. Marys Cambridge. He signed a will on 28 Sep 1636. He had a will probated 16 on 9 Dec 1636.

EC says that this could be the John who married Elizabeth Tydswell 1604 in Impington, or Elizabeth Mellor in 1608 in Histon, or both in succesion. According to EC the John Pepys who married Elizabeth was baptised 23 Jan 1585. However, this would make him only 17 on marriage to Elizabeth Tydswell. There are three John Pepys on VRI born to a Robert Pepys in Cottenham. However, the parish register shows the second John's baptism very close to Martyrius, and the third John as being of Norfolk, and this last entry coincides with the burial of Barbara wife of Robert.

I assume that the earlier baptism is John confectioner of Cambridge who married Elizabeth. The children are listed by name, but no other details in EC. There are also some births and marriages in Berkshire that would match some of these names. It is not clear if two John's may have been conflated. There is one baptism found in Cottenham records that clashes with a baptism in Cambridge records and so there may have been another John in Cottenham.

The only piece that does not appear to fit is that the baptism of Elizabeth seems to fall before the marriage.

Abstract of will of John Peaps: And for my body I will that shalbe decently buried in the Churchyard of the parrish Church of great St Maries in Cambr. aforesaid on the east side of the South porch of the said parrish Church in the grave where my brother Marterius Peaps was buried... The burial of the wife of John Peaps is recorded in the churchwardens accounts of St. Mary's.

This first baptism seems to be somewhat early and predates the two possible marriages for John Pepys however, the will of John would seem to indicate that Elizabeth was born in the first marriage.

John married 3, 4 (2) Elezebeth Meller 1, 2 on 5 Jun 1608 in St. Andrew, Histon, Cambridge, England. Elezebeth was born estimated 1585. She was buried 5 on 22 Jul 1641 in Great St. Marys, Cambridge, England. Elezebeth was executrix of husbands will in 1626.

EC. says that there is uncertainty about her surname. There was John Pepys married Elizabeth Tydswell in Impington in 1604, or John Pepys married Elizabeth Mellor in Histon in 1608. Or he could have married both in succesion.

Marriage before 1636 as per will of father John. So the only gap in baptism where there seems to be room for another child is 1609.

Katherine coudl be a child of previous marriage of John to Katherine birth order is based upon will of John Peaps that lists Elizabeth, Katherine, Phoebe. Katherine is the only one that is married so possibly Elizabeth's inheritance was mentioned first because she was still unmarried.

Baptism: 14 Mar ... EC does not give the year of baptism presumably he left out the year because it conflicted with a baptism of a John. Some uncertainty about his name. Bartyrius on BVRI. Martyrins on Freereg. Wauterius in will of his father. Comparison of entries suggests Martyrius to be correct and this is most consistent with children's baptism entries. The family of Matryius baptised in Cambridge do not appear in either EC or WCP.

I am making the assumption that Matthew Pepys in Boyds marriage index who is otherwise unacounted for is Martyrius, the date of marriage fits.

Martyrius married 2 Barbara Woolfe 1 on 28 May 1609 in Doddington, Cambridge, England. Barbara was born estimated 1586. She was buried 3 on 1 May 1642 in St. Marys the Great, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. Barbara was mentioned in churchwardens records as widow Peapes in 1634.
