[There appears to be gap in the Burnham Westgate records after about 1583 to 1600. Brisley records run 1600-1812 with gaps.There is also gap in the Archdeacons' transcripts between 1625-29

Edwin Chappel showed this Richard having an earlier marriage to Maria Pleasuance who had a will of 1640 this is incompatible with the marriage to Francis. There is also a deed that refers to Richard Pepys Sr. and his wife Mary. It appears to make more sense for there to be a missing generation of Richard Sr. son of William + Lucy, and children of Richard Pepys (Jr.) and Jane and Ann.

Thomas Pepys who married Ann Whe(a)lety in Norwich, is of Brisley. His baptism would fit in the gap in 1628, but he is not mentioned in willl or Richard. But possibly the will is limited to a few specific items.

Childrens dates of birth are from IGI except Samuel and Daniel from Cambridge University Alumni. This would indicate that the dates from IGI are too early. For example Theodore is described as the youngest son in Richard's will below.]

Death: there is a record of the death of Richard Peapes vicar (Clerk) of Gateley in 23 Jan 1662 and Richard Pepis Rector of Brisley on 23 Aug 1662. I do not know what to make of these similar records.

Abstract of Will: 1659 July 12. Richard Peppes of Brisley, clerk. To my son Samuel all those MSS. which I had of my nephew Richard Pepys late of Lynn. To my son Daniel the rest of my library, exept for Mr. Perkins his works, and Bishop Babington's works. Frances my wife executrix. To my daughter Amy Peppes. To my youngest son Theodore.

Richard married Frances 1, 2, 3, 4 about 1621 in of, Burnham Westgate, Norfolk, England. Frances was born estimated 1595. She died about 1673 in Brisley, Norfolk, England. Frances was mentioned in and executrix of her husband's will 5 on 10 Mar 1661. She signed a will in 1673 in Brisley, Norfolk.

A Francis Peeps wife of Richard was buried in St. Clement Norwich in 1673, this would fit this Frances except that there are also baptisms that fall after the death of this Richard. There is presumably another Richard and Frances in Norwich.

IGI has a death of Daniel 11 Apr 1703. which they ascribe to Daniel born about 1718 (sic) of Richard Pepys this is actualy the death of Samuel. There is a Daniel born to Richard Pepys and Frances in 1618 in Burnham Westgate. This could suggest that Richard married Frances before 1618, But this Daniel would not seem to match the Cambridge Alumni records.

Theodore is described as youngest son in his father''s will and so clearly the dates as per IGI are wrong.

This could be the Theodore Pipps who married Mary Wilmot in 1666.

Not shown by EC. This family appears to be the earliest of Kings Lynn. The puzzle at first was that there were a number of Pepys born to Robert in Cottenham and some of the baptisms were too close together untill it was realised that there were two Robert Pepys in Cottenham having children.

[There are some differences between WCP and the IGI in the following line. WCP shows a marriage of William Pepys (William+Lucy) and Peace Pepys. WCP shows a marriage of Robert (Richard+Anne, William+Lucy) and Grace. The IGI shows a first child, Richard of Richard+Anne who is not shown by WCP. The IGI shows children of Robert+Grace = Richard, William, and Peace. These match the children of Robert and Grace according to WCP.]

[EC has the marriage of Richard to Maria as a first Marriage of Richard of Brisley who married Frances. But the dates of Maria'a death conflict with the Brisley family. The court rolls below indicate that Richard Sr. + Mary is father to Richard who married Ann and Jane - I have thus inserted Richard + Maria between the Generations - AP

Residence: Deeds indicate that Burnham Sutton is the place of residence. Burnham Sutton cum Ulphe registers start in 1653 and so the various baptisms have not been found. They are not in Burnham Westgate and so I have assumed that they were in Burnham Sutton.]

[EC has John Stevenson as per the will of Richard Pepys. Other sources show Steventon. We might assume that his name is the reason for the naming of Steventon Pepys born 1694 a child of William and Mary, grandchild of Richard.]

It woudl seem likely that this is Thomas Pepys mentioned in the will of Richard Bunting.

Presumably this is the John Pepys referred to in a document of 11th of Charles I as one of those remaining in London against the proclamation of the crown.

Mileham was the birth place of that eminent lawyer, Sir Edward Coke. He was born at the old Hall, which has been pulled down, and a farm house built on the site. In the early part of his career he was made Recorder of Norwich, and then of London ; he was subsequently appointed Solictor-General to Queen Elizabeth, and Speaker of the House of Commons. He was afterwards chosen Attorney-General, which office he continued under King James, who successively appointed him Chief Justice of both benches. He died Sept. 3rd, 1634, in the 83rd year of his age ; and a sumptuous altar tomb was erected to his memory in church. From History of Mileham.

According to EC this is John Pepys mentioned in Richard Bunting's will. Presumably referred to as John Pepys Jr. to distinguish from John Pepys his uncle. 1601 Dec. 11. Richard Bunting of South Creake, Norfolk, gentleman. Among numerous bequests-To Former Peppys and John Peppes senior, Thomas Peppes and John Peppes junior, of South Creake. [Edwin Chappel may have misread the will: I assume that this may actually refer to his daugher Meriall married to Henry Lancaster His two daughters, Meriall and Anne do not appear to be mentioned, but are presumably not dead as only two children are mentioned as dead.]

In the parish church of Mileham in Norfolk, is the following quaint epitaph: In memory of Mr Fermor Pepys, sometime of the Parish, of a worthy descent most happy nature, choicest educationa tried faith to God, a persecuted church, a banished Prince and his old friend. He was born and bred a gentleman, baptisedand lived a Christian, died a believerand lives a Saint. Ob. Sept. 22 nd , 1660, aged 79.

Fermor married Jane Armiger 1, 2, 3 on 3 Nov 1630 in North Creake, Norfolk, England. Jane was born about 1581. She died after 1660. Jane was mentioned in and executrix of husband's will 4 on 26 Mar 1667.

EC: 'Widow of Lancaster'. This may have been based upon a misreading of the will "son and daughter Lancaster could refer to Meriall Pepys and husband Henry Lancaster, not son and daughter by previous marriage. Marriage in North Creake is to Jane Armiger woud seem to confirm this. AP

By comparing Cambridge University Alumni notes and Exeter Wills, This would appear to be the Fermor Peepes who married Grace Weekes and the Fermori Pepps who had a will probated in Exeter, Devon.

Amongst Wills and Adminstrations proved in the court of the Bishop of Exeter. Is one for Femori Pepps, Clerk, Braunton A. 1671.

EC does not show a marriage for William and shows three children, Elleanor, George and Frances. Two of these names appear on VRI as children of William: Elleanor and George, plus Richard, Robert, and Sarah also.
However the dates of children by these names would seem to require another generation in between.

The marriage to Elizabeth Wickstead would appear to fit better with John of Cambridge. Perhaps the marriage property rights document contains information that would clarify this.
