Descendants of Thomas Pepys

Tenth Generation

382. Grace Pepys (Peapes) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 (Thomas , Nicholas , John , Richard , Richard , Thomas , William , Robert , Thomas ) was christened on 19 May 1661 in St. Margaret, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England. She died after 9 Aug 1720 in London, England. Grace was mentioned in the will of her father as married 8 on 13 Mar 1688/1689.

Grace married Capt. Samuel Foster 1, 2, 3 on 13 Nov 1681 in St. Margaret, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England. Samuel was born estimated 1659. Samuel was mentioned in the wil of his father-in-law Thomas Pepys 4 on 13 Mar 1688/1689. He was living 5 on 9 Aug 1720.

They had the following children:

480 M i Samuel Foster was christened 1 on 14 Dec 1682 in St. Margaret's, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England.
481 F ii Dorothy Foster was christened 1 on 19 Dec 1686 in St. Nicholas, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England.

I wonder if the following is a miss-transcrition of :Sam'

387. Thomas Pepys 1, 2 (Nicholas , Nicholas , John , Richard , Richard , Thomas , William , Robert , Thomas ) was christened on 24 Jul 1663 in All Saints, South Lynn, Norfolk, England. He died before 1753. Thomas was living, mentioned in the will of uncle Thomas in 1688.

Given that his father Nicholas is placed in South Lynn in 1663, then this likely the Thomas who married Susanna.

This could be Thomas son of Nicholas.
From this it would seem that the Lynn line of Peeps did not continue. AP

Thomas married Susanna Butcher daughter of Thomas Butcher and Ann on 29 Oct 1691 in All Saints, South Lynn, Norfolk, England. Susanna was christened on 26 Jul 1668 in Swafham, Norfolk, England. She was buried on 30 Dec 1753 in All Saints, South Lynn, Norfolk, England.

Given the relative distinctiveness of the name Susanna I feel reasonably confident in placing this Susanna as daugher of Thomas and baptised Swaffham. There is a Susan Butcher in 1655 in Yarmouth. There is a Robert Butcher who also married in Kings Lynn and had children.

Prior to that records are patchy - there was a Thomas Butcher baptised in Holt in 1630 son of William, but Holt and Swaffham are not close. William also had a son George which is a very slim hint at the possible origin of an unrecorded George in the family of Thomas an Susanna.

A Susan Pepys (widow) was buried in South Lynn on 30 Dec 1753.

Thomas and Susanna had the following children:

482 M i Thomas Pepis was christened 1 on 4 Sep 1692 in South Lynn, Norfolk, England. He was buried on 18 Apr 1718 in All Saints, South Lynn, Norfolk, England.

A Thomas Pepis was buried 18 Apr 1718 South Lynn, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England.
The question arises was this Thomas Sr. or Jr.?
483 M ii John Pepis was christened 1 on 21 Mar 1695 in South Lynn, Norfolk, England. He was buried 2 on 11 Jan 1698/1699 in South Lynn, Norfolk, England.
+ 484 F iii Mary Pepis (Pepys)
485 M iv William Pepis was christened 1 on 5 Apr 1702 in South Lynn, Norfolk, England. He was buried 2 on 19 Feb 1720/1721 in South Lynn, Norfolk, England.

402. Samuel Pepys (Peeps) 1, 2, 3, 4 (John , William , William , William , Richard , Thomas , William , Robert , Thomas ) was christened 5 on 26 Jan 1695/1696 in Congregational Church, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. Samuel was administration of the estate of his grandfather, George Spilman Jr. in 1716. He was granted Administration. of his father's estate 6 on 6 Aug 1723.

The IGI record appears as "Peeps".

He was buried 7 on 14 Jun 1729 in St. Gregory by St. Paul, London, England. Robert was living (minor) 8 in 1677. He obtained a marriage license on 3 Mar 1702 in Faculty Office.

Faculty Office Marriage Licence Allegations for 3 mar 1702.
I assume the date of marriage 1701(from Boyds) requires double dating.
IGI: It is pure speculation on my part to place Robert married Eldred and had first child Peace, as Robert son of Robert and Peace.

Robert married 3 Eldred Blackbey 1, 2 on 3 Mar 1701/1702 in St. Peter Cornhill, London, England. They obtained a marriage license 4 on 3 Mar 1702 in Faculty Office. Eldred was born estimated 1671 in of, Nutfield, Surrey, England.

They had the following children:

487 F i Peace Pepys 1, 2 was born on 28 Apr 1705. She was christened 3 on 6 May 1705 in St. Benet Paul's Wharf, London, England.
488 F ii Charity Pepys 1, 2 was born on 31 Oct 1706. She was christened 3 on 24 Nov 1706 in St. Benet Paul's Wharf, London, England.
Charity married John Crasier on 8 Jul 1729 in Fleet Prison and Rules of the Fleet, London, England.

490 F iv Eldrid Pepys 1, 2 was born on 3 Oct 1712. She was christened 3 on 12 Oct 1712 in St. Benet Paul's Wharf, London, England.
491 M v Robert Pepys 1, 2 was born on 13 Jan 1713/1714. He was christened 3 on 29 Jan 1713/1714 in St. Benet Paul's Wharf, London, England. He was buried 4 on 21 Jun 1715 in St. Gregory by St. Paul, London, England.

409. William Pepys 1, 2, 3, 4 (Robert , Richard , Richard , William , Richard , Thomas , William , Robert , Thomas ) was christened on 10 May 1674 in St. Andrew, Gatton, Surrey, England.

There is a William Pepys of Ryegate who married Ann Chalton.

William married Bertha 1, 2 estimated 1699 in of, Gatton, Surrey, England. Bertha was born estimated 1680.

They had the following children:

493 M i William Pepys 1, 2 was born estimated 1701 in St. Andrew, Gatton, Surrey, England. William served in the military in H.M.S. "Cumberland". Administration to admon. to mother in Mar 1741 3

of HMS Cumberland, WCP.

Death 1741 according to IGI.

428. Steventon Pepys (I) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 (William , Richard , Richard , William , Richard , Thomas , William , Robert , Thomas ) was christened 8 on 12 Aug 1694 in St. Christopher le Stocks, London, England. He was buried 9 on 19 Mar 1726/1727 in St. Giles Cripplegate, London, England. Steventon was employed 10 as Grocer in London, England. He resided 11 in London, England. He signed a will 12 on 27 Sep 1723.

Walter Coutenay Pepys says that Steventon was born before 1677 but he may be referring to the will of Richard Pepys in 1677 in which only Mary is mentioned as child of William and Mary.

The IGI record is under Steuenton "Pypes" in 1694 which date would be (more) consistent with the marriage to Bethia. in 1717.

notes: The name Steventon is the family name by Marriage of Steventon's great aunt Margaret.
Also the will of Richard Pepys mentions his brother [in law] John Stevenson.

Steventon married 4 Bethia Lyford 1, 2, 3 daughter of Nathaniel Lyford and Bethia Green on 26 Jan 1717/1718 in St. Bartholomew the Great, London, England. They obtained a marriage license 5 on 13 Jan 1717/1718 in Vicar General. Bethia was born 6 in St. Andrew Holborn, London, England. She was buried 7 on 15 Oct 1769 in St. Andrew Holborn, London, England. Bethia was Admon. to son Steventon 8 on 3 Oct 1769.

Appears as "Lyfore" on Vicar General Marriage Licence Allegations. AP

This could be the Richard Pepys who appears in trade directories as a Brewer of Pye corner, Smithfield. trading as Pepys and Peach 1752-1755 and then just as Pepys until 1758 and then as Richard Pepys untill 1767 when he is shown at St. Sepulchres, bankrupt in January 1767.

Could be Mary Jane?

DOB stb 1757. However, A Vica General Marriage Licence Allegation appears for Franks, Pepys for 1753. This would suggest the age as given is wrong.

456. Richard Pepys 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 (George , Richard , Richard , John , John , William , William , Robert , Thomas ) was born in 1698 in Ashen, Essex, England. He was elected Master of Clothworkers (died in office) 11 in 1769.

WCP says that birth must have been in 1698 because previous Richard died in 1696. However, burial record for 1769 says age 77 (1692). Baptism not found in Ashen, Essex - other children found in London

WCP: died in office 1769 (i.e. as Master of Clothworkers.) He says that George's eldest son was Richard and has this Richard Pepys born 1698 as father of William Hasledine Pepys b. abt.1748. It would appear from the IGI records that his son George was the eldest*.

Richard married 2 (1) Elisabeth Waller 1 on 18 Apr 1721 in St. Benet Paul's Wharf, London, England. They obtained a marriage license on 18 Apr 1721 in Vicar General. Elisabeth was born estimated 1703. She was buried 3 on 16 Jun 1735 in St. Botolph, Aldersgate, London, England.

I thought that this Elizabeth would fit the marriage to Richard Pepys born 1698 but he is identified as the Richard who married Elizabeth Harper and father of William Hasledine Pepys.
Could this be Elizabeth Pepys who died in 1746. AP.

They had the following children:
