Robert
[de Eccleston] died between 1306 (De Banc. R. 161, m. 365 d.)
and Sept. 1315, when his widow Isabel gave to Roger de Prescot, clerk, and
his wife and children land near the house of Henry Halshagh and below
Lystanhurst Field; Add. MS. 32107, n. 371.
In
1339 Robert de Prescot
secured a sixth part of the 'manor' of Glest from Mariota, wife of William del Hull of Bickerstaffe; Final Conc. ii, 110…

History of the Prescott

The family
Prescott emerged as a notable family in the county of Devonshire where they
were recorded as a family of great antiquity seated as Lords of the Manor of
Pres[t]cot and estates in that shire.[i][i] They branched north to Shevington in
Lancashire and to
The author of The Families of Standish
and Prescott of Standish, Frederick Lewis Weiss does not seem to know of
this origin of the
Dr. Kuerden,
describing the road between Wigan and Preston, writing in 1695, declared:
"Having passed Standish you come to the Quaker's - - then crossing a
little arched bridge of stone you pass over Coppul More, and on the right-hand
leave Blainsco Hall belonging to the ancient family of the Worthingtons; a
little above which stands Coppul Chapell and near to it the ancient seat of the
Prestcots, now the estate and residence of Captain Ward" (Local Gleanings,
no. 378, p211).
The above histories
do not conflict because when the latter was written some 300 years had elapsed
since the Devonian line came to an end.
The manor and family did exist in
Ian Mortimer
has produced a splendid Guide to the Manors of Devon,
which provides a detailed listing of

Probably not manorial, although the detail in Lysons suggests it was an
early (?freehold) estate. It was the property of the
Prestcot family at an early period. In the reign of Henry IV [1367-1413] the
last male member of the family gave it to William Almescombe on condition of
him taking the name of Prestcot. Later it came to the family of Barnhouse, and
from them by successive marriages to the families of Southcote and Ridgway. Sir
George Cary of Cockington bought it from Lord Ridgway: it was subsequently sold
in parcels (Lysons, p151). White does not mention it in 1850."

is now considered unlikely that John Prescott was of the Shevington branch.
I have a history of the descendants of Richard de Prestcote. This is based upon
published genealogy, I am checking it with the parish
records as available.

- The following is a bare bones overview of the Prescots. Where
dates are ‘about’ or ‘estimated’ then of course exact dates have not been
found (as far as I am aware).
- Where the date is given as a year then the exact date of baptism,
marriage or burial (occasionally death) is known.
- Although the earliest family that seems to be reasonably well
documented is that of William of Coppul, it can not be assumed that all
the later families are descendants of this family. Although the numbers of
later families are not inconsistent with this possibility (or perhaps one
generation back), it is possible that we are simply seeing an artifact of
the lack of records.
- Names have been normalized to

Not all the
descendants of William of Coppul are documented. James of Standish is documented
in detail, but there are several families two generations on, that do not fit
with James: three families of Standish, and at least one of Ormskirk. Edward is
described as the eldest son of William and ‘left issue’. There are five
families of Standish in the second generation from William so it seems possible
that at least one other son of William had children besides James and Edward.

Baptism Records: begin in 1540 the years
are fairly complete until 1556. Indicating just one family of
Prescot having children Baptised.
Marriage records begin in 1538/39/40 with an
isolated document, then there is a gap 1540-48 before
the marriage records proper begins.
Burial Records for 1521-1539 are shown in {} these are taken from
the churchwarder accounts and appear to be very fragmentary. The burial
register poper starts in 1539.
There are
three male Prescot burials in 1570s, There are three
female Prescot marriages in Prescot and Huyton in the 1580s and 1590s, and
there are two Prescots, Robert and Henry, having children baptized in Prescot
in the 1590s and 1600s; so estimated births in the 1560s or early 1570s. Most
likely common ancestor based upon this generation of marriages and baptisms
would be in the 1530s or 1540s. Given the evidence of more than one family in
this time period a common ancestor would seem likely in the 1510s or 1520s.

Marriages in 1580s/90s, Baptisms for male Prescots begin in 1598 for Robert and
1602 for Henry. So could suggest that common ancestor of the following two
Ormskirk
The entries for Ormskirk begin in 1557. The entries are
missing parent’s names. But suggest Prescots born estimated 1533 and/or in the
1540s. The number of families in the 1530/40s period could suggest a common
ancestor Prescot born about 1508. This is contemporary with the children of
James Prescot in Standish. And so we can not be sure if these are distinct
line. There are other families of Standish in the next generation that could
certainly be his descendants. We know that Edward the eldest son of William of
Coppul ‘left issue’. A Thomas Prescott was married in Croston in 1540s who
could be Thomas son of William of Coppul.

others after 1580 when Wigan records began. Possibly a second
