Recovery of the bodies was made difficult by the force of the explosions, the late spring heat, and the amount of time elapsed between accident and recovery.

The strain of waiting for news is evident on the faces of family and friends.

Soldiers from Fort Bragg assisted in all phases of the recovery efforts,
from going down the shaft to feeding the crews.

All evidence of the company town where the miners and their families lived has disappeared.
