Source is fam bible of son William. The Will of John Murphy Sr.-Bedfore Co., VA--Will Book 5 pp 114-7 was signed 24 July 1819 and proved 25 Oct 1819. Orvill Paller says that he thinks John was born in county Cork, Ireland. John emigrated to Virginia where he acquired about 600acres of land and a large number of slaves. John is said to have freed 100 slaves(apparently for religious reasons) at the time of the War of 1812. He actually freed then 24 Dec 1792. Orvill Paller believes John came from Ireland to England and then to Virginia.

Captain in the Bedford Militia, VA. Qualified as an Ensign in the Revolutionary War, May 24, 1779, and as Captain of the Bedford County Militia, June 22, 1789. Also, furnished beef, dorn, and seven diets for the soldiers--Bedford Co., VA. DAR Patriot lookup reference code is RXPBJABK. Uriah's Will is dated 7 July 1830--proved 26 Feb 1838 Bedford Co., VA. Some say Uriah was born 1748.
