Lura Bell (Luke) Hibbs, her daughter, Ruth Jo (Hibbs) Reardon, wrote the following very interesting historical piece about the area where Lura’s family lived and grew up in Hansford County TX in the early 1900's. As noted in the article, this work was written to be published in the Hansford Historical Society's history books about Hansford County. Evidently Ruth did not get it submitted in time.

THAN ALLEN LUKE:Ethan Allen Luke
Ethan Allen Luke A stone mason and school teacher taught school and did masonry work in South Dakota. Moved family to Missouri and went to Colorado to work in mines for about 2 years around 1896 or 97 leaving his family in Missouri. Got contract to build railroads in OK. Built railroads to about 1907 when he bought a section of railroad land in Hansford County TX where he also built three damns on the Palo Duro Creek, and also did other masonry work, including most of the dams and chimneys in the county. Also ran a thrasher crew and did some farming. Moved family to Ochiltree TX in 1914 where he ran a thrasher and livery stable. Wife Julia Elizabeth died in Ochiltree in 1916. He then moved to Colorado in late 1916, went back to Ohio and married the window of his cousin. Ran a news stand and tobacco store. Went to Los Angeles California in 1927 Where he ran a tobacco store and new stand there until his death in 1929

Received email two weeks ago from XXXX she wrote me to give me the address of an Kenneth L Luke in Mobile AL that has been researching my LUKE family. Monday of this week I received a packet from him with two documents, one a short treaste on John Luke, and the other on the descendents of John Luke II.
I was very please to find myself and my family in his book, thanks to the diligent work of my Grandmothers sister Ruth Luke Reardon of Perryton TX, (and my hometown Spearman, TX) She passed away in 1995.
Other Note from Editor LD Pierce--in talking with my grandmother today April 15, 1999, I have finally noted that my grandmother is a double Luke. Her grandfather Ethan Luke married his 2nd cousin, Julia Elizabeth Luke. She was descended from Issac Luke and Rebecca Hewitt. Azel was descended from John Luke and Margaret Ference.

Just a note to enclose with the luke material. I got this material from kenneth Earl Luke, son of Clive John Luke. Clive John was 22 yrs younger than grandpa and kenneth is his youngest son, so he is 65 two years younger than me. and our mothers first cousin.
Shortly after Ethan's passing, his oldest daughter, Lura, wrote a newspaper in South Dakota, thought
to be in Avon, Bon Homme County, SD, where Ethan's first wife, Julia Elizabeth, had many relatives and friends.
The following appeared is what appeared in that newspaper.
ETHAN ALLEN LUKE PASSES TO REWARD
(Editors note: We are indebted to Wrs. Lura B. Luke of Waka, Texas for the
following obituary of Ethan Allen Luke. Mrs Hibbs was born in Bon Homme County in 1884, lived here until she was ten years old when she and her family moved to Missouri. ) . Ethan Allen Luke, father of the writer, was born in Ohio, July 2, 1860, and came to Bon Homme County in about the year 1879. He was united in marriage to Julia Elizabeth Luke, daughter of Isaac and Rebecca Luke of Avon, SD., on February 4, 1889. To this union were born eleven children as follows: Thomas Warren, Jonathan B., Lura Bell, Jesse Joseph, Mervin Isaac, Ethan Allen, Jr., Mattie Ann, Emmet Bryan, Sibyl Rebecca, and Hugh Jay. For the last three years the deceased residence was in Los Angeles, Ca., where he owned a store. He had been in poor health the past two years. When on his death bed he sent a message to his son, Emmet, on the 13th of June 1929. Emmet with his brother, Allen, went to him by aero plane from El Paso, Texas, and found that he could not live. He died July 3, 1929, at the age of 69 years. He requested before his death that his body be brought to Perryton, Texas, and he be laid to rest in the Ochiltree Cemetery by the side of his wife, Julia Elizabeth Luke, who had preceded him in death on April 4, 1916. All of his children attended hi funeral except Ruth, who died in infancy and Jesse J. Luke of Yale, Oklahoma. All except Jesse of the living children, were guests of the oldest daughter, Lura B. Hibbs, who lives 19 miles west of Perryton, Texas, before the funeral, and were a comfort to one another in this hour of bereavement. In 1917, Mr. Luke married Wary E. Luke of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, who now lives in Los Angeles, Ca. His last words to his wife were, "1 am better prepared today that I was yesterday." He was a member of the Methodist Church. He leaves 3 brothers, Warren, and Clive, who live in Ohio and Burdette of Redfield, SD. Many of the deceased first wife's relatives live in this community. That was Lura's kind and loving tribute to her father, writing to the newspaper in South Dakota where Ethan had not lived for more than 30 years but where many relatives still lived. The reference to his brother's, Warren and Clive, are incorrect, however. Warren had already died in 1926 in Chicago while Clive had married in 1920 and was living in Birmingham, Alabama where he died two years after Ethan on May 3, 1931. By the time of his birth. Ethan had left Edon, married, lived in South Dakota, and had a one-year-old son named Thomas Warren Luke. Great Grand son Kenneth E Luke of AL wrote: "In an old tin-type picture of Ethan, brother Burdette, and sister Caroline taken in their teens, Ethan looks somewhat impish and carefree, perhaps daring and adventuresome., This look was somewhat unusual back in those days when posing for pictures was relatively new and quite an experience. Most people looked quite solemn, maybe even scared, waiting for the lighting dust to explode, providing bright light for the photographer - like the flash bulb. But Ethan wore a little smile, like 'I dare you to scare me'."Kenneth Luke Also writes: "By today's standards and conditions, his life was amazing - raising 10 children without minimum wage, numerous regulations and all the things that govern our lives today. The times were hard and just surviving was sometimes harsh. Many failed while few succeeded - like Ethan. What also comes through rather vividly is love - love of children and grandchildren, love of work and challenges and a willingness to change and adapt to new places and conditions, to seek his own security for himself and his family. He was a successful man, no doubt about that. Look at the family he left behind. "

URA BELL LUKE:Lura's first marriage was short lived, ending in divorce. Reasons unkown. No Children. There is a wedding picture of Lura & Louis Eubanks that Lura mailed to her Grandmother Ann Fetterhoff Luke in Ohio. On the back she wrote, "Compliments of mrs Lura and Mr Louis Eubanks, Arkansas City, KS, and addressed to : "To Mrs Ann Luke"
Ruth Rearson wrote in 1980:
I did not know that my mother had been married before she married my father, but had not known the name of her first huband. I was about nine years old when an occasion arose that my parents felt it necessary to tell us that my mother had been married before. They gathered the three of us together and told us at the same time. It was seldom mentioned after that. At one time, I asked my mother what the name of her first husband was. She just gave me a short answer of "Eubanks" and did not mention any given name, so I guess It was an unplesant memory with her. I never did question her about it again. In the picture she looks like a little gir, doesn't she. She was twenty-four when she married my father. He had never married and was twenty-nine at that time."
Ruth Also writes: This is a copy of a sheet of information that I found among Mama's things that she left in an old truck, in her own writing and spelling. Since it was in her own writing I wanted to keep it.
" I Lura B Luke, left Colbert OK, Jan 14 1908. My brother, Tom Luke, met me at Shattuck OK, and we got to his home in Beaver County OK Jan 16 1908. She writes Lura B Hibbs Birth and residence Record:
Lura Bell Luke was born in Bonhom County S Dakota on Jan 13 1884. In October 1894, She with her parents and brothers and one sister moved to Platsburg, Missouri and in December 1900 they moved to Pawnee Co. OK. In Jan 1908 Lura Bell moved to Beaver Co OK where she was united in marriage to Samuel Robert Hibbs May 19th 1908. and in Feb 1913 her, & her husband, & one daughter Julia Rosa Moved to Hansford County Tx. To this union was born 2 sons and 2 daughters of which 1 son and 2 daughters are still living namely Juloia Rosa, Ruth Jo, and Lawrence Dell. In May 1941 her & her husband moved to Perryton TX. (signed) Lura B Hibbs Perryton, TX, December24 1967. on the edge of the paer was the following: Saved August 19th 1924 at home 17 miles west of Perryton, TX.

Perryton--Funeral Services for Mrs Lura B Hibbs, 83 are pending with Boxwell Brothers of Perryton Tx. Mrs Hibbs died Tuesday morning in Southwest Convalesent Home of Amarillo where she had been a patient since December 1963.
Mrs Hibbs was born in Yankton, S.D. She was a member of the Gospel Church of Perryton.
Surviving are the daughters, Mrs Julia McManus , and Mrs Ruth Reardon of Perryton; son L.D. of Dumas; two sisters, three brothers; 11 grandchildren, and 35 great-grand children
Obituary written by Ruth Reardon:
Lura Bell Luke, daughter of Ethan and Julia Luke, was born in Avon, Bonham County S. Dakota jan 13 1884. At an early age moved to Pawnee County Ok , where she grew to young woman-hood.
While visting her brother, near Beaver, Ok, in 1908, she met Samuel Robert hibbs, who lived on a home-stead near there. They were united in marriage in Beaver, Ok, may 19, 1908. to this union four children were born: Robert Darold, who died in infancy, Julia Rosa, Ruth Jo, Lawrence Dell.
In 1912 Mr and Mrs Rob Hibbs with their oldest daughter, moved to a ranch in the Palo Duro Creek district, west of the present town of Perryton, and there they resided for many years before moving into Perryton in 1941, Where they were living at the time of Rob Hibbs death, and which is still the home of Lura Hibbs.
In 1924 she professed her faith in Christ and accepted Him as her Savior, serving Him faithfully until the time of her death.
She leaves to mourn her passing two daughters, Mrs Homer McManus of Amarillo, and Mrs. Tim Readerdon of of Perryton and one son Lawrence D Hibbs of Dumas. Two sisters, Mrs Henry O Howe, of Salem Oregon, and Mrs O J Alberson of Salem, Illinois. Three brothers, Marvin Luke of Yale Ok, and Allen Luke of Brownwood Tx, and George Luke of Abilene tx. Eleven grand children and thirty four great grandchildren besides manhy other relatives and friends.
Among her survivors in Spearman is grand-daughter Mrs J L Pierce.
Funeral Services were conducted at 2 pm December 15 1967 in the Full Gospel Church at 4th and Eaton, In Perryton, with Rev Robert Giraouard of Spearman, officiating, assisted by Rev OA Busch, Pastor.

S. R. (Rob ) Hibbs came to Beaver County in 1886 at the age of 7 with his father and mother, Amos and Rosa Hibbs, and family.
The Hibbs family was living in Humbolt Ks in the late 1870's when Amos Hibbs acquired a contract with the government to freight Army supplies from the end of the railroad at Dodge City Ks by wagon to Tascosa, Tx, and Ft. Henderson,Tx (Old Miami), for four trips a year. He had four wagons and eight yoke of oxen. Humbolt was a long way from Dodge City. He could only get home three or four times a year, and then only for a few days at a time. It would take him over two month round trip, then he would ride the train to LA Harp, then ride a horse ten miles home, stay a few days, then catch the train from La Harp back to Dodge City.
The freight crossing on the Beaver River was where Beaver City is now, about
half way on his route. there was good grass and plenty of water there, so he would spend two or three days there repairing wagons and letting the oxen feed up and rest. He decided to move his family there so he could spend more time with them.
He found a beautiful spot about seven miles southeast from what is now the town of Beaver. He obtained permissioin from the Army to build a home there. Amos cut down some cottonwood trees and cleared a plot of land. He cut poles and logs for construction and started a sod house. In 1883 he brought some of the olkder children with him to spend the summer working on the home. Four year old Rob came with them and made a full trip with his father. They picked and stacked buffalo bones; they loaded the bones on the wagons on the way back. Amos sold the bones at Dodge City, Kansas.They finish the sod house in 1886. Four Hibbs brothers, Wesley, Peter, Asa, and Amos with their families, moved by covered wagon to Beaver County in the spring of 1886,
The sod house had five rooms, a bedroom and living room across the front, a long room for a kitche and dining room in the center, two bedrooms across the bck. The two back bedrooms had no floors but th rest of the house was floored with cottonwood longs and sand filling between them. The logs were laid on the ground. They said it was more lik a washboard than a floor.
Rob Hibbs first school was in an abandoned sod house. He had to walk two miles. The teacher was miss Mamie Ashcraft.
When he was nine years old, he went with his brother Clarence to work as a choreboy for John George on his ranch on the Beaver River. He continued to work on ranches as a choreboy, bronco buster and cowboy until he was 16 yrs old. Rob was very good at taming horses for work on the raches,and he made good money and came home with enought for his own needs and gave his mother enought to keep the familoy through the winter. He was 16 years olkd and wanted to go to school. He taught himself as much as possible and was able to enter Beaver School for two years; he rode his horse seven miles and graduated from the Beaver Elementary School; that was all they had in Beaver at that time. After school he went back to work on the ranches. In 1898 he joined Roosevelts Rough Riders; he took some training at Ft Leavenworth, Kansas, then went to Louisana, but the war was over too soon for him to get to Cuba. He came home and went to work for the Ewing Ranc near Higgins, Tx, where he met Will Rogers who was also working there. Bill Cody came through the country with his Wild West Show. Rob had a trained bucking horse; one of the tricks was to roll a cigarette while the horse bucked very high, Will Rogers whirled his rope and Rob rode his horse through the loop. They attended the show and put on their show and Cody Hired them. Rob worked with the Wild West Show several seasons. He went to New York's Madison Square Garden one season.
Rob Hibbs filed on a claim 19 miles southeast of Beaver. I don't know what they year was. He was working to help his family; his brothers helped him prove up on his land. He built a one-room dugout, fenced some alnd for field, and hired a neighbor to break 40 acresw. There was a large spring and good water on his land that is where the sheep war took place. the sheep men were watering their sheet there and tramping out the spring. Rob was shot through the stomach and carried the bullet in his back near his spine the rest of his life.
Rob bought out some other claims adjoining his land so he had one and one-half sections. He gave land in one corner for a school. The first school was built from sod; Rob's sister Mrs. Jessie Drum (Jessie Hibbs Drum) was the first teacher. there were 50 pupils the first year. The people of the community raised money for lumber for a better building later.
In 1907 Lura Luke came to Beaver County. Her brother had a claim near Rob Hibbs. Lura Luke was born in Tendal S Dakota, in 1884. She came to Oklahoma in 1896 with her father, Eathan Allen Luke, who was a stone mason and civil engineer. he got a railroad construction contract in Oklahoma. He built railroads in Oklahoma for ten years, then built brick buildings and dams. Lura cooked for his construction crews until she came to Beaver County. Lura's Brother Thomas Luke hauled water from Rob Hibbs' spring. Lura Luke and Rob Hibbs met at the spring; he started courting her and they married on May 19, 1908.
The first two children, Robert Darel and Julia Rosa, were brn in a one-room Dugout. In 1911 Rob built a two-room frame house. Rob needed more land for pasture for his cattle and he sold out in 1913 and bought four sections in Hansford and Ochiltree County.

ENRY ORY HOWE:Henry Ory Howe was born to Rev Edgar and nancy Kilmer Howe near kilmer in Lincoln County, Nebraska, Dec 22 1887. At an early age the family traved with a covered wagon caravan by the way of kansas and missouri to Cherokee territory in western Oklahoma, where they settled on a homestead in Woods County sixteen miles west of Alva Okla. Here he grew to manhood.
he was a life long farmer, a lay minister, and church deacon, who helped in the founding of several churches. He was a poet, a bible teacher of many years, and a member of the Keizer Church of the Nazarene.
As a young many Henry homsteaded land in the Oklahoma Panhandle near Guymon. In the wheat harvest he went across the state line into to Ochiltree County Texas and took a job for a local rancher who ran a threshing crew. the bosses daugher went with the cookshack, doing the cooking for the crew. Partyly because of her he went back the next year.They were married Jan 12 1913. just one year short of sixty nine years of marriage on december 10 1980 Mattie Ann Luke Howe left to be with the lord she loved.
Mr howe was always a good neighbor, a good husband and fatgher, who by an exemplary life clearly pointed the way to god. His last concern in life was that each of his children get their lives straightened out and rady to meet god.
Henry howe departed this life Nov 3 1982 leaving behind six daughers and eight sons;
daughers: Hazel Bewley and Ethel Joyner of Salem, Oregon; Pauline Britton of Grover City CA, Vononna Tracey of Fairbanks, Alaska; ruth joiner of Eugene, Oregon; and Kathleen Laws of Sherwood, Oregon. sons; Jesse A, Rex K, Floyd M, and Henry O jr , all of Salem Oregon, Thaddeus D., Grants Pass Ore.,; Ernie and Stanley of Brooks, Oregon. Fifty nine grandchildren, eight-five great grandchildren and fifteen great great grandchildren

TRhe daugher of Henry and Mattie Howe, she was bron Aug 8 1920 in Alva Oklahoma.
She came to oregan in 1943 and worked in eugene as aTelephone operator.
She was married to Clarence h Tracy Aug 4 1950. They owned and operated Eugene Garage until it made way for street expansion in 1954. A year later they moved to Alaska where there owned another garage in Fairbanks. For the past several years they have owned a gravel busines and a land development company in Fairbanks. Having no children of their own they opened their door to neices, nephews, and neighboring children, whose visits often extended into weeks and months.
Survivors include her husband Clarence; brothers, Jesse Bob Bloyd and Hankd of Salem. Ernie and Stanley of Brooks, T.D of Grants Pass, and Garold of Elk River, Idaho; Sisters Hazel Bewley, Ethel joyner and Pauline Britton of Salem, Ruth Joiner of Eugene, and kathleen Laws of Sherwood. Interment was at rest lawn cemetary, Salem oregon
