(John J. Eakins was born in Henderson Co., KY. He came to Dallas in 1849 after serving as a Capt in the Mexican War, 1847-1848. He was married to Ophelia Crutchfield on 10/30/1850. He donated the land for the City Park (better known today as Old City Park or Dallas Heritage Village) for which the city cancelled $300 in taxes. He also gave more than an acre of land for school purposes.)
