4Peter Gorton,Sarah Grigg Tomkinson, Extracts from Sarah Grigg's Bible., Bible in possession of Robert Tomkinson,London, UK, 1 Feb 2008.
"Extracts from the Bible bought by Peter Gorton in 1745
later inherited by Sarah Tomkinson (nee Grigg)

This Bible has been rebound by E Worrell Bookbinder of Birmingham (probably for Michael Tomkinson of Franche Hall whose bookplate is in the front).
Its condition at the time of rebinding was probably very poor, the frontice pages are missing, and the outside edges of many pages have been overly cropped.

12 additional leaves have been bound into the front of the Bible. The first five pages had obviously been in a very poor state, and were gummed onto fresh leaves [inserted when rebound]. The remainder of the hand-written pages were written on directly. A single hand written leaf was bound in at the back, and a loose page was found near the front.

Sarah Frances Tomkinson (nee Grigg) [1813-1890] was Michael’s mother. Her mother was Hannah Gorton [1777-1855].
