THE PLETSCHETTE FAMILY OF NEUNHAUSEN first version: June 24, 2000
==================================== last updated: Aug. 21, 2000
major modifications made by Mr. Ed Kohl! !!!!!!!!!!
Ed added to a lot of dates (!!) indicating that this date is certified !
________________________________________________________________________
1. Pletschette John. *1644 - +1712
oo Meyers Catherine *?? - +1725
? Q: a) John Pletschette *1644 and Jean Pierre Pletschette *1758
? cannot possibly be 6 generations apart. The time difference
? is 114 years, which would result in the sucessive fathers
? being 19y old in average. -- Jean F. Languy
2. Pletschette Paul *?? - +1734
oo Mertz Marg. *?? - +1740
3. Pletschette Jak. *?? - +1750
oo Mack Marg. *?? - +1761
4. Pletschette Joh. *?? - +1755
oo Rausch Maria *?? - +1732
5. Pletschette Joh. *?? - +1769
oo Wilwerding Mari *?? - +1770
6. Pletschet Johannes *?? - +1783
oo Adamy Anna *?? - +1770
They lived in Neunhausen, in Wiltz Canton, in the
Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. We believe Johannes was appointed
"Burgermeister" (mayor) of Neunhausen in 1778. This was during
the time Luxembourg was governed by Austria. It is said he
owned the village, and all the people living in Neunhausen worked
for Johannes. In turn he governed the people. (Please note, on
the Family Tree or "Stammbaum" as given to me by Margot Kohl, his
name was spelled with only one "t" at the end, as were all his
decendents. However, on the Pletschette Family Gravestone, his
name is engraved as "Jak. Pletschette". It is unknown how many
children they had. However, as was the custom of his time, he
passed on his title and property to his oldest son:
7. Pletschet J. Pierre *1758
+24AUG 1818 (!!)
? oo Asselborn Maria *?? - +1813
Jean-Pierre was mayor of Neunhausen and signed
with "J.P. Plaetschet, maeyer".
It is unknown exactly how many children they had besides
Bernard, Anna-Catharina known as Anne Marie & Thrse
Pletscher, and possibly Maria-Catharina, but again the title
and property were passed on to their oldest son Bernard.
d 8. Pletschet Anna-Catharina *06 FEB1801 (!!)- +(?)
d (17 pluviose an 9)
d Q: b) Pletschet Anna-Catharina is said to be born
d 5 FEB 1792 (17 pluvise an 9).
d One of the two dates is incorrect, as
d 17 pluvise an 9 was 6 FEB 1801 -- Jean F. Languy
d A: Right ! 17 pluviose an 9 was 6 FEB 1801 -- Ed Kohl
d A: b) The grave stone says she died on March 17, 1855
d at the age of 54 years. I would say
d February 6, 1801 is the logical date -- Steve Palen
d
d Conclusion: the record seems to be correct as follows:
d I will delete the record before in a few weeks! OK?
d -- FP Aug 15, 2000
8. Pletschet Anna-Catharina * 06 feb 1801 (17 pluviose an 9) (!!)
+ 17 mar 1855 at the age of 54
8. Pletschet Maria-Catharina *? DEC1796
+ 10JUN1802 (21 prairial an 10) (!!)
? Q: c) Same for Maria-Catharina said to be born
? 11 JUN 1793 (21 prairial 10).
? 21 prairial 10 was 10 JUN 1802 -- Jean F. Languy
A: That was an error:
the certificate dated (21 prairial an 10) is not
a birth certificate, but a death certificate.
So, Maria Catharina died 10JUN1802,
five years and seven months old, as specified
in the certificate.
Considering this, we can say that she was probably
born in december 1796. -- Ed Kohl
8. Pletscher Theresa * 24jan1794, Neunhausen
+ aft 26mar1828, Nives - Belgique
oo Lambin Jean Hubert * 18nov1792, Nives + unknown
oo 18may1813, Nives - Belgique
Note: for more info on this family see the Pletscher Theresa
8. Pletschet Bernard *2AUG1803 (14 thermidor an 11) (!!)- +??
? Q: d) Same for Bernard said to be born
? 1 AUG 1794 (14 thermidor 11).
? 14 thermidor 11 was 2 AUG 1803.
? This is major problem, since he could not have
? children by 1814!! -- Jean F. Languy
A: Right ! Bernard, born (14 thermidor an 11) is not identical
with Bernard, married to Catharina Kellen (or Koellen)
and bornprobably 1785 or 1786. In the birth certificate
of his sonJean-Pierre (1814) it is specified that he is
28 years oldand in his own death certificate (1853)
his age is 69 years.
In the same document it is certified that he was the son of
Peter (Jean-Pierre) Pletschette and Marie Asselborn -- Ed Kohl
8. Pletschet Bernard *1786(??) - + 08FEB1853 (!!)
oo Kellen Catharina (or Catherine Koellen) *?? - +1861
Bernard was also mayor of Neunhausen and signed
with Bernard Pletschet, bourgmestre.
(Notes indicate he may have inherited his title and property
? in 1823?) As far as we know, all of the following nine
children were born in Neunhausen:
9. Pletschet Jean-Pierre *22JUN1814 (!!) - +29AUG1887 (!!)
oo Loring Anne-Catherine * 6DEC1824 - +1893 (daughter of
Nicolas & Catherine Loring of Arsdorf) Jean-Pierre was the
oldest of Bernard & Catharina's, and thus inherited the
title and property of Neunhausen.
It is said he only registered the new born boys,
the girls were registered by relatives.
10. Pletschet Bernard Dieudonne Alexandre *4FEB1844 (!!)
+8MAY1921 (!!)
Bernard did not marry and had no children to
pass the title and property on to.
When he died, the land was sold.
It is said the relatives who emigrated to
America divided the money, while those who still
lived in Luxembourg divided the possessions.
10. Pletschet Sophie *29SEP1849 (!!) - +15JUN1913
Her name is engraved on the Pletschette Family
Gravestone.
10. Pletschet Auguste *16MAY1857 (!!) - +??
He became a Roman Catholic Priest, and later
Director of the Agriculture School in Ettelbruck.
10. Pletschet Anna-Maria-Mathilde *2MAY1859 (!!)
+27NOV1912 (!!)
Her name is engraved on the Pletschette Family
Gravestone as Mathil. Pletschette.
10. Pletschet Sophie-Emilie *12JAN1861 (!!) - +??
10. Pletschet Francois-Denis *16FEB1864 (!!)
+24DEC1936 (!!)
oo Matelet Marie-Hubertin-Mathilde
He was a Professor and later Director of the
Lycee Classique in Diekirch.
9. Pletschet Pierre *4SEP1816 (!!) - +??
oo Fourman Anne Marie of Eschweiler *?? - +??
They lived in Eschweiler.
Pierre was mayor in Eschweiler in 1849 for the
first time and reelected in 1861
The following is an email sent by Ren Daubenfeld of LUX
on 7/23/2000: Pierre Pletschette (1816) in Neunhausen, son
of Bernard and Catherine Kellen, b. Nov 21,1814 in
Erpeldingen married on Feb 21, 1836 in Eschweiler.
I've found the following children, Anna Margaretha (1839),
Marie Catherine (1840), Jean Pierre (1843),
Jean Pierre (1844), Wilhelm (1846), Pierre (1848),
Anna Catharina (1850).So I don't know who were the
parents of the Jean born 1836.
(Note: Pierre and Anne Marie did NOT emigrate to the USA
in 1845 with three of their children on board the
Silvanus Jenkins as previously thought!)
In Nicholas Gonner's book, Luxembourgers in the New World,
Pierre Pletschette (note new spelling) left Grosbous,
Luxembourg With a family of four (presumably a wife and
three children). He is listed in this book as a 40 yr. old
farmer, who departed Antwerp on board the "Silvanus
Jenkins". They arrived in New York on July 3, 1845.
Reference: VII/3+4 (volume and issue) of Monthly
newsletter of the Luxembourg Society of Wisconsin, 303 North
Garfield Ave., Port Washington, Wisconsin 53074, which
includes an abstract of the ship's manifest. Pierre and his
family were among the first settlers of Chicago, Cook
County. This area was (and maybe still is) known as the
"Ridge". Nicholas Faber from Bauschleiden (Wiltz), and
Wilhelm Sinner, Johann Beck, and Pierre Pletschette from
Grosbous, all arrived on the same ship and settled in the
same area. They encountered a wilderness with some woods,
bad meadows, pastures and moors. They bought land for $3-4
an acre, and thought they had not struck a good bargain.
Forty four years later, in 1889, the land was worth between
$500-1500 an acre. These men were farmers and truck-
gardeners, specializing in vegetable production. This
district, on the western shore of Lake Michigan, between
Chicago and Kenosha, Wisconsin, is very low-lying and flat,
and stands only a few meters higher than the level of the
lake. In former times, where this was not a wasteland
of sand and gravel, it was at best a prairie with only a
middling stand of oaks and meager grass cover which in
places was interrupted by marshy meadows studded with
willows and pools of standing water. The breaking waves of
the lake on the shore had resulted in a deposit of sand,
gravel and rubble over a short distance with the result that
a ridge was formed, at some points closer to the water than
at others, over a range from 12-15 miles, north of Chicago.
According to Gonner's book of 1889, "If this area more
nearly resembles a big garden than a desert, the change is
attributable to Luxembourgers. With superhuman effort, they
transformed the sandy plain into vegetable gardens and the
moors into fertile fields. Each time the truck gardeners
sold their vegetables on South Water Street or at the
produce dealers, they ungrudgingly drove home Chicago dung
for the enrichment of their plots. Luxembourger residents
on the "Ridge" demonstrated what industriousness and tough-
minded diligence is capable of producing in the long run."
10. Pletschet Anna Margaretha *1839
? Q: e) Pletschet Anna Margaretha *1839 cannot have
? children by 1840. So Marie Catherine *1840 must
? be a sister to Anna Margaretha (thus belong
? to the 10th generation), as rightly stated
? lower in the tree. -- Jean F. Languy
11. Pletschet Marie Catherine *29SEP1840 - +10SEP1900
oo Ignace Meyers *10DEC1838 - +??
11. Petrus Meyers *13NOV1866 - +??
10. Pletschet Jean Pierre *1843
10. Pletschet Jean Pierre *1844
10. Pletschet Wilhelm *1846
10. Pletschet Pierre *1848
10. Pletschet Anna Catharina *1850
10. Pletschette Marie-Catherine *29SEPT1840- +10SEPT1900 ??
oo Meyers Ignace *10DEC1838- +??
11. Meyers Petrus *13NOV1866- +??
Remark: Pierre Pletschette of Eschweiler
and Pierre Pletschet, mentioned in Nicholas Gonners book
can't be identical :
"He is listed in this book as a 40 yr. old farmer" -
"They arrived in New York on July 3, 1845".
Born in 1816, Pierre had only 29 years
in 1845 and not 40. As he was elected mayor of
Eschweiler in 1849 and 1861, he couldn't arrive in
New York in 1845.
9. Pletschet Barbara *01MAY1818 (!!) - +29MAR1822 (!!)
9. Pletschet Wilhelmus *26AUG1820 (!!) - +??
9. Pletschet Anna Maria *8MAR1823 (!!) - +21MAR1865 (!!)
9. Pletschet Maria *30AUG1825 (!!) - +21MAR1865 (in Kaundorf)
She lived with her younger brother Jean Bernard in Kaundorf.
9. Pletschet Nicolas *13OCT1827 (!!) - *??
--- Great-Grandfather of Carol Arnold-Pletschett
oo Wilmes Margaretha *1834 - +?? of Boeven (Bavigne)
It is said, that because Nicolas was not the oldest son, and
did not inherit the title and the property, he was given ONE
COW. It is a standing joke in the family, to hold up your
thumb and say, "What can you do with ONE cow?" So Nicolas
and Margaretha took their one cow to Boeven and together they
had 12 children:
10. Pletschette Catherine (Katharina) *8NOV1853 (!!) - +??
oo Majerus Nicolas *?? - +??
Together they lived in Rambrouch, Luxembourg.
Catherine & Nicolas were grand-parents to Nicolas
Collingnon.
10. Pletschette Sophie *18SEPT1855 (!!) - +07MAR1866 (!!)
? Remark: Sophie, born 18SEPT1855, died 07MAR1866,
? only ten years old.
? (death-certificate from the local authority of Mecher)
? Sophie who married Agnes John and emigrated to the
? States isn't mentioned in the official documents.
? oo Agnes John
? They were married in Luxembourg and moved to
? Trail, Minnesota.
The following email was sent to me 7/23/2000
by Rene Daubenfeld of LUX: I think that your ancestors,
Carol, came from Bavigne, children of Nicolas Pletschette
and Anna Margaretha Wilmes. According to the records
the child that you call Sophie (1855), is called
Josephine and died March 7, 1866. So I believe that
she was not married to John Anges, it was probably her
sister Katharina Sophie (1868) who was his wife.
