Additional Information:
Richard Hankins was probably born in Scotland aft 1727. His origins are unknown. He is first found in the records of Hunterdon County, New Jersey in 1778 when he appears on a tax list at Hopewell. He is also listed there in 1779, 1780, 1781 and 1785. In 1783 he conducted an inventory of the estate of Benjamin Reeder of Hopewell. In1789, he was elected Overseer of the Roads at Hopewell, and a Commissioner of Appeal in 1795 and 1796. Although family tradition holds that Richard served in the American Revolution, no proof of that service has been found. Richard died before March 7, 1798 when his estate was probated. He died intestate.
