Frequently Asked Questions
Here are a few frequently asked questions:
- How far back has the Maughan line been traced?
All of the family records go back to Thomas in 1695 and hit a brick
wall.
- How many Maughan Family History books have been written?
There are five known Maughan history books that have been published:
The first two books were done by the Peter Maughan Family Organization. The
first book was done in 1971 and was titled Peter Maughan Family History.
It is no longer in print and no longer available unless the Peter Maughan Family
Organization decides to do a reprint. Their second book was done in 1986 and was
titled William Harrison Maughan Family History.
The third and fourth books were done by
Arlene Maughan Henley and Della Redford Maughan Britenbeker. The first was completed in 1997. It is about Arlene's
great-grandfather Daniel Hill Maughan (grandson of Peter Maughan). The second was completed in 2004 and is titled
"The Legacy of Peter Maughan". It is no longer in print.
There is a fifth book on Hyrum Woodward Maughan, a son of William
Harrison Maughan. It was written by Martha Harding, a descendant of Hyrum. It was done in 1999.
- Where does the name Maughan come from?
The name is Maughan is probably of Scottish descent. The name may have
evolved from Machan or a couple of other versions
- Was the name Maughan changed from something else?
As far as the Maughan name goes, it has been traced back to 1695 in
Cumberland, England and there is substantiated proof of that. It is still
believed that the Maughan name has remained true since then. Some believe
that the name may have been Machan in Scotland. If that is the case then a
Maughan in Australia or New Zealand has traced the line back to the 1200's,
but there is still no proof yet.
- Where do the Maughans hang out on the internet?
There are a number of Maughan message boards and forums on the
internet (see the links page), but most Maughans
hang out on the
Maughan e-group
website.
