From Guardian 21 Feb 2010:
Our father, Peter Spiro, who has died aged 79, was a child Holocaust survivor.
Born in Vienna, he came to Britain alone as an eight-year-old, on the
kindertransport trains from Nazi-occupied Austria. Peter was later reunited
with his father, a journalist, writer and radical, and then with his beloved
mother. Peter was always grateful and loyal to the Britain that welcomed him
and his family.
The family settled first in Leeds, giving Peter his lifelong affection for
Leeds United football club. He won a scholarship to the Quaker school, Leighton
Park, in Berkshire, and sometimes told stories about tennis matches against the
local girls' school, in Caversham.
At 18, Peter joined the Institute of Bankers, where he spent all his working
life. He was at his happiest working as mentor to young bankers taking
professional exams. In 1949, he signed up as a soldier; when he left, in 1952,
it was as a warrant officer in the Education Corps, an achievement he was proud
of despite his pacifist leanings. Peter then graduated in politics, philosophy
and economics as an evening student at the London School of Economics.
In 1954, Peter married Marion, his army sweetheart and, in 1962, they moved
from Raynes Park, south-west London, to Reigate, Surrey. A champion of
comprehensive education, Peter was the chair of governors of local Reigate
schools and of the further education college. For more than 30 years, he
enjoyed his membership of Surrey county cricket club and summer afternoons at
the Oval, though he also loved rugby.
Peter and Marion moved to Walthamstow, north-east London, in 2004, to be near
family. Peter became a campaigner for the community's cultural and political
life. A founder member of the Friends of Lloyd Park, he worked with others to
win Lottery investment. He protested against funding cuts to the borough's
William Morris Gallery, and until recently was vice-chairman and acting
chairman of the William Morris Friends' committee. Of the "old Labour" school,
he had expressed doubts about how to vote at the next election.
Our lovely, gentle and passionate Dad has left an enduring and unique
impression on many people. Peter is survived by Marion, his daughters, Nikki
and Katie, his sons-in-law David and Terry and his much-loved grandchildren,
Harry, Bethan, Elizabeth and Hebe.

MI translation"Here lies the important woman Mrs. Telza wife of our teacher
HaRav Rabbi Menachem Kornfeld May the memory of the righteous be of a blessing
died on Wednesday 7 Tamuz [29 June 1887] and was buried on Friday on the eve of
the Holy Sabbath 9 Tamuz 5647 by the abbreviated era.
[The following is an acrostic poem spelling the name Telza Kornfeld] A charming
woman of good deeds, praised by all, the crown of our heads, the apple of our
eyes, our beloved mother, he took you away from us to our sorrow and grief, God
is righteous, he is the one who will heal our wounds and our disaster.
Close and far and all who know you are mourning you, you were a merciful mother
to the poor and to all who ask, you opened your good heart to the needy, your
wisdom helped you to succeed in your life.
You will be the light of the one residing in the heavens and you are going to
collect the fruit of your righteousness, your payment will be large in the
heavens, and he will seek and examine your heart and will pay back for your
deeds. May her soul be bound in the bond of everlasting life."
FRom Elisabeth Kornfeldt (10 May 2011):"THERESIA Kornfeld, wife of Emanuel: she
was the daughter of Samuel and Anna Beran, born in Luze 19 Mar 1811, died in
Mlada Boleslav 29 Jun 1887. She and Emanuel had one son and two daughters. (as
you see her maiden name - Theresia Beran - is almost identical to her
mother-in-law's, Theresa Beran). "

"[Here lies] a magnificent man, our teacher and rabbi Jeremias/ Jeremiah Beram
from the village of Presherbarsh, died on 22 Elul 563? , May his soul rest in
the heavens.
[The following is an acrostic poem spelling the name Jeremiah]
Streams of water, streams of water, from the heavens above and the earth below,
will pour from our eyes without respite, no one knows the magnitude of our
crisis, how wonderful you were my beloved husband, our father was the most
respected man, you're loved by everyone who knows you, they will cherish you
for eternity, those who know you will praise you, you supported and helped the
poor of the land.
[The following is an acrostic poem spelling the name Beram]
You always desired God's Torah, it was your breath of life and your pleasure,
your humble spirit was pleasant and illuminated your righteousness, your soul
suffered a lot of pain and sorrow, you supported piety, our pain is great and
there is no hope for consolation, God will protect you, you will reside und the
