San Francisco Chronicle:
OFFEN, Elly L. -- 97, a long-time San Francisco resident, died of multiple
age-related complications on November 22, 2000. She was born in Vienna,
Austria, on June 15, 1903, the daughter of Julius and Marianne Spiro. She lived
there until her marriage to Ernest Offenheimer in Frankfurt, Germany, in June
1929. She obtained all her schooling in Vienna, including a PhD in Economics,
and remained in touch with the liberal economics professors at the University
of Vienna (Ludwig von Mises, Fritz Machlup, Friedrich von Hayek) for many years
thereafter. Following receipt of her doctorate, she reviewed books for the
Nationaloekonomische Zeitung and served on the Board of Directors of the Spiro
family papermaking business, located in Cesky Krumlov, Czechoslovakia. Escaping
Germany in November 1938, she and her husband fled first to England, where
their son and only child, George, was born, and then to the United States,
settling in San Francisco in December 1941. She has lived in San Francisco
since then, the last 52 years in the same home. The family name was shortened
to Offen when they became U.S. citizens in 1947-8. She was an extremely
dedicated wife, mother, mother-in-law, and, later, grandmother to her two
granddaughters. In San Francisco, she gave private exercise classes for women
from 1942 until 1992, when, at the age of 89, she broke her hip. In addition to
partaking actively of San Francisco's diverse cultural offerings, she focused
much of her unbounded energy on providing forums for thoughtful people from
many diverse backgrounds and interests to meet, exchange ideas, network, and
enjoy themselves in an elegant environment with bountiful sustenance. Survivors
include her son, daughter-in-law, two granddaughters, Catherine and Stephanie,
and great-granddaughter, Emma Elly. Interment will be private. In lieu of
flowers, contributions in memory of Elly L. Offen may be made to public
television or a charity of your choice.

Phrix-Werke AG.

The hand-written word at the top of the sheet and under the crossed-out word
"Bewohner" is "Elternlos" -- without parents. Conscripts without parents were
registered in separate lists. ( See "Alphabetische sammlung aller politischen
Volume 1, page 703. )

The first entry is for a female, see column "das weibliche Geschlecht
berhaupt". Her name is "Sara Abraham Jerusalem". Under "Anmerkung" is the word
"gestorben" -- deceased. The entry under "Qualifikazion" is "Wittwe" -- widow.
I think Abraham is either her father's of her husband's name.

The second entry is for her son Simon. Under "Qualifikazion" there is a word I
cannot read (looks like "Blenier"), and "blaue Augen" -- blue eyes. There is a
tick at the colum "Ganz unanwendbare", meaning that Simon does not qualify for
and other classification of male persons. The comment reads (I think) "seit

To Dana Cameron. Dear Dana, Yes there is a Joseph Beran on my fragmented
familytree, born in Czech Rep. He had many siblings some names: Adolf,Karel,
Joseph etc. their parents lived in Libcan I dont know his first name but he
married a Mautner from Smirnice and appear to have had 16 ! children. I appear
to stem from Adolf Beran married to Therese Lieberman but this is not set in
stone as there seems to be a bit of confusion about christian names of fathers
and sons. My uncle Henry in Sydney would also like very much to find out more.
You see my grandparents Gustav Beran and his 2nd Wife Erna (1st wife war Maria)
were sent to a concentration camp in Lithuania from Vienne and never heard of
again and so we don't have any documents of relations. There is also a number
of cousins in New Zealand which we made contact with fairly recently. My father
was Oscar Beran and his 2 brothers were Egon and Henry (Heinz) all born in
Vienna. The Gradparents both stem from Czechoslovakia but appear to have
transferred as yougsters to Vienna. I do have a fairly detailed tree but not
many dates. My grandfather Gustav also was one of 13 children. Some of the
names: Bertha, Kamilla, Anna, Regina,Paula, Karel, GUSTAV, Hermina,
Rudolf,Albert, Otto? and one girl died in infancy, no name available. My new
email address is [email protected]. Previously it was different.
Hope to hear from you sometimee. Regards Monica, Canberra, Australia

FORT WARREN, MASS., January 27, 1862.
A. T. C. PEARSON, Esq., Washington, D. C.

MY DEAR SIR: I last had the pleasure of seeing you at Washington in December,
1860. I little thought then that the next December I would be a prisoner at
this place. I write this at a venture that you {p.490} are as above addressed,
and therefore concluded to drop you a few lines. I took the liberty of
addressing a letter to Mr. Rice some days ago, and should this reach you I hope
you will do me the favor to do all you can and with all whom you can for the
purpose of obtaining for me an investigation, a trial or a release with a
permit to return home. It would be a rather singular trial though without the
first particle of a violation of law to base a charge upon.
But to the point. In December, 1860, my daughter who was at a school in
Pennsylvania near Norristown lost her eye-sight. Hearing of it I immediately
proceeded there and placed her under proper medical treatment. On my return
home then I met you in W. Owing to the interruption of the mails last spring or
summer I at one time received no intelligence from my daughter for about three
months, when becoming uneasy I went to Louisville, telegraphed to two parties
in New York and received a reply from one that Emma had left the place I [had]
left her owing to some misunderstanding and for me to come on at once. I was
also informed by several acquaintances that there was not the least difficulty
or danger of arrest for me in visiting the North, &c. So I did at once proceed,
leaving Louisville Sunday, 11th of August, arriving in New York on the 13th. I
found my daughter much improved and with a kind family. I made my arrangements
to place her at a school near New York (where she now is) and should have left
Friday but was persuaded to remain over Sunday by friends. On Saturday morning
I was arrested by the police and Sunday morning I was by telegraph order of Mr.
Seward conveyed to Fort Lafayette-and here I am now.
I know not the charges against me except the nonsensical newspaper reports that
I was or had said I was an officer in the Confederate Army, &c., all of which I
need not tell you has not the least foundation in truth. I held no office of
any hind in the Confederate States nor took any part in the present unfortunate
difficulties and strife. My arrest was I feel confident the result of malice of
an individual whom you perhaps know, and having no friends at court to exercise
the influence which effected the release of others from the South I was
overlooked and my case forgotten or at least uncared for. 'Tis true my
brother-in-law of Cayuga County, N. Y., and another gentleman there well
acquainted with and a political friend of Mr. Seward, addressed him in my
behalf some two months ago, and besides the Hon. Mr. Ludlow, of New York, who
visited Fort Lafayette several times, promised to obtain my release (upon
parole not to return South without a permit, &c.) as soon as he visited
Washington as he confessed there was no case against me (all for a
consideration). But Mr. Seward soon after disowning Mr. L. I am minus my
release as well as consideration.
I need not say what my ideas are that all those who actually bore arms against
the United States, &c., are released and civilians from the Confederate States,
bearers of dispatches, &c., are also released through the exertions of friends
or counsel, yet I who committed no wrong, violated no law, have been imprisoned
now nearly six months and still there seems to be no remedy.
I will not dilate or extend my remarks or ideas of such a policy. Presuming
upon an introduction by you to Mr. Rice I took the liberty of requesting his
services in my behalf. As yet I have received no reply. I requested him to
obtain my release, and if it cannot be granted unconditionally to obtain it on
my parole for forty-five or fifty days for the purpose of visiting the
Confederate States and endeavor to obtain an exchange for some one held there
as a prisoner and if unsuccessful to return, &c. I have not heard from home
