Earnestina Loewenheim, age 54 of 411 Fourth Ave, cut her throat. Came to the US
with daughter in 1866, after the death of her husband who had died in an insane
asylum in Germany. The same incurable & raving type of insanity had taken from
her 2 of her daughters. In 1870 Christina (sic) married a gentleman from San
Francisco and removed with him to California. Shortly afterward her next oldest
daughter, who was the wife of Mr Kaun, and artist in this city, died, leaving
only Ida, the youngest, a beautiful girl of 17. Ida showed signs of mental
aberration a fortnight ago, but appeared to recover. Yesterday a letter was
received from the brother-in-law in San Francisco which said that Christina had
also become insane. Ida heard about it and went mad and was to be taken to an
asylum. Ernestina was then found by her brother Mr Kahn with blood gushing out
(vivid description). Then another brother, Professor in Dr Anthony's Commercial
Institute came. Then Ida was taken to Bloomingdale Asylum.
