"Alfred Benscher and his nephew Leo Benscher were involved in an international
crime investigation, mainly focused on Alfred. There was half a million
dollars taken fraudulently, and there are several NY Times articles from 1925
on the affair. We know from family stories that the two Benscher men fled to
Canada. Leo went on to England with his wife Elsa Benscher Benscher (Alfred's
daughter and Leo's cousin) where his two daughters were born. Alfred returned
secretly to NY when his wife died in 1930, he is said to have died 6 months
later."

P/c NY Times 16, 17, 18, 19 Dec 1925: closure of Alfred Benscher & co brokers &
State investigation
From Sharon Purcell:
"Alfred Benscher was born in the year that Kaiser Wilhelm I gave unprecedented
rights to German Jews. He would be in the first generation of Jewish Germans
able to work as professionals in Germany. Alfred attained a Law degree from
Erlangen University in Nuremberg, Germany around 1897. He only practiced law
for a few years in Germany before immigrating to England, then to NY. His
dissertation is on the profits of real estate. He later became a real estate
broker in Brooklyn, NY. He was also the financial editor for the German
Language News paper, Staats Zeitung, in NYC, and opereated a German bonds
company. His ship manifests list him as a writer.

There is a family story of Alfred Benscher traveling to the 1904 Worlds Fair in
St. Louis in conjuction with his family's leather good business. We know from
one of his ship manifests, that he arrives in NYC a few weeks before the
World's Fair was scheduled to open in April. Wilhelmina and two of their
daughters had arrived in December, stating that they were meeting their
husband/father in St Louis. The story indicates that during this visit he
decided to move to the United States. The family would return to the US in
1905, again traveling separately. The girls and Wilhelmina arrived a month
earlier than Alfred.

There a differing family stories about the family leaving Germany the second
time. They vary from Alfred fleeing from conscription into the German army,
legal problems with the German government, and family problems due to
Wilhelmina being Catholic.

Alfred's ship manifests of 1904 and 1905 list him as being a resident of
London, England. He is listed in the Berlin Addres book till 1906.

Family stores tell that Alfred was frustrated at not being ablae to practice
law in the U.S. with out returning to school, which he felt was beneath his
dignity. There is also a story that his daughter Blanche told about him being
very proud of a multi-layered cape he owned. One day, she childishly said,
"Papa you look just like the coachman." He was said to have never worn that
cape again.

Alfred is said to have spoken perfect English when he moved to New York. It is
told that when he enrolled his daughters, Blanche and Elsa at school, he didn't
mention that they spoke only German, and the teachers were confused as to why
they did not answer the first day. He insisted the family speak English in his
presence.

Family stories also tell of Alfred encouraging the Benscher music tradition.
Most of his children played instruments or sang. He was said to have taken
them to operas and concerts. His daughter Florence kept a red cape she wore to
the opera with him.

In 1925, Alfred and his nephew lost their German bond business due to financial
and legal problems. Additional information can be found in four, December 1925
New York Times Articles. Alfred left the country to go to Canada with his
nephew, Leo Benschser, the business treasurer, and an English citizen. Family
stories indicate that they went to stay with relatives, probably Leo's mother
in Toronoto.

Family has only spoke kindly and respectfully of Alfred. He was said to have
returned to NY when his wife was dying, and died himself six months later. The
family was able to stay in the grand house that he had bought them till 1932. "

[N1895] This text is from the E-book Jack the Ripper: A Suspect Guide by Christopher J.
Morley (2005):
Mr George Strachey contacted the police in Dresden to inform them that a young
American-German medical student of his named Julius I Lowenheim, had mentioned
to him his suspicion about a Polish Jew, whom he used to meet at a Christian
home in Finsbury Square, called Julius Wirtofsky. Wirtofsky had consulted
Lowenheim on a special pathological condition which was troubling him
(syphilis?) and told Lowenheim that he wished to kill the person concerned, and
all the rest of her class. Lowenheim, who stated that he could identify
Wirtofsky without fail, had previously contacted the police in London about the
matter without success. Apart from his grudge against prostitutes, nothing else
is known about Julius Wirtofsky.
http://forum.casebook.org/showthread.php?t=1120
From Evans & Skinner:

The letter was received at the Foreign Office on Dec 14, 1888, and the next day
receipted at the Home Office by C.M. (whom I assume to be Charles Murdoch,
Assistant Under-Secretary) and also forwarded to Police.

Dresden
11 December 1888

My Lord,

Regarding American German, Julius I. Lowenheim, came here this morning with a
statement respecting the Whitehapel murders. He said that shortly before the
occurence of the first crime he became acquainted in a "Christian Home" in
Finsbury Square, with a Polish Jew one Julius Wirtkofksky, who, after
consult[ting] him on a special pathological con[dition] told him that he was
determined to kill the person conc[erned and] all the rest of her cl[ass]
informant added, that he had recently addressed the London Police Authorities
on the subject, without having received an answer.

He further said that he could throw no light on the subsequent movements of
Wirtkofsky but that he could identify him without fail.

Lowenheim stated that his address, after the next few days would be, Poste
Restante Nuremburg. It of course struck me that I had heard a similar [ ]
before, and that the youth's object was to accomplish a journey to London,
gratis.

However, he showed no anxiety in that respect, and the impression which he made
upon me was not unfavourable.

[signature &c. illegible.]

---------------------------------------------------

Charles Van Onselen wondered aloud if one of the people he researched is this
man, one Ze'ev Wulf Witkofsky/Wilkowski, sometimes Wilf or Wolf, who turns up
in recorded history in the prostitution trade in South Africa at the turn of
the century. However, the author could not trace his antecedents, or verify his
presence in London in 1888.

I find it an odd coincidence that Julius is the first name of the young doctor,
and of the man he reported.

[N1958] Wangers was the man who gave us the Pontiac GTO."Glory Days" gives an insider's
view of the ugly side of things, too - Wangers changed his name from
Wangersheim to Wangers in an industry unwelcoming to Jews in high places, but
it wasn't enough to spare him slings and arrows from the bigot brigade.
