HO17/58/79 Petitions
KN29 in Box labelled Part 2
"1 individual petition (prisoner) and 1 collective petition (6 people including
the prosecutor) on behalf of Robert Paveley, labourer, convicted at Chelmsford
Assizes of stealing a ram lamb, property of Jeremiah Reynolds farmer of
Cranham, Essex. There is also a letter from Thomas Ludbey, Rector of Cranham,
stating Paveley's character notoriously bad and has a reputation as a thief,
petitioners coerced into signing. Grounds for clemency: driven to crime by
need, first offence. Initial sentence: death. Annotated: negative. KN29"
Petition by Robert & others, including the prosecutor.
30 Jul 1828 Robert PAVELEY of Cranham, lab, in gaol in Essex. Convicted at last
Assizes in Chelmsford for stealing a ram lamb property of Jeremiah Reynolds of
Cranham, farmer.
Sentenced to death.
"Contrition for having been guilty of such a heinous crime"

Letter by Rev Ludbey, Rector of Cranham, 6 Aug 1828 saying that Robert's
father had prepared a petition for gis son. However, Ludbey says that Robert is
of "notoriously bad character", known to be a thief ( though no previous
convictions), and had "introduced his two daughters to the lowest debauchery".
Suggests clemency should not be given.
