Emigrated 1842 to New York. Moved to Canada in search of cheap land. Bought
land in E. Nissouri Twp, Oxford Co., Canada West (Ontario). 1853 went by ship
throu the Panama Canal to California Gold Rush. Returned 2 years later.
Farmed for a bit but had enough money so he didn't have to work hard again.
Retired to St. Marys and travelled to see his brothers in Michigan and
British Columbia. Went home to England for a visit in 1868. Married twice
but had no children. Kept a wonderfully interesting journal.

[N1888] no children. Travelled with her husband from New Jersey to backwoods of
Canada West Ontario) then to the California Gold Rush and back to Canada West
and on his trips to New York State, Michigan, Wisconsin, etc.
She developed a heart condition shortly after they moved from East Nissouri
to St. Marys in 1876.

[N1889] immigrated with her parents and siblings to Ontario near Toronto (nee Kidd).
a widow living in St. Marys when she married William.
After William's death she married his younger
brother, Abe in Victoria, B.C. where she lived the remainder of her life.

neighbours help, moved his house using 16 yoke of oxen from the first farm
to the second.
Served on township and county councils.
Retired to Queen St. East, St. Marys.
According to his obituary Josiah was only confined to his bed for two days
prior to his death but had been in failing health for some time.

Nissouri Twp. by the Rev T.B.Brown, resident of Browns Corners and
an itinerant preacher who road his horse throughout a large pioneer.

Lived in St. Marys for 32 years after retiring. Kept a beautiful flower garde

Royal Irish Rifles No.50137 and was awarded the VICTORY CROSS and the BRITISH
CROSS as documented in the PRO Medal Index. During the 2nd World War he joined
the National Fire Service as a volunteer and on a part-time bases He was
promoted to be Company Officer on 18.12.1943 by his Senior Officer Jordon Smith
M.B.E. He occupation as Officer of the Department was with the Inland Revenue,
New Wing, Somerset House, London, W.C.2 At the time of death his address was 85

Originally thought to be a spectacle maker but Anthony wrote "He was not a
spectacle maker or freeman of the city but a draper/warehouseman. Iain Pavely
wrote that he joined the Society of Spectacle Makers in 1834, but had no
connection with making spectacles.
"In 1825 the year of his marriage to Hannah WELLS he was a witness at a trial
at the Old Bailey against Henry JOHNSON for theft 16 Feb 1826."
