St Andrews Citizen 17 Oct 1908:
"SUDDEN DEATH OF A FISHERMAN
Thomas Waters fisherman aged 67 died very suddenly on Monday morning. A number
of the fishing boats were to leave early that morning and Waters was in his
boat preparing to go out along with the others when he suddenly fell back, and
expired. The other fishermen when they saw Waters' condition, left their boats
and carried him to his house. They at once summoned Dr Paton, who could only
say that life was extinct. The sad event caused great consternation among the
fishermen, and they did not go out to sea that day. Mr Waters was a good
specimen of his class, and was a hard-working, steady, man, and greatly
respected by his fellows. He leaves a wife and grown up family."

months service to the Pretoria Club, Lawrence was invited to become a
Professional golfer with the Johannesburg Club and, according to the Golfing

[N2793] St Andrews. 'Passing of an old fisherman -Mr Thomas G Litster. ST
ANDREWS CITIZEN 11TH FEB 1939.
(14 Apr 1998) The ranks of the few remaining Fishermen have been
further thinned by the death of Mr Thomas Gourlay Litster, 55 Boase
Avenue, on Tuesday. He had not been in good health recently and was 71
years of age. Mr Litster had a very close connection with the fishing
industry at St Andrews. His Father was a Sailmaker and had his
workshop above the Auld Hoose at the harbour and he also went to the
fishing. The son naturally became a fisherman when he left the Burgh
School and after getting a knowledge of the sea, he was for a number of
years a sailor. Two local sailing vessels he sailed on were the
'Nellie' and the 'Jessie' and he was also a sailor on an English
vessel. He visited various English ports and sometimes went as far as
Norway. After this experience. He settled down at the local fishing
again. When the Great War broke out he volunteered for service on the
patrol boats engaged in mine-sweeping and served till the close of
hostilities. For some twenty years he was a member of the Lifeboat crew
and took part in a number of rescues at wrecks. When the fishing
industry began to decline he, like most of the old fishermen, went to
caddie at the Links and was well known to many golfers. He was most
respected by all who knew him. His wife predeceased him about two years
ago and he is survived by three sons and four daughters. Three brothers
and six of his sisters also survive him. The funeral took place at the
Cathedral Burial Ground today Friday.

Death registered by James Litster son. 6 Watson Avenue, St Andrews.
Fife. Died at 55 Boase Avenue, St Andrews.

From Source 29: "ST ANDREWS TIMES, 14TH SEPTEMBER, 1938: LINK WITH
FISHING INDUSTRY BROKEN
One of the few remaining St Andrews fishermen passed away this week severing
another link with this old industry. Deceased was Mr Andrew (Alexander)
Cunningham who died in his 72nd year at 28 North Street. A son of the late Mr
David Cunningham, a well-known fisherman in his day. He went to the fishing
when a boy and stuck to it for about half a century, retiring about nine years
ago when the industry had greatly declined. He went to sea in the family boats,
one of which was the "Seagull". He
was unmarried. There were three sons and three daughters in the family and
survivors are Mr Lindsay Cunningham and Mrs A Chisholm."
