Historical Overview of Guntersblum:

The area of Guntersblum was settled by the 5th or 6th Century, as shown by archaeological remains (gravesites) in the area. The first written mention of Guntersblum dates from 897. From the 13th Century, Guntersblum was ruled by the House of Leinigen. Leinigen rule was brought to an end in 1798 by the French Revolution. French rule ended in 1814 after Napoleon's defeat in Russia. In 1816, Guntersblum became part of the Grand Duchy of Hessen.
Guntersblum was again occupied after both World Wars; today it is part of the German state of Rheinland-Pfalz. In 1972, it became the municipal seat of the Verbandsgemeinde (unified community) of Guntersblum. The population of Guntersblum in 2001 was 3,944.

Name:

Supposedly, the Burgundian king Gunther spoke of the village as a flower; hence, Guntersblum (Gunther's flower).

Churches:

The Churches of St. Viktor
Evangelische Kirche Guntersblum     The original Church of St. Viktor was built about 1100. In 1617/18, the nave was torn down because of structural deterioration, and rebuilding began in 1619. Because of the Thirty Years' War, construction was only completed between 1685 and 1688. In 1702, the south tower of the church collapsed. It was rebuilt in 1839-1842. (The rebuilt tower is seen with clock in the photo at left.)
The Catholics and Lutherans shared one church for about a hundred years. Then, in 1844-1845, a new Catholic Church of St. Viktor was built with the help of municipal authorities.
Today the two communities enjoy good relations and joint activities.
