 John's 4th-Great-Grandfather, Elijah Hall (ca. 1794 - 1888) about 1885

Elijah Hall was born between 1791 and 1799 in North Carolina, near the Virginia line. Some researchers say his father was Bolivar Hall, others say Richard Hall. The following account was written by Lindsey Hall and published in Batesburg-Leesville Area History:
Sharon Hall writes that Elijah was knocked down by a runaway horse and never regained the use of his legs. He was in a coma for a short time, then regained consciousness, but "with paralysis death came shortly thereafter." He died at the home of his son Elbert. Sharon also writes: "Elijah always stated that his father was from England and his mother was
half-Cherokee Indian." Elijah Hall's exact burial place is unknown, but there is a large memorial stone at the Halltown Cemetery in Lexington County.
About the year 1820 Elijah Hall, Sr. and his brother Joel being dissatisfied with living conditions in North Carolina, decided to hunt greener pastures and started on a trek down through the Carolinas with some area in Alabama being their destination. After arriving in Columbia, South Carolina, they took the short cut from Columbia to Aiken along a road that is now called the Two Notch Road. Upon arriving at the home of John Quattlebaum (which is now the Furman Brodie Home Place and Pond) Elijah and Joel discovered there a shop where Mr. Quattlebaum did machine shop work and made guns. This interested the Halls as that was their work and following back in North Carolina. They liked the Quattlebaum family and remained there most of the rest of their lives. Elijah and Joel rented a house from John Quattlebaum. They also set up a shop of their own and engaged in machine shop work, made guns, rifles and pistols and did repair work in various kinds of equipment.
Elijah Hall married Mary "Polly" Vansant about 1825, and they were the parents of eleven children born between 1827 and 1850.

The photo at left is of Elijah Hall's grandson Elijah Hall (1862-1940), son of the Rev. Lemuel Hall (1830-1918) and Eliza Mims. Lemuel Hall was a Baptist preacher who, according to Lindsey Hall, "helped organize and build Providence Baptist Church, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Pine Grove Baptist Church and several others." Elijah, the grandson, was the father of Lindsey Goebel Hall (1905-1985), whose account is quoted on this page.
