My 2nd-great-grandmother, Minerva Phillips Gouge, was born in 1811 in Burke County, North Carolina, and died in 1892 in Mitchell County, North Carolina. She is buried at the Gouge Cemetery near Cub Creek, north of Bakersville in Mitchell County. Mitchell County researchers universally accept her as a daughter of Lazarus P. Phillips, Sr., and his wife Jane (Jennie) Garland. However, I have not personally seen any documentation of this relationship.
Most researchers identify Lazarus P. Phillips, Sr., as the son of Nehemiah Phillips and Elizabeth Brown. I have tentatively accepted the descent of Lazarus P. Phillips, Sr. from Christopher Phillips, as shown at left, and intend to investigate this lineage further. Please note, however, the suggestion of Dawn Watson, who lists Lazarus and Thrower Phillips as the sons of yet another Lazarus Phillips, who was born before 1765 and lived in Buncombe County in 1810. (Ms. Watson has also found him in the 1790 and 1800 Censuses, but I haven't tracked those down yet.) On the face of it, Ms. Watson's theory seems the more likely. The 1850 and 1860 Censuses both report that Lazarus P. Phillips, Sr., was born in North Carolina and not in Maryland, and in the 1810 Census he is found in close proximity to the other Lazarus and to Thrower. On the other hand, Ms. Watson does not seem to have concentrated on the Phillips line to any great extent. But I think her theory must also be investigated, and may turn out to be the correct one.
