Burroughs Cemetery

Location:  At the intersection of U.S. Highway 190 and FM 350 go north on FM 350 for 8.5 miles.
        The cemetery is located on the right side in deep woods about 1.5 miles. The cemetery is
        located on property owned by a lumber company and permission from them is needed to enter.

        Davis Burroughs and his family came to Polk County from Cassville, Cass (later changed to
Bartow) County, Ga. in 1851. Burroughs bought several thousand acres of the Daniel Wilburn
League near the Colita Community in the Louisiana Settlement of families. Davis Burroughs was
married twice and his first wife was buried in Georgia. Her name is unknown. His second marriage
was to Nancy C. Godfry. The cemetery was located near the family residence. Burials were from
1865-1895 in this cemetery.   The following are the known burials in this cemetery.

        wife of  Dilliard Burroughs. Married on Feb. 10, 1857.
Burroughs, George Washington Taylor,  b.  1849 Ga.  d. prior to 1900,
        married on Apr 29, 1869 to Fannie Womack and to Emiline Harris on Apr. 21, 1880.
Burroughs, James Davis,  b.  1844 Ga.   d. Jun 16, 1865,
        son of Davis & Nancy Burroughs,
        Private, Co. E, 20th Texas Infantry, Elmore's Regiment,C.S.A.
Burroughs, Thomas Jefferson,  b. 1842 Ga.  d. 1870,
        Private, Co. K, 5th Texas Infantry, Hood's Brigade.
        Married on Oct. 26, 1865 to Mrs. Leonora N. (Womack) Jones.
Burroughs, William Frances "Fannie" (Womack),  b. 1844 Ala.  d. 1880,
        wife of  George Washington Taylor Burroughs.
Meece, Nancy C. (Godfry) Burroughs,  b. Apr. 1823 Ga.  d. aft. Nov. 1902 Harris Co. Tx.,
        married to Davis Burroughs and W. C. Meece.
Rogers, Sarah A. (Burroughs),  b. 1836 Tenn.  d. ca.1868,
        married in 1850 in Georgia to William P. Rogers.
Rogers,  William Pickney,  b. Feb 15, 1825 S.C.  d. July 12, 1878,
        husband of Sarah Burroughs and Alafair "Allie" Moody Baggett.
Towns, Henry Amos,  b. 1831 Ga.   d. ca. 1895, married to Mary S. E. Burroughs.
Towns, Mary S. E. (Burroughs),  b. 1838 Tenn.  d. ca. 1895,
        married on July 6, 1854 to Henry Amos Towns.

The Burroughs children who moved away from Polk County were:
    Dillard R. Burroughs of Coleman Co. Tx. whose second marriage was to Eva C. Beall;
    Louisa "Lucy" Burroughs Flake of Bell Co. Tx. who was married to Andrew Jackson Flake;
    John E. Burroughs, M.D. of Erath Co. Tx. who was married to Janie Lenear;
    and William S. Burroughs of Harris Co. Tx who married Sarah P. Bonds.

A Memorial Marker was placed in this cemetery in 1991 by the Rogers Family in memory
of those and others they could remember who were buried there:
