Following the Civil War in 1865, Hannah Jackson, 50, and her son and daughter-in-law,
both age 25 years, moved from Georgia to the Moscow community. All three were freed
mulatto slaves who came to Texas seeking a new Life. By 1870 they had moved to the
Midway community of Polk County where her son, Nathan Griggs worked as a carpenter
and Hannah worked as a domestic housekeeper. Hannah lived with Nathan and Josephine
Griggs. She died on his property in 1885 and he carved her name and date of death on a
large stone for her grave. Hannah Jackson is the only known burial in the Jackson Cemetery.
