FOUR GENERATIONS OF FAMILY SHOWN HERE The eldest is Mrs. Mattie E. Runnels of Leggett (left): her daughter, Mrs. Dora Carter of Beaumont; Mrs. Carter's son, Horace, (center);and the latter's daughter, Ruth Carter (in front). Mrs. Runnels, the oldest survivor of her family, was born in Alabama 80 years ago. She lived for a time in Louisiana and came to Texas after the Civil War. After her marriage to Will E. Runnels, she made her home in Polk County until his death in 1915, when she went to Leggett to make her home with her daughter. Mrs. Runnels has four living children, namely, Mrs. Dora Carter of Beaumont; Mrs. Tom Kerr, of Leggett; Mrs. Donia McDonald and Mrs. Martha Shepherd, of Leggett. Seventeen grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren are numbered among her descendants." |
