Cobey Posey to his sister Elizabeth Posey
6 Jan 1862 – Pelican Camp, VA
Camp Pelican
January 16, 1862
Miss E. C. Posey,
Dear Sister,
As it has been sometime since I have written to any of the family. I have
concluded to write you a few lines in answer to your letter of the 29th _____.
As I have a good opportunity of sending it by Sam Hood who is going home on a
discharge. I think it best as he will not be able for duty before our time is
out. Sis you wish to know how we enjoyed Christmast. We enjoyed it as well as we
could of expected on Christmast morning we had an egg nog given by Lee Davis
which we enjoyed fine. We pass off the other portion of the days in talking of
the past. Sis you wished to know if we drilled any that day. We didn’t drill
nor work any on Christmas day. As for drilling we have drilled but very little
since I arrive here. Sis you wish to know whither the weather is much colder in
Virginia than it general was there. I think it a great deal colder but we do not
feel it as we are so much hevier clad. We wear three shirts, two pare of drawers
which we were not uste to ware at home and the changes are not so sudden. We
have had a snow the other day about four inches deep. It is raining and melting
it now but I do not think it will continue to rain much longer as it is so cold.
Sis, you wish to if have moved in our winter quarters. We have finished them and
moved in them. They are very comfortable lined inside with board on chunked and
doubled outside. They are sixteen feet square and dirt floor and six in a house
but ours only has five. Our Mess has changed some little. Monroe has lefte us by
the order of the Col. He wished all the drumers to mess together. And Monroe had
to leave us then. We took Anderson Davis in our Mess. Sis, I suppose it is
reported that our Mess fell out and broak up. It is not so. We still together
and expect to remain together until we are disbanded.
Sis you wish to wheather we got all the articles that was sent us. We have not
received the box but suppose it is in Yorktown as there is a great many boxes
there for the regiment. We will receive them in a few days. Sis I have given you
all the news that I can think of.
Winter and myself are both in good health. I am flesher than I ever was. My
weight is 148 lbs. Sis say to Ellen that I have been looking for an answer from
her for some time. Sis I miss chase. Give my respects to Miss Mattie Veal also
tell her she is mistaken about my forgetting my friends. Give my love to all the
family and except a proportion yourself.
