Marcus De Lafayette Cocanougher's Personal Journal 1800's to the Early 1900's

Marcus De Lafayette Coccanougher, b. Oct 21, 1853, was the son of William Cocanougher and Elizabeth (Betsy) Young; William in turn was the son of George and Patsy (Hilton) Cocanougher; Patsy Hilton was the daughter of John and Margaret (Farrell) Hilton; Elizabeth Young was the daughter of John & Ann (Lawson) Young.

M.D.L. never married. Pagination refers to microfilm and manuscript pages from 6-48. "M.D.L. Cocanougher's Personal Journal 1800's to the Early 1900's" It is all in reference to the area known early as Pottsville & Texas in Washington Co., KY. He seems to have interviewed the elder citizens, and his mother, on their memories of the families there from the early formation of the county in the 1790s. I've found a few errors but not many.

pg. 3, Early Settlers on Louse or Long Run: Hilton Family;
John Hilton my great-greatfather came to Kentuck from Buchanan Co., Virginia in 1777. Married Margaret Ferril, one of the (3 or 8, no. cannot be made out) children that escaped from the "Baughman Massacree" or "Baughman's Defeat" on Negro Creek 2 miles east of Crab Orchard in the fall of 1779 or spring of 1780. Margaret was the mother of the following children, Obedience who married John McDonald, John who married Amy Conners, William, and Henry who died June 25, 1868, Eleanor who married Adam Young, Matilda married a Charles Powell, Malinda married Jonathan Young, Ruth who married Peter Towson (?), Margaret or Peggy as she was sometimes called remained single, Martha married George Cocanougher (my grandfather Cocanougher), and Cristenia married a man by the name of Hilton.

Obedience Hilton McDonald husband died Nov 15, 1833 that memorial night in which the stars fell. he was the father of the following children, Elizabeth Baker who married Nelson Sweeney, Carlotta who died single, William Chandler, who married 4 or 5 times, Margaret married John Padget, Matilda married a man named Kidwell, Rachel Scott married Joseph Drain, Violetta married George W. Nicholas, Eleanor died single, George Henry married a Lansdowns, Oswal died single, Martha married James Davis Simmons. The above was dictated by Martha McDonald Simmons to her son John Simmons, near Macomb, Ill. Mar. 1912. (microfilm notation states several pages or missing at this point)

Next mention of the surname Hilton is on pg. 29;
On the South side we find a one room cabin occupied by Harry Hilton bro. of William Hilton and a cousin of Pa's, afterwards occupied by Bill Mays bro. of Berry Mayes. Hilton moved to Missouri.

pg. 32; We now come back to Stumps Branch North of Pottsville, to where we find the Widdow Obedience McDonald who was an Aunt of Pa's. She was a Hilton. During her Husband(s) lifetime she lived in John Coyle's bottom on Louse Run on the north side of the creek near Wes Kimberlin's line. where the first house in the county was built. here her husband John died the night the stars fell in Nov. 1833. Aunt Biddy as she was called with her family moved to McDonough Co., Ill. in 1857. She lived a short distance below the Jonathan Young house is still standing.

Joel T. Baughman was born March 4, 1825, in Lincoln (now Boyle) County, KY., where he grew to manhood; in 1851 he removed to Lincoln County, and in 1866 to "Okland Place," near the Frying Pan bend of Dicks River, Garrard County, where he now resides. His father, Henry Baughman, Jr., a native of Virginia, was born in 1776; he came to Kentucky in 1780; remained here two years with his family, then went back to the "Old Dominion" for his mother; he was a farmer and large slave owner; was assessor of property in Lincoln County, a Whig, and died in 1865. He was the son of Henry Baughman, of Virginia, who was murdered by Indians eight miles above Crab Orchard, when the Indians opened fire, and Henry Baughman, Sr., was killed in his attempt to give his relatives a chance to escape. The children born to Henry, SR., were Nancy (Gilbreath), Ticia (Duncan), Polly (McGill), Jacob and John (both killed at St. Clair's defeat), and Herny, Jr. Henry, Jr., married Patience, daughter of William Owsley, of Lincoln County (born 1784, died 1842) and to them were born Hamilton, William O., Rebecca (Shanks), Jacob, John, Henry, Samuel O., Nancy (Dunn), Nudiget O., and Joel T. Joel T. Baughman was married July 19, 1849, to Miss Sallie, daughter of Isaac and Cyrena (Wooly) Dunn, of Garrard County, born February 20, 1833, and having no children of their own they have reared John T. Baughman, Cyrena M. Craig and Lizzie S. Dunn. Mr. Baughman is a farmer, owning 279 acres of well imporved land. In 1884 he was elected superintendent of common schools of Garrard County, and in 1886 was re-elected to the same position for a term of four years. Mr. Baughman is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and in politics is identified with the Democratic party. He lost ten valuable slaves as a result of the late war.

Hilton Family from Washington Co. Ky History

William Carroll Hilton was born Christman Day 1827 in Washington County. When he was 24 years old, he traveled to Bath County where he wed Nancy Arrasmith on Jan. 7, 1851. Nancy, born Sept. 18, 1832, was the daughter of Wesley and Catherine (Butler) Arrasmith. William supported his family by farming and later in life became a circuit riding minister. Soilders camped on his farm during the Civil War but did not harm his family or property. The couple had eight children, for of whom died in infancy. Those who survi ved were: Wesley D. (1851-?) who moved to Cass Co., MO; Henry (1854-1919); Narcissa (1856-1874) married Thomas Graves; and Abner A. (1865-1943) married Bettie Devine. One day, when William was watering his horse, nearby woodcutters rolled a log down a hill causing his horse to spook and him to fall. His head hit a rock and he died Christmas Eve 1896.

Williams father was Henry Hilton who was born Feb. 13, 1794 in the Silver Creek area of Madison County. He moved with his parents to Washington County around 1810 and married Amey Conners on July 23, 1816. In addition to William their children were: John Ferrill (1817-1862) married Susan Frances Hatchett and was killed by a Confederate Soilder because of a citizens mistake; Henry H. (1819-1862) married Nancy Paddocks and moved to Des Moines, IA where he was a Sergeant in Co. D. 2nd Iowa Cavalry in the Union Army. He died from illness incured in the army.

Henrys parents were John and Margaret (Farrill) Hilton. John came to Kentucky from Buchanan Co. Va and was both scout and hunter for the Transylvania Land Company. He married Margaret Ferrill Aug. 4, 1788 in Madison Co., Ky with their license being signed by William Irvine, Hero of the Battle of Little Mountain. Margaret survived the Baughman Massacre which occurred near Crab Orchard in the Fall of 1779 or the Spring of 1780. Her father, John, and Uncle Capt. Jacob Baughman were among those killed. It was reported Jcob might have escaped if he had not tried to save his father. Margaret reported she could hear Capt. Baughman holler stick to them boys for a long time, even after she was far away. In 1813, John pruchased land on Beech Fork in Washington Co., KY. He was on of the early settlers of Long Run and died in 1841. In addition to Henry, John and Margarets children were: Margaret Peggy (1789-1860); Obedience 1791-?) married John McDonald; John married Polly Young; William; Eleanor married Adam Young; Matilda married Henry Powell; Malinda married Jonathan Young; Ruth married Peter Townsend; Martha Patys (1801-1850) married George Cocanougher and Christina married a Mr. Hilton.

Lee's Conjecture of John Hilton Line
John Hilton (? - 1719?) New Kent County Virginia m.Elizabeth __?__ (? - 1718?)

Notes From Lee Hylton
I had already come across your genealogy info on John Hilton a few weeks ago and found it to be very interesting. The names of the children are curious in that they match family names in the Hilton's that don't have clear connections with other Hilton families more heavily documented:
- Obediance was the name of one of the daughters of my gggg-grandfather Elisha Helton, as well as the name of John Hilton's wife. This is not a name common in other Hilton familes in Virginia.
- Henry is a name that appears in the Patrick County area, again from a group of Hiltons whose ancestors are not clear.
- William is unusual in that it is a name that seems to be more associated with the Hiltons of Scott County VA (descendents of St.Mary's County MD Hilton family) and New York/New England Hiltons.
- To further confuse things (for my research anyway), is that 2 sons of Elisha Helton had names that appear only in North Carolina Hilton families, and later in Kentucky and Tennessee (Pleasant and Alexander) and one of them was named Jesse which is a name that appears in nearly all branches of the family..
The only information I have on John Hilton and Obediance Cox:
- John Hilton and Obedient Coke married November 24, 1757 in Goochland County, VA. [Source: The Douglass Register - parish records]
- John Hilton and Obediance Cox a son named George born May 20, 1761.
Baptised September 13, 1761 [same source as above]
- Obediance Cox was the daughter of John Cox of Goochland - St. James Northam Parish. His will dated 1785 mentions sons Edward, Henry, and John [maybe this is where the name Henry was introduced into the Hilton family] and daughters Obediance Hilton and [Glafie?Gladys?] Davis [her first name was illegible]. So Obediance was still alive and apparently in Virginia as late as 1785.
- A Hylton researcher's notes (Hatcher King, 1975) states that Jesse Hilton was the son of John Hilton and Obediance Cox and married Elizabeth Weddle, d/o Benjamin Weddle.
- I received the following e-mail about 2 months ago:
"Jesse is my ancestor. His daughter is Elizabeth b. in KY abt 1810 acc. to my undocumented info."
- a book I had seen a few years ago on the early settlers of Kentucky mentioned John Hilton and his son Jesse (I neglected to write down the title or authors name).
- Jesse Hilton served in Captain William Triggs Company in Lord Dunmores War 1774. - sometime between 1783 and 1787, Jesse Hilton moved to Kentucky. He had a land grant in Henry County VA in 1783, then appears on the Lincoln (KY) tax list of 1787 and Madison (KY) tax list of 1789, and 1810 census of Floyd County KY.
Good luck with your research.........
