Our earliest Maples ancestor identified by our research is Josiah Maples who was born 1746 in Virginia, married Ruthea Sweeney in 1765 Pittsylvania County, Virginia and died 12 Nov 1820, Sevier County, Tennessee. Others have named William Maples as Josiah's father, but our own research has not confirmed or disproved that. We do believe that Josiah had brothers named Wilson, William and John Maples. From Josiah, our line descends through Jesse Maples and Jemimah (possibly Atchley) and their son James Gunter Maples and wife Ann Catherine Tate who migrated from Tennessee to Carroll County, Arkansas soon after 1850.
