~Preece
Memorial Fund~
On
August 8th, 2003 the Preece Memorial Committee met at Ida’s Tea
Room, in Inez, KY, to put together a plan to provide improvements to the
cemetery where Alexander Boone Preece and his wife Lovina Stratton Preece are
buried. Alexander born March 22,
1794, in Russell Co., VA, and who died May 04, 1873 in Inez is the patriarch
of all the Preece families from Martin County.
The old sandstone tombstones that currently mark their graves are
weathered and hardly legible.
Plans
were made to purchase a monument for Alexander Boone and Lovina that would fit
the old cemetery as aesthetically as possible.
We will also provide a plaque giving historical information about the
family. The plaque will be
attached to the large natural stone that lies near Alexander’s grave.
And, if adequate funds are raised, we plan to purchase smaller
tombstones for Alexander’s sons, Cornelius and William along with their
wives. Any funds remaining from
the project will be donated to the Martin County Historical and Genealogical
Society to help preserve Martin County History and Genealogy for future
generations.
The
Smith-Preece cemetery where Alexander, his wife and sons are buried lies on
Coldwater Rd in Inez, KY. The
first phase of the cemetery improvement began on Saturday August the 9th
when the large bush covering Alex and his son’s headstones was removed.
We plan to have a dedication ceremony on Memorial Day a.m. 2004 at the
cemetery. All who are interested
are invited to attend.
