a Holocaust Remembrance Series for Young Readers (on Amazon-click on picture or Abebooks) "..And it was here that some brave young people decided to create a newspaper, a magazine that would prove to themselves and their community that they were still creative, energetic, and adventurous. The magazine, “Klepy” (which means Gossip), was born on August 30, 1940, and over the next two years, twenty-two issues were created and circulated. The magazine included simple type-written stories, elaborate paintings, and editorials, all created in the midst of war. John was one of the young “reporters” who contributed to the magazine." and After Those Fifty Years, Memoirs of the Birkenau Boys, Edited by John Freund; "..It is a compilation of Biographies and recollections of those who survived the subsequent ten months; a most difficult time between the fateful Mengele "selection" and the end of the war. Some of the boys were sent from the Maennerlager to other camps. In January 1945, as the Russians advanced from the east, all of Auschwitz was liquidated and those prisoners capable of working were evacuated to other camps further to the west. Thousands perished while marching in freezing weather to distant railways stations.." from Pier 21 site
Note: see christadelphiansisters.org Susan's; How My Mother, Sis. Hana Holman, Learnt the Truth: "Life was very sweet, back then in the 1930's. It was a carefree and happy existence for Hana, her sister Ruth and her parents, Marta and Ernst Ofner.. The live-in maid Sofie organized the cooking, the washing and ironing and the girls lived a life of ease. Although their mother rarely prepared the meals, Hana has memories of Grandmother Bertha making apple strudel with Auntie Pulli.. Hana and her family lived in a flat above the Kafka grandparents. The Kafkas were Marta's parents. Grandfather Leopold Kafka was a coffee importer.. Jakob Ofner kept the strong Jewish traditions and encouraged the family to regularly attend the synagogue.. The day of departure soon arrived. The family traveled up to Prague. Six hundred and twenty children were leaving for England on the Kindertransport that day.. When the war was finally over, they knew in their hearts that their parents were not alive. One day, Hana opened an official letter. It said simply, that Marta and Ernst had perished at Auschwitz in October 1944. The war was over, but there was no family in Czechoslovakia to return to, so Hana and Ruth remained in England.."

Note: New York Times "North Carolina Art Museum Says It Will Return Painting Tied to Nazi Theft": After confirming that one of its most prized paintings had been stolen by the Nazis during World War II from an Austrian Jewish art collector, the North Carolina Museum of Art announced plans this week to give the painting back to its rightful owners, two sisters (Philip von Gumfretz descendants) in Austria. The painting, ''Madonna and Child in a Landscape'' by Lucas Cranach the Elder, a German Renaissance artist, was deeded to the museum in 1964 by an art collector in Beverly Hills, Calif. The museum received the painting when that collector, Marianne Khuner, died in 1984.. CBS News Doing The Right Thing With Stolen Art: ".They also knew that by leaving the Cranach in North Carolina, the story of the painting and of their great uncle's sacrifice would continue to be told. As for the painting, there are plans for an exhibition which will explain its history and will honor Philip von Gumfretz and the generosity of his descendants."
