Cora Harper

Cora Mae Harper, 74, of Portland, Tenn. died Sept. 22, 2005 at her residence. Born in Franklin, Ky. On May 8, 1931 to the late Woodie Excell and Pauline Edward Faller Hines. She was a 1949 graduate of Franklin-Simpson High School and a graduate of B.U. College of Bowling Green.

She was married to Marion Lester Oliver Harper on June 18, 1950. They lived On a 100-acre farm in Portland and farmed 300 acres including the homeplace in Franklin, Ky.

Mrs. Harper is retired from the Sumner County Archives. She worked at North Portland School Cafeteria (Watt Hardison) and at the Simpson County Loose Leaf Tobacco, Roby and Gillespie Tobacco Floors as well as the Strawberry Cannery in Portland she also sold Avon for several  years. She was the first president of the West Portland Home Demonstration Club and the first Primary Sunday School Superintendent of Union on Chapel General Baptist Church. Mrs. Harper was a member of the Professional Business Women Organization and Friends of the Elmer Hinton Library. She is survived by her husband, Marion Lester Oliver Harper of Portland; one daughter, Marian Denise Harper (Byron) Wilson of Portland one granddaughter, Marian Ella Victoria Wilson; cousins, Jerry and Carl Faller of VA and FLA and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service was at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005 at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Bro. Berlan Harper and Bro. Nathan Knight officiating. Internment at Restlawn Memory Gardens Pallbearers were Harold Dean Harper, William Jr. Harper, Earl Hawthorne, Thurman Harper, George Wilkerson, James Wilson, Jerry Faller and Harold Boyles. Honorary pallbearers were Miles Barnes, Anthony Mann, Mike Denning, David Simpson, Donald Harper and Daniel Hawthorne.
