Prof. Hibbett Passes Away - Former Tennessean Had Taught Many Years In This State

Nashville, May 31 - News of the death of Prof. Andrew J. Hibbett yesterday at the home of his son in Hattiesburg, Miss., was received Friday by his relatives in Nashville, his brother, Dr. Charles T. Hibbett, U. S. N., retired, and his nephews, Dr. Paul DeWitt and John H. DeWitt. Professor Hibbett was born in 1845 in Sumner County, a son of Col. John J. Hibbett, and was educated at Cumberland University. For nearly 50 years he was a teacher in Sumner County and other places, and he was well known to a large number of people, especially his old pupils in this section. In the early part of the Civil War Mr. Hibbett enlisted in a company of Confederate Cavalry, commanded by Col. Tyree in Sumner County, and while engaged in military training was taken with meningitis and was disabled during the remainder of the war. He was a member of Donelson Bivouac of Gallatin. Mr. Hibbett was a Methodist in faith and a staunch Democrat. He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Vallie H. Perry of Tampa, Fla., and a son John J. Hibbett, a leading merchant of Hattiesburg.
