Dorothy Mae KEPLEY, 75, of Portland died on Friday, December 21, 2007 at Portland Medical Center.  The Sumner County native was born on August 5, 1932 to the late Charlie and Charity Perdue.  Funeral services were held on Sunday, December 23, 2007 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Sherron Cemetery.

Barry R. BURNS Sr., 51, of Portland died on Friday, December 21, 2007 at Baptist Hospital.  The Ohio native was born on January 28, 1956 to the late Richard and Elaine Brookover Burns.  He was employed as a lead electrician for Metro Nashville government.  Funeral services were held on Monday, December 24, 2007 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Interment was in Portland Memorial Gardens.

Ralph Douglas VANATTA, 80, of Portland died on Monday, December 24, 2007 at Sumner Regional Medical Center.  The Sumner County native was born on June 26, 1927 to the late Winford and Elsie Vanatta.  He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Vanatta, and brothers Vernon Vanatta and Gerald Wayne Vanatta.  Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 27, 2007 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Steven Dale CHILDERS, 50, of Portland died on Tuesday, January 1, 2008.  The West Virginia native was born on December 7, 1957 to Lester and Joann Childers.  He was preceded in death by his father, children Ambria Childers and Steven Childers, Jr. and mother in law, Gaythelle Riley.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at Wallace Funeral Home in Barboursville, W. V.  Interment was in White Chapel.  Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Alice Rhea Mink CASH, 68, of Portland died on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at Baptist Hospital.  The Robertson County native was born on March 12, 1939 to the late William and Maffie Mink.  She was retired from Sunbeam Corporation and H. G. Hill's deli.  She was a member of Fountain Head Church of Christ.  She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Ruby Sims, and brother John Mink.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Teresa Lynn KOEHN, 25, of Portland, died on Tuesday, January 1, 2008.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at the Hendersonville Church of God.  Interment was in Hendersonville Memory Gardens.

Lewis LINK, 88, of Gallatin died on Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at Gallatin Health Care.  The Portland native was born on March 16, 1919 to the late Willie Eugene Link and Ruby Ann Legge Link.  He was a retired Greyhound Bus driver.  Her served his country in the United States Army.  Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 3, 2008 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Gloria Nadine JOHNSON, 66, of Portland died on Monday, January 7, 2007 at Highland Manor Nursing Home.  The Arkansas native was born on August 5, 1941 to the late Dewey Daniel Walker Sr. and Beryldean (Parrigan) Walker.  She was a housewife.  She was preceded in death by two brothers, Danny Walker and Rodger Dale Walker.  Visitation was held at 9 am on Wednesday, January 9, 2007 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Interment was in Old Brush Cemetery.

Marie Thomas NOLF, 47, of Portland died on Monday, January 7, 2007 at her residence.  Graveside services were held on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at Martins Chapel Church Cemetery.  Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.

Geneva E.  RUCKLE, 92, of Portland died on Sunday, January 13, 2008 at Portland Medical Center.  The Texas native was born June 1, 1915 to the late Weir Drummond and Anna Belle (Harper) Drummond.  She was a registered nurse.  Graveside services were held at Old Brush Cemetery on Monday, January 14, 2008.  A memorial service was held that evening at Highland Seventh Day Adventist Church.  Portland Funeral Chapel was in charge of all arrangements.

Bud MOORE, 74, of Portland died on Monday, January 14, 2008 at Portland Medical Center.  The Sumner County native was born July 12, 1933 to the late Tom and Essie Bell Brooks Moore.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Callis and Virginia Briggs.  Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Old Brush Cemetery.

Annie Marie GANT, 85, of Portland died on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at Sumner Regional Medical Center.  Born on April 15, 1922 to the late William Jefferson and Sue Marie Jackson Meador, Gant was a lifelong member of Portland Church of Christ.  She volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America, 4-H, and local home demonstration clubs.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cordell Gant; son, William Henry Gant; sister Mary Meador Douglas; brother, Brown Peyton Meador; daughter-in-law, Debbie Brown Gant; and brother in law, Walden Gant.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Helen Link ROATH, 84, of Springfield died on Thursday, January 10, 2008 at her residence.  The Sumner County native was born May 31, 1923 to the late Brooks and Nelle Appling Link.  She was a member of Bethel Church of Christ in Joelton and was a retired painter at Sunbeam.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Franklin Roath; a son, Joe Martin Roath, a sister, Aliene Vbbinga; and a brother, Douglas Link.  Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, January 12, 2008 in the Oakhurst Chapel of Robertson County Funeral Home.  Interment was in Jake Link Cemetery.

John David BENJAMIN, 73, of Portland died on Thursday, January 17, 2008.  The Pennsylvania native was born July 13, 1934 to the lat4e Austin and Flossie Gail Benjamin.  He was the owner of J. B. Motors and Benjamin's One Stop in Ithaca, N. Y. and Benjamin Automotive in Portland.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Winona Schoonooer, and brothers, Austin Benjamin and Levergne Benjamin.  Memorial services were held on Monday, January 21, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.

Johnnie Gillington DILLARD, 97, or Franklin, Ky. died on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Franklin Medical Center.  The Robertson County native was born November 17, 1910 to the late James and Nora Dillard.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Harold Dillard.  (He is survived by his wife, 3 daughters, and 7 sons).  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Charles M. "Tony" DEASY, 82, of Portland died on Friday, January 18, 2008 at Hendersonville Medical Center.  The Portland native was born December 25, 1925 to the late Edgar and Addie Elizabeth Grantham Deasy.  Prior to becoming an insurance agent, he served his country in the United States Army.  He was a member of Portland First Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Kerley Deasy; and sister, Thelma Bailey.  Funeral services were held on Monday, January 21, 2008 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Interment was in Old Brush Cemetery.

Bobby Joe CLUBBS, 68, of Portland died on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at Portland Medical Center.  He was born March 21, 1939 to the late William and Leona Clubbs.  Memorial services were held on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.

Joe McNELLY, 74, of Mitchellville died on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at the V. A. Medical Center in Nashville.  The Illinois native was born to the late France and Claudia Noe McNelly.  He was a member of the National Unified Service Command, where he held the rank of colonel.  He retired as a Staff Sergeant from the United States Air Force with 20 years of service.  He was also retired from Lockheed Aircraft where he was instrumental in the building of Air Force One for George Bush, Sr.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Frieta Renee.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at Gallatin Funeral Home.  Interment was in Sumner Memorial Gardens.

Linda Lee LOUDEN, 69, of Portland died on Saturday, January 26, 2008.  She was born May 31, 1938 to the late Melvin and Margie Kelly.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral home.  Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery.

Mildred Louise LAMBERTH, 79, of Beechgrove died on Sunday, January 27, 2008 at St. Thomas Hospital.  The Sumner County native was born December 25, 1929 to the late Charles and Mary Williams.  Funeral services were held at 1 pm on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment will be in Mitchellville General Baptist Church Cemetery.

Georgia Mae BROWN, 78, of Portland died on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at Sumner Regional Medical Center.  The Davidson County native was born July 17, 1929 to the late Roy and Annie Hall Livingston.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Alford Brown, and brothers, Claude Livingston, Herman Livingston, and Russell Livingston.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 2, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Halltown Cemetery.

Martin Lee THURMOND III, 51, formerly of Portland and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. died on Sunday, January 27, 2008 at Slidell Memorial Hospital in Slidell, La. after a courageous fight to overcome the effects of a serious illness.  He was the beloved son of Carleen Knowles Fowlkes and the late Martin Lee Thurmond, Jr.  He was a 1974 graduate of Portland High School where he played basketball and received many awards in football.  He worked as a construction contractor most of his life and enjoyed reading, deep-sea fishing, music and making friends.  Memorial services were held at 10 am on Saturday, February 9, 2008 at Portland First Baptist Church.

Michael Dana CLARK, Jr., 34, of Cottontown died on Sunday, February 3, 2008.  Funeral services were held at 2 pm on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in the Halltown Cemetery.

Louis James MARKSBERRY, 85, of the Spice Knob Community in Kentucky died Monday, February 4, 2008 at Owensboro Medical Health System.  The Indiana native was born September 28, 1922 to the late Luther Hensley and Annie Frances (Blythe) Marksberry.  The retired agricultural farm equipment sales manager and farmer lived on a farm in the Spice Knob Community for 61 years.  He was a member of Owensboro Christian Church and served as a past deacon and Sunday School teacher of South Hampton Baptist Church for 40 years.  He was a 58-year member and past master of the Ensor Masonic Lodge #729 F&AM, a charter member of the Owensboro Antique Car Club, a former member of the Daviess County Historical Society, and was active in the Owensboro Museum of Science and History.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Thelma Thompson, Martine Clyne and Margaret Green.  He is survived by his wife of 64 years, 3 sons, two sisters, and one brother.  Services were held on Thursday, February 7, 2008 at James H. Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro, Ky.  Burial was in Owensboro Memorial Gardens.

Eugene "Gene" WHITE, 77, of Portland died on Sunday, February 10, 2008 at Sumner Regional Medical Center. The Robertson County native was born January 30, 1931 to the late Hugh and Annetter Flatt White.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Lymon White.  Interment will be at Jake Link Cemetery.

Della Cinnie BOWEN, 103, of Portland died on Monday, February 11, 2008 at Portland Medical Center.  The Jackson County native was born January 5, 1905 to the late Floyd and Jennie White Tittle.  She was a farm lady.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe T. Bowen, and son, Joe T. Bowen.  A religious service will be held at 10 am on Thursday, February 14, 2008 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Graveside services will be held at 12:30 pm at Milton Cemetery in Milton, Tenn.

Dr. Ralph W. SIMONTON Jr., 84, of Portland died on Monday, February 11, 2008 at Portland Medical Center.  The Texas native was born December 23, 1923 to the late Ralph W. and Gertrude May Pickett Simonton.  Dr. Simonton practiced medicine in the Portland area for 54 years, retiring at the age of 76.  He was a retired member of the AMA, TMA, Sumner County Medical Society, Southern Medical Association, and the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association.  He was an avid golfer, enjoyed working his farm and his Tennessee Walking Horses.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Mary Simonton, and sister, Mary Carolyn Simonton.  Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 14, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery.

Leota Viola "GiGi" CRON, 79, of Portland died on Friday, February 15, 2008 at Sumner Regional Medical Center.  The Florida native was born May 6, 1928 to the late George and Vesta Greemore.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James Rachel Cron , and stepdaughter, Callie Smith.  Funeral services were held on Sunday, February 17, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.

J. T. MATHIAS, 93, of Portland, died on Saturday, February 9, 2008.  The Sumner County native was born November 14, 1914 to the late Carl and Lillie Mathias.  He was a longtime member of Union Chapel General Baptist Church.  Funeral services were held on Monday, February 11, 2008 at Union Chapel Church.  Interment was in Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Liz MACK, 77, of Portland died on Monday, February 18, 2008.  The Kansas native was born November 10, 1930 to the late Clarence (Skinny) and Mary (Artzer) Dennis.  She was a retired physical therapist who was devoted to rehabilitating others.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, J. D. Mack; two sisters, Barbara Jean Dennis Creek and Bertha Dennis Brown; and a brother, LeRoy Dennis.  Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 21, 2008 in the St. James Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary.  Interment was in the St. James Cemetery.

Della Effie MATHIAS, 90, of Portland, died on Thursday, February 21, 2008.  The Smith County native was born March 27, 1917.  She was a longtime member of Union Chapel General Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, J. T. Mathias.  She was the last survivor of 9 children.  Funeral services were held on Sunday, February 24, 2008 at Union Chapel Church.  Interment was in Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Pauline ENGLAND, 89, of Portland died on Thursday, February 21, 2008 at Sumner Regional Medical Center.  The Sumner County native was born May 10, 1918 to the late Fay Burton and Sudie Goostree Hobdy.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl England Sr.; sons, Billy Ray England and Dennis Fay England; and daughter in law, Emma Jean England.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Larry LAW, 75, of Portland, died on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at his residence.  The Sumner County native was born January 15, 1933 to the late William and Jane Law.  He began a lifelong career in agriculture in school, belonging to the 4-H Club, and then became involved with Tennessee Farm Bureau YF&H, The National Farm Organization, Sumner County Co-Op Board of Directors, member of Dairymen, Inc. and the Sumner County Cattlemen's Association.  Memorial services were held on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Bush's Chapel Cemetery.

Shirley Ann GLOVER, 64, of Gallatin, died on Sunday, February 24, 2008 at Trousdale Medical Center.  She was born June 18, 1943 to the late Harry and Bessie Brassell.  Funeral service will be held at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment will be at Sulphur Fork Church Cemetery.

Avery T. REECER, 71, of Portland died on Friday, February 29, 2008 at Baptist Hospital.  He was born June 15, 1936 to the late Fred and Nancy Becky Jane Smith Reecer.  He was an avid Portland Panther fan, a member of the Masonic Lodge #326 F & AM, and the Al Menah Temple Shrine.  He was a member of the Mt. Moriah General Baptist Church.  He also served his country in the United States Army.  Funeral services were held on Monday, March 3, 2008 at Portland First Baptist Church.  Interment was in Portland Memorial Gardens where he received full military rites.

Larry BUSCH, 43, of Portland, died on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at Portland Medical Center.  The Davidson County native was born October 2, 1964.  Memorial services were held on Friday, February 29, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.

George David HAMILTON Jr., 65, of Gallatin died on Sunday, March 2, 2008.  He was preceded in death by his parents, George David Hamilton Sr. and Margaret Bruce Baker Hamilton.  Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 from the chapel of Family Heritage Funeral Home.  Burial was in Bush's Chapel Cemetery.

Vernon Taylor KING, 80, of Portland died on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at The Medical Center in Bowling Green, Ky.  The Kentucky native was the son of the late Melville King and Lola Ruth Lamberth King.  He was a farmer and a veteran of the United States Army.  He was a member of the Round Pond Presbyterian Church.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at Booker-Gilbert Funeral Home in Franklin, Ky.  Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin, Ky.

Bertha J. McELHOES, 82, of Cottontown died on Monday, March 10, 2008 at Caring Hearts.  The Pennsylvania native was born May 15, 1925 to the late George D. Robinson and Alice Schlosser Robinson.  She was a bookkeeper and a member of Portland First Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. McElhoes, and a brother, Robert Robinson.  Memorial services were held on Thursday, March 13, 2008 at Portland First Baptist Church.

Helen WILKINSON, 90, of Portland died on Monday, March 10, 2008 at her residence.  The Sumner County native was born August 16, 1917 to the late Jess and Eunice Brown.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold H. Wilkinson, and sister Gaynell Austin.  Funeral services were held on Friday, March 14 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Portland Memorial Gardens.

Margaret "Dee" O. DENNING, 75, of White House died on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at Skyline Hospice-Madison Campus.  The Robertson County native was born September 7, 1932 to the late Virgil and Vollie Brown Long.  She was employed as a manager of an apartment complex in White House.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at Austin & Bell Funeral Home in White House.  Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

William Carrol (Bill) COVINGTON, 81, of Robertson County died on Friday, March 14, 2008 at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville.  He was born September 27, 1926 to the late Hubbard Ford and Viola Warren Covington.  He was an honored Korean War veteran, former road superintendent for Robertson County, and worked for the State of Tennessee at Welcome Center, and was on the Board of Directors for The Farmers Bank for 15 years.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Starks Covington; parents; sister, Elizabeth Ann Covington; and brother John Warren Covington.  Funeral services were held on Monday, March 17, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Robertson County.

Steven Lynn THURMAN, 50, of Franklin, Ky. died on Sunday, March 16, 2008 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville.  The Franklin, Ky. native was the son of the late Roy Lee Thurman and Betty Hatfield Thurman of Springfield, Tenn., who survives.  He was a farmer and service manager of Sumner County Tractor.  He was a member of the Franklin First United Methodist Church.  Burial will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin, Ky.

Annie Jewell JONES, 89, of Portland died on Sunday, March 23, 2008 at her residence.  The Sumner County native was born November 26, 1918 to the late William Henry and Bertha Joanna Freeland.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Jones and brother Oscar Freeland.  Funeral services were held at 1 pm on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home with interment at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Michael V. RAY, 58, of Portland died on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at his residence.  The Sumner County native was born November 14, 1949 to the late Paul and Bessie Ray.  He was retired from the U. S. Army.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Gene Ray.  Funeral services were held on Monday, March 31, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Pharris Cemetery in Gainsboro.

James Monroe BROWN, 84, of Franklin, Ky. died on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at The Medical Center of Bowling Green, Ky.  Brown was born June 5, 1923 to the late Lee and Fannie Hardison Brown.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery.

Lena Arbragine COLLINS, 102, of Maryland died on Monday, March 24, 2008 at Morningside House of St. Charles, Maryland.  Mrs. Collins was born July 18, 1905 in Knoxville, the daughter of the Rev. William A. and Mary Witt Masterson.  She and her sister, Clara, both attended Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City.  In her senior year, she enrolled in a required physics course which happened to be taught by Professor Samuel C. Collins, who eventually became her husband.  (This is a long obit, and if anyone wishes more information, email me. She did not reside in Sumner County. *jb)

Wallace Wesley FINCH, Jr., 80, of Portland died on Wednesday, April 2, 2008.  The Sumner County native was born October 5, 1927 to the late Wallace Wesley and Mildred Finch.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 5, 2008 at White House General Baptist Church.  Interment was in Old Brush Cemetery.  Austin and Bell Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.

Patsy Juanita VAUGHN, 60, of Portland died on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at her residence.  The Sumner County native was born April 10, 1947 to the late Carlin and Estelle Vaughn.  She was preceded in death by a sister, Etta Jane Newman, and brothers, Johnny Vaughn and Junior Vaughn.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 5, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Old Brush Cemetery.

"Maggie" HARWOOD, 85, of Indianapolis, died on Saturday, April 26, 2008.  The Fountain Head native was born June 4, 1922 to the late Abner Branchford and Bertha Mae Bennett Wilson.  She worked for Western Electric where she was a member of the Pioneer Club.  She was a member of the Indianapolis Baptist Temple since 1955.  She was preceded in death by her daughter, Peggy Ann Woodall; son, Jerry Woodall; son-in-law, Larry Meguiar, and grandson, Dustin Fountain.  Funeral services will be held at Noon on Friday, May 2, 2008 in Little and Sons Stop 11 Road Chapel in Indianapolis, Ind. Marion Lester Oliver Harper, 83, of Portland died Thursday, May 15, 2008 at Sumner Regional Medical Center.  The Sumner County native was born August 13, 1924 to the late Marion Mitchell Harper and Eva Marie Haase.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Cora Mae Hines Harper.  He was a veteran and served his country during World War II.  He attended the Vocational Agricultural School for veterans after the war and was a member of Future Farmers of America.  For many years, Mr. Harper participated in the national Farming Organizations and Sons of the American Revolution.  He was a member of Union Chapel General Baptist Church.  Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 18, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Internment was in Restlawn Memory Gardens.

J. C. MAHAFFEY, 86, of Chesnee, S. C. died on Wednesday, June 4, 2008.  The Spartanburg County native was the husband of the late Pearl Ruth Mahaffey and the son of the late Christopher Columbus and Edith Cole Mahaffey.  He was a member of Providence Wesleyan Church and was the last surviving member of his family.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at Eggers Funeral Home of Chesnee, S. C.

James William DYE, 87, of Portland died on Wednesday, June 4, 2008.  He was born in Fountainhead on February 26, 1921 to the late James W. Dye Jr. and Clara Caudill Dye.  He was a graduate of Mississippi State University and served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.  He taught high school vocational agriculture in Pendleton, Ind.  He worked for 31 years for the U. S. Department of Agriculture as a soil scientist.  Following his retirement in 1976, he continued a career as a farmer and a producer of registered Black Angus beef cattle.  He was a member of the Portland Church of Christ.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Joe S. Dye, and a sister, Mary Sue Dye Keller.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Mabel Centers SHORT, 89, of Portland died on Sunday, June 29, 2008.  The Pineville Ky. native was born March 3, 1919 to the late Nathan and Amanda Myrtle Centers.  She worked 27 years at the Federal Plant at Oak Ridge and was a member of Edgemore Baptist Church near Clinton.  After leaving that area, she became a member of Hermitage United Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold B. Short; sister, Carrie Wilson; and granddaughter, Lisa Ray Vaughan.  A service celebrating Mabel's life will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at Hermitage UMC, Hermitage, Tenn.

Violet Burysek ASHLOCK, 79, of San Francisco, Calif. died on Saturday, May 17, 2008.  The Robertson County native was born to the late Joe Burysek and Kristy Hradek Burysek.  She was preceded in death by three sisters, Rose Nesvarba, Alice Walker and Mildred Hendricks; and three brothers, Willie Burysek, Jerry Burysek, and Miles Burysek.  Graveside services were held on Saturday, July 12, 2008 at Immanuel Bohemian Cemetery.  Crafton Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.

Dorothy Allen KERLEY, 87, of Portland died on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at Highland Manor Nursing Home.  The Sumner County native was born April 13, 1921 to the late John Vernon Kerley an Minnie Jane Tibbs Kerley.  A graduate of Sumner County High School (Portland High School), she attended Carson Newman College until World War II and then transferred to Peabody College in Nashville, where she graduated with a B.S. and M. A. in Art.  She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church.  She spent most of her life working alongside her father and sisters at J. E. Kerley & Sons, Inc. in Portland, which was founded by her grandfather, J. E. Kerley in 1902.  She served as Vice President of the corporation.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Carolyn Kerley Deasy.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 2, 2008 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Margaret McGraw DUNHAM VAUGHN, 90, of Portland.  Born in Logan Township, Altoona, Pa., to Margaret Ella Lynn and George Irwin McGraw on Jan. 11, 1918.  Graduated from Altoona High School in 1936 and attended Washington Missionary College (Columbia Union College).  She married Gerald Oscar Dunham on July 6, 1937.  They had two children.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Gerald; father and mother, three brothers, George, Milton and Edward; two sisters Laura Taggart of Philadelphia, Pa. and Katherine (infant).  She served as Dean of Women at Highland Academy 1952 - 1953 in Portland.  Gerald and Margaret Dunham served three years in the Caribbean Union of Seventh-day Adventist, Mr. Dunham as Treasurer in Barbados and auditor of the Caribbean Union in Trinidad and later treasurer of Highland Academy.  In 2000 she married Russell Vaughn, formerly of Altoona, Pa., who also preceded her in death.  Funeral service was held on Friday, Sept. 12, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Old Brush Cemetery.

Liddie Larue JONES, 85, of Portland, died on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008.  The Sumner County native was born Dec. 22, 1922, to the late Archie C. and Mattie Webb.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Ernest Jones.  Funeral services were held on Sunday, Oct. 5, at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.

Donald Lee FOWLER, 65, of Franklin, Ky., died on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008 at the Medical Center in Bowling Green, Ky.  A native of Terre Haute, Ind., he was the son of the late Thomas Fowler and Mollie Chism Fowler.  He had worked part time at Advanced Auto in Portland and retired from Unipress in Portland.  He served in the National Guard from 1963 to 1969.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Crafton Funeral Home.  Military rites were conducted by the Simpson County Honor Guard.

C. H. CROSSLAND, Sr., 93, of Woodbury died on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008 at the VA Nursing Home in Murfreesboro.  He was the son of the late W. E. and Ophelia Crossland.  He was the former pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church in Portland for 25 years.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Louise Crossland, a sister and four brothers.  Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 10, Phillips-Robinson Funeral Home.  Interment was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Madison.

Opal Reed FREEMAN, 86, of Portland died on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008.  The Macon County native was born Feb. 23, 1922, to the late W. O. Freeman and Allean Carter Freeman.  She was a schoolteacher at Buck Lodge and Hollis Chapel and was later employed with the United States Civil Service, serving over 40 years in the Federal Housing Administration in Memphis, the War Department in Washington, D. C., and the Arnold Engineering Development Center in Tullahoma.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Jewel Freeman McWhirter, and her brother, Charles Freeman.  Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 13, at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.

Virgil Wallace KITCHENS, 76, of Chicago, Ill., formerly of Franklin, Ky., died on Monday, Oct. 6, 2008.  The Simpson County native was the son of the late Clarence virgil Kitchens and Ollie P. Dorothy W. PERDUE, 85, of Bucyrus, Ohio, died on Sunday, Nov. 2008, at Bucyrus Community Hospital.  The Sumner County native was born Feb. 15, 1923, to the late Charlie H. and Hazel (Hunter) Freeman.  She was married to Grady Perdue, who preceded her in death on Nov. 13, 2002.  In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by daughter Carolyn Crum; sister Shirley; and brother James.  Mrs. Perdue assisted her husband in the roofing business for over 50 years.  She lived most of her life in Bucyrus and was a member of the Full Gospel Lighthouse Pentecostal Church of God for over 60 years.  Mrs. Perdue enjoyed gardening and flowers.  Funeral services were held on Friday in the Full Gospel Lighthouse Pentecostal Church of God.  Burial was in the Brokensword Cemetery.

Dr. Alton Thomas EMBRY, 69, of Franklin, Ky., died on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008 at Alive Hospice Skyline, Madison.  Dr. Embry died after a brief illness battle with lung cancer.  The Butler County, Ky. native was the son of the late Thomas Embry and Ruby Embry.  He was owner and operator of Embry Chiropractic Center in Franklin for 42 years.  He was a veteran of the United States Army Reserves.

Haroldine (Dean) Alcott TANDY, 78, of Portland died on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008.  The Michigan resident was born June 12, 1930, to the late dOrothy Alcott Calhoun and Charles Calhoun.  She was retired in 1978 as a Local Test Foreman from the C & P Telephone Company after working 31 years.  She volunteered at the Friends of the Elmer Hinton Memorial Library and was president from 1983 to 1987.  She was also a volunteer for the Literacy Council and served as president from 1988 to 1992.  In addition, she was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and served as a secretary in the Gallatin branch.  She was active in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Franklin, Ky.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Douglas Tandy, Jr.  A rosary service was held on Thursday, Dec. 4, at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Memorial service was held on Friday, Dec. 5, at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Franklin.  Burial was in Grandlawn Cemetery in Michigan.

Hazel F. Manning PORTER was born July 2, 1926, to Lola and Barney Forbis in Portland, Tenn.  She departed this life into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at the age of 82.  Hazel graduated from Sumner County High School in 1944.  She worked for a brief time in Nashville and then returned to work at the Farmers Bank in Portland.  Most of her life was dedicated to children.  She began the first kindergarten at First Baptist Church in the mid-50's.  She also worked as a teacher's aide at Clyde Riggs Elementary and then returned as the director of First Baptist Daycare where she worked until she retired.  She was married to William Alvin Manning, who passed away in 1975.  She was preceded in death by her son, Doyle Manning, who passed away at the age of 25 from complications of Hodgkin's Disease.  She met her second husband Dennis Porter while square dancing with the Strawberry Squares.  They married in 1984 and he passed away 15 years later.  She had one brother, Larry, who passed away at the age of 32 from a massive heart attack.  Religious services were held on Friday, Dec. 5 at Portland First Baptist Church.  Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Maggie Lee REDFEARIN, 78, of Portland died on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at Portland Medical Center.  The Robertson County native was born July 15, 1930, to the late Charlie and Laura Scruggs Spain.  She was a retired seamstress from Portland Manufacturing and was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fort Redfearin.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 6, at Milldale Chapel.  Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Kevin Ray EDEN, 52, of Portland died on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, at Portland Medical Center.  The Sumner County native was born March 15, 1956, to Fredie and Launa Eden.  He worked for Kirby Building Systems for 35 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Eden.  Funeral services were held on Sunday, Dec. 7, at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Groves Cemetery.

Brian D. DENNING, 36, of Gallatin died on Monday, Dec. 8, 2008.  Born Dec. 4, 1972, in Nashville, Denning was a Deputy Sheriff with the Sumner County Sheriff's Office and was a member of the 18th Judicial Drug Task Force.  He also loved working with kids at Children's Tree House Ministry at Long Hollow Baptist Church in Hendersonville.  He enjoyed hunting with his friends and his passion was the love of his job and the fight to keep drugs off the street.  He was also formerly enlisted in the United States Air Force.  Funeral services were held on Thursday, Dec. 11, at Long Hollow Baptist Church in Hendersonville.  Burial was in Gallatin Memorial Park at Crestview.

Annette Henderson HALL, 55, of Portland died on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at Portland Medical Center.  The Robertson County native was born April 5, 1953, to the late Samuel and Ethel Henderson.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her nephew, Cory Tate.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 13 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Portland Memorial Gardens.

Irene "Rene" Victoria Combs MARLEY, 84, died on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008 while surrounded by her family.  Marley was a homemaker and a member of The First Wesleyan Church in Burlington, NC.  She volunteered her time with The Alamance County Meals on Wheels program.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Thomas Marley, Sr.; parents John Roby and Effie McCreary Combs; and brothers James and Elmer Combs.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel in Burlington, NC.  Burial was in Alamance Memorial Park.

Sue Ellen MORGAN, 53, of Portland died on Monday, Dec. 8, 2008 at Hendersonville Medical Center.  The Greenbrier native was born Nov. 15, 1955, to the late Wallace and Helen Wade Morgan.  She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Darlene Choate.  Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008 at Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Greenbrier.  Burial was in Greenbrier Cemetery.

Selma Christine NIXON, 87, of Portland died on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008 at Portland Medical Center.  The Sumner County native was born March 16, 1921 to the late Charlie an Mattie Durham.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James D. Nixon and grandson, Kenneth E. Nixon.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment was in Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

Betty Ann Groves SPIVEY, 75, of Portland died on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008 at her residence.  The Robertson County native was the daughter of the late Hershel Bradley Groves and Clara Earline Stout Groves.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 13 at Crafton Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was in Groves Cemetery in Robertson County.

Verona Mai HARPER, age 89, of Springfield, Tenn., formerly of Portland, passed away December 17, 2008, at her home. She was born in Sumner County on June 25, 1919, to the late Vernon and Stella Mai Robertson.  She was a longtime member of McKendree Memorial United Methodist Church.  Funeral services were at 11 a.m., Saturday, December 20, 2008, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery.

James Morris “Butch” CORNELIUS, age 67, of Portland, passed away December 22, 2008, at his home. He was born in London, Ky., on August 13, 1941, to the late Eldon and Doris Cornelius. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Debra Coots, and brother, Jerry Cornelius. He retired as co-owner of the Portland Prescription Shop.  Funeral service will be 1 pm Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment will be at Old Brush Cemetery.

Minnie Lucille TOMLINSON, age 83, of Portland, passed away December 19, 2008. She was born in Sumner County on March 1, 1925, to the late John and Eva Mae Ragland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey Allen Tomlinson.  Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Sunday, December 19, 2008, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment at Halltown Cemetery.

Orvil Houston "Duke" FREEDLE, 89, of Portland died on Monday, Dec. 22, 2008 at NorthCrest Medical Center.  The Robertson County native was born July 26, 1919, to the late Will and Flora Freedle.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Ernest Vardell "Dick" Freedle, Edward Ward Carmack "Jack" Freedle, James Dalton "Jim" Freedle, and sisters Jewell Freedle Hobdy, Willie Shelton, Serena Bell Leverette, and Georgia Eckhart.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at Union Chapel General Baptist Church.  Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Dustin Wade PERRY, 23, of Franklin, Ky. died on Friday, Dec. 26, 2008 at his home.  The Warren County, Ky. native was the son of Wade Perry and Cindy Akins Perry.  He was an employee of Perry & Son Construction.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008 at Crafton Funeral Home in Franklin, Ky.  Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Cottontown.
