1899 Census Tidbits

  • September 8, 1899: The Executive Order is issued by the United States for the taking of the census.
  • Execution of such work was undertaken by native Puerto Ricans.
  • November 6, 1899: The island is divided into 917 Enumeration Districts and the appointments of the enumerators is finished.
  • November 10, 1899: The enumeration commences.
  • The gathering of information in the rural areas was made less than ideal by Hurricane San Ciriaco which crossed the island on August 8th. It was made worse, immediately afterwards, by 28 days of rain. Despite these natural disasters, the enumeration was completed.
  • December 20, 1899: The enumeration is completed.
  • For the first time, in Puerto Rico, women were given public employment. Sixty-two women were hired as enumerators.
