My 6Great-GrandFather: William (De Jeanne) JAYNE, 1618-1714, age 96yrs

In the absence of absolute proof, circumstantial evidence, both legally and genealogically, has been allowed in the following conclusions and will be conceded that when any other proof of the opposite is provided, which is logical and reasonable and not opposed by any evidence ...Paul R. Sarrett. Jr. (1981)

The various record and dictionaries show the surname spelling of the:
JAYNE name as JAYNES, JAYNOR, JAYNNES, and JEANNES

This JAYNE family line was originally "de Jeanne" and was of NORMAN-FRENCH origin. During the time of the persecution of the French HUGUENOTS which reached its height at the Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve., many of the first families of France who were of the Protestant faith had to flee France to escape this persecution which took awful forms of torture and death. The Huguenots were not of a tough and sturdy peasant stock. They were not the type of the natural pioneer. Love of adventure was foreign to their minds. They represented the very best of French civilization of their day, in blood and intellect and culture. Their farmers and craftmens were the best in Europe. HUGUENOTS
French Protestants in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The origin of the word is obscure. It may have been a local nickname given to the Protestants of Tours, who were believed to meet nightly near the gate of the mythical King Huguet, or Hugon a derivation from the German EIDENOSSEN, "Confederates," is also possible. Click on Redball for More Info.<--- [REF:# 1.]

The HUGUENOTS fled to England as the nearest Protest country and the de Jeanne Family appears to have been one among many thousands who escaped the persecution which deprived them their religious liberty. The de Jeanne Family on account of the prominence they attained in France, were granted English arms, which was not uncommon. Click on Redball for More Info.<--- [REF:# 1.]

Their are two recognized COAT OF ARMS for the JAYNE Family. In both cases, the JAYNE Coat of Arms, show the lion rampant, in the arms, which was given to one while in the command and won the battle. The escallops indicate Crusade pilgrimages. The ducal crown was given to one who held command under the sovereign Duke of the French Confederation. ..prs

The JAYNE'S can trace their ancestry to "Guido de Jeanne," who has been reported to have been a General in the French Confederation of the year 1100. He accompanied HENRY ANJOU to England in 1154, for his coronation as HENRY the III, King of England. King HENRY, III presented "Guido de Jeane" with the Manor of Kirtland, which became the seat of the "de Jeanee Family" of England. Click on Redball for More Info.<--- [REF:#21 pg1.1 ]

He grew up in Bristol and entered Oxford Univeristy, and later at the age of 21 years, about 1639 he was expelled under the Decree of uniformity, which required all students to subscribe to all articles of the Westminster creed of the established Church. William de Jeanne became a Puritan Minister and later was a Chaplain in CROMWELL'S Army. It is believed that William de Jeanne lived at Lewellen on the East Coast of Wales for a time.
After the restoration of King CHARLES II, William, de JEANNE fought safety in flight. He changed his name to "JAYNE" and secured passage on a sailing vessel bound for America (Dates and name of Ship, Unknown. ..prs) It's been reported, he landed at New Haven, Connecticut, where an Uncle William de Jeanne (for whom he was named) was located, but it is not known how long he remained at New Haven. He was on Long Island prior to 1672.
According to the best available information our William (de Jeanne) JAYNE was married four times, once in England and three times in America. He was a widower for the first time at the age of 54 years, and with grown sons whom he left in England when he fled to America. No record found of his First wife or children! PERKINS is listed as Williams' first wife. I know nothing about her, or whether any of William's children are from her. Also, one source lists his second wife as Annie Jennings, and third wife as Mehitabel Jenkins.
My first source only listed Anna Biggs. It is possible that Anna Biggs and Annie Jennings are the same person and that Anna first marriage was to either a 'Biggs' or a 'Jennings'. I do not know which is her maiden name. To complicate matters, I also show Williams' daughter Anna married to Daniel Brewster, who I also show with a second wife named "Anna Biggs"!! I am not sure what is correct here, so I will show Anna Biggs as an additional wife to both William Jayne and Daniel Brewster.
Much of the information I have on William and his children comes from a hand-written paper that shows as it's source:
Jayne Family of L.I. by Edward H. Jayne 1926; Am. Gen. vol 13, p.75, 163
Neutrals of 1775 by Lester G. Osborne, Long Island Forum, Oct '61, p. 221

This source says that William married Mehitabel in 1694; another source says they married 25 Aug 1683. I believe the 1694 date is the correct date, and I will use that year. Maybe the second source was a mistake, and the real date of marriage is 25 Aug 1693???

The first records found of William (de Jeanne) JAYNE, age 54 is in a letter responding to a letter of the 14th of Nov. 1672 from the then Governor FRAN LOVELACE to the Long Island Justice of the Peace; regarding the famous Jennings vs John Cooper dispute; where as William Jeanns prepared a Disposition on the accusation of John Cooper, to wit: Click on Redball for More Info.<--- REF:#4.]
