Lumpkin Co., GA.
was created in 1832,
from [284.87 Sq.Miles] the Cherokee Nation Lands & the larger <---
Habersham Co. The County Seat is <---
Dahlonega, GA. 30533. The Dahlonega originally spelled "Da-lo-ni-ge-i" means Yellow or Gold.
In 1828 Dahlonega, Cherokee Indian Teritory, was the site of the first major gold rush in the United States, but was located
in Cherokee Nation, East so the U.S. had to steal more of Indian lands and the <---
1830 Indian Removal Act was born.
All the gold mines were illegally developed in the area. Miners coming illegally into the Cherokee Nation as outlined in the treaty between the
Federal Government and the Cherokee Nation in <---
The Treaty of Washington 1819 to the area came into conflict with the Cherokee Nation, whose territory they were trespassing on.
The Whites raised political pressure against the Cherokee because they wanted to get the gold. The Federal Government forced the Native Americans west of the Mississippi River
to Oklahoma on the <---
"Trail of Tears" during Indian Removal. Dahlonega was founded two years before the
<---
Treaty of New Echota 1835, which made its founding a violation of The
<---
Treaty of Washington of 1819.
Gold was discovered in the county near Auraria in the 1830s, and the U.S. government briefly had a
mint in Dahlonega as a result until 1860. Gold from the county was later used on the roof of the
Georgia State Capitol.
