The 1856 date is moreto be accurate, based on John T. sisters Louisa J. (Smith) BURKE' s obituary states "We relocated to Davenport, Scott County, Iowa at an early age". The 1856 to 1876, he would have spent his child hood in Davenport, Iowa. Later when he married (1876) he relocated to Geneseo Township, Henry County, Illinois. ...prsjr

My father had in his posesion this writer's Great-Grandmother Anna S. (McLAUGHLIN) SMITH's prayer book, and a "Prayer Card" was found on page 487, (Litanies)
"Pray for the soul of:
Sister Mary PETRINA
Convent of Mercy, Kansas City, Mo.
Who departed this life Feb. 25, 1909
In the 30th year of her age and 11th of her Religlous Life.
On page 257 (Prayers for the Faithful Departed) was a card for:
IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John C. BERMINGHAM
Born April 20, 1854
Died March 23, 1926

This writer has in his possession Great-Grandmother's tattered and torn prayer book "WITH GOD" embosed in gold on the front, "A Book of Prayers and Reflections", by Rev. F. E. LASANCE. Copyright June 07, 1911 by The Benziger Brothers., Printers to the Holy Apostolic See, New York, Cincinnati, Chicago.
There is a handwritten inscription inside the front cover:
Mrs. Anna SMITH
3021 BELLEFONTAINE, KANSAS CITY, Mo.
Phone: LINWOOD 5570

There is no entries of births, marriages, or deaths, but there are various newspaper clippings of poems and verses, that apparently impressed Anna S. (McLAUGHLIN) SMITH. On the inside back cover hand written in ink list:
"Rev. CONELIUS J. DREW, 142 East 29th. St. New York City"

GREAT-GRANDMOTHER'S PRAYER BOOK
By Paul R. Sarrett, Jr.
To One Person It Is A Cold Thing Of No Value Whatsoever To Another It Seems Warm And Close, Beyond Intrinsic Value. Why?

Because when I see this little book I see it in the hands of my dear Great-Grandmother. I see her reading from it by the light of a kerosene lamp on the kitchen table. I see her opening it and closing it at church every Sunday, every month.
I see her holding it in her folded hands at the closing prayer of every sermon. I see it lose its cover and I see my Great-Grandmother tenderly try to glue it on again.

Many years have passed since my Great-Grandmother closed this little book for the last time, but to me it is a precious thing of warmth "between Me and Thee" that only the heart can know.
