[The following is from [REF:#1.6, Pages 79 & 80]
Reverend Robert Smith Atchley was buried at Red Bank, near
Sevierville. The epitaph inscribed on his tomb is: "Blessed Are the Dead
Which Die in the Lord." He was a member of Mountain Star Lodge No.
197, A.Y.M., Sevierville.

Susan Watson Atchley was born April 7, 1840. She died April 27,
1900. She was a daughter of John Watson and Polly Connor Watson.
The following notes concerning Reverend Atchley were contributed
by his grandchildren, Elmina Elizabeth Graham and Robert Atchley
Spence:

"His library, now (1965) in possession of one of his grandsons,
has in it a number of Greek and Hebrew books. The markings by his hand in
these books plainly indicate his familiarity with the contents, although
there is no record of his having attended college or a seminary. His
nephew, W. D. Atchley, Esq., tells me that his preacher uncle had a
working knowledge of Greek. (From Sketch of Pioneer Baptist Preach-
ers, by J. J. Burnett, D.D.)

During his ministry he was pastor of Alder Branch, of Providence,
of Bethel, of Red Bank, and of Bonner churches. He had good gifts and
was laboriously in the ministry which was carried on mostly in Blount
and Sevier counties.

As a churchman, he was a strong Baptist, and he became a leading
enthusiast for the Missionary church when it was organized. In referring
to his grandfather, Robert Atchley Spence stated "he had planned
at one time to prepare himself for a foreign field of church work, and I
remember a much marked and studied New Testament in the language
of an African tribe."

For several years, beginning with 1847, Robert Smith Atchley was a
messenger or delegate from the Alder Branch church to the Tennessee
Baptist Association. His name appears on. the minutes a number of
times. He was also an active and eflective worker, both in East TN.
and in Sevier associations when those bodies were organized.

He preached his last sermon at Shady Grove, on Birch Creek, about
eleven miles above Sevierville. He served the ministry without salary,
supporting his family by means of his and his wife's estates. His heart
was always burdened for the people in distress, and for the "lost sheep."
Only a few hours before his passing, with seeming supernatural
strength, he sang feelingly that beautiful song, "The Ninety and Nine."

Elder Atchley is described as tall, dark eyed, always wearing a grave,
kind expression. He was thoughtful and studious. He had a mild temper,
and was small in his own estimation, faithful in filling his appointments,
and was a power in the community in which he lived.

Robert S. Atchley was too old for service in the Civil War.
He was, however, a strong sympathizer with the Union Army, and
emphatically denounced secession from his pulpit. During the war,
a Confederate patrol passed through the community, confiscating men
and military supplies. Finding the preacher plowing corn in a field
some distance from the house, they took possession of his horse, and
took Robert S. Atchley's watch and other personal property, riding
away without even a word of protest from their victim. But Mrs.
Susan (WATSON) Atchley was not so easily robbed. Upon seeing the
men passing the house with their only remaining horse,
she hastened to stop them and to remonstrate with them. So forcible
and effective were her efforts that when Mr. Atchley returned home in
the evening he found "Old Selome" safe in his stall!

Mrs.Susan (WATSON) Atchley was a devout Christian and gave
her preacher husband effective help in his work. She was a special
friend in time of sickness; and, in those days when doctors were scarce,
she was called on from far and near to advise for home remedies and other
needs.
