As a young man, Isham SURRATT, the son of Patrick and Lucretia (Smith) SURRATT, was mustered into the Army during the Civil War (1862) he was in Company F, 29th Virginia Regiment and was stationed in Eastern North Carolina. He endured many hardships during that time because of the scarcity of food, lack of warm clothing, and lack of shoes with adequate soles to protect his feet from long marches. He suffered from fever and was captured and imprisoned, but later was released. He was sent to an army station in St. Paul, Minn., where he was assigned to guard duty at the trial of three Indians "Raven Feather", "Medicine Bottle", and "LittleSix" who were accused of murdering the pupils and teacher of an area school. They were found guilty and executed for the crime.
When he returned from service, Isham SURRATT married Eva Susan MARSHALL, daughter of Simon Granser Marshall, Jr. & Polly Ann (Montgomery) MARSHALL of Floyd Co..
In the early 1900's the SURRATTS moved from Delton, VA. where they operated a gist mill to Sylvatus (below Eagle Falls) see Photo, Page 54 in first edition of "Sylvatus: A History"

 CONFEDERATE VIRGINIA TROOPS (Confederate States of America, CSA)
 The 29th Infantry Regiment was authorized in November, 1861, and was to contain seven companies under Colonel A.C. Moore and three companies at Pound Gap. However, this organization never took place. Moore's five companies from Abingdon and companies raised in the spring of 1862 evidently made up the nine-company regiment. It was assigned to the Valley District, Department of Northern Virginia, then moved to Kentucky where it was engaged at Middle Creek. Later it saw action in Western Virginia and for a time served in North Carolina under General French.
 In March, 1863, it totalled 732 men. Attached to General Corse's Brigade the unit participated in Longstreet's Suffolk Expedition and during the Gettysburg Campaign was on detached duty in Tennessee and North Carolina. In the spring of 1864 it returned to Virginia and took its place in the Petersburg trenches north and south of the James River and ended the war at Appomattox. Many were lost at Sayler's Creek, and only 1 officer and 27 men surrendered on April 9, 1865.
 The field officers were Colonels James Giles and Alfred C. Moore; Lieutenant Colonels Alexander Haynes, William Leigh, and Edwin R. Smith; and Majors Ebenezer Bruster, William R.B. Horne, and Isaac White.

 Biography of Alfred P. SURATT:
      Alfred P. SURRATT was born in Carroll County, September 27, 1867, a son of Isham and Eva Susan (Marshall) SURRATT. He married Mary Ellen OGLE August 1, 1888. She was bom in Carroll County July 14,1868, a daughter of Thomas and Dcida Jane (White) OGLE. Between the late 1880's and early 1920's, while they lived at Littlevine, Mr. SURRATT, worked at several trades. In addition to fanning, he had a blacksmith shop, a saw mill, and operated a grist mill, (powered by a "galloway gas engine.") He repaired steam engines, steam tractors and saw mills.
As a wheel wright and wood worker, he made and repaired wagons, buggies, carriages and made coffins. His wife usually helped him line the coffins.
Mr. SURRATT also pulled teeth for people through-out the country. People often came to his home during the night with a toothache, and the tooth would have to be pulled by "oil lamp" light, with tooth pullers he made himself. (No charge was ever made for these services).
In the early 1920's. Mr. and Mrs. SURRATT moved to Sylvatus, where he built and ran a garage under the name of "A. P. SURRATT and Sons." In addition to running the garage, blacksmith shop and making coffins, he continued some of the other trades practiced at Littlevine.
At Sylvatus, he started making furniture, doing beautifully designed inlay work on many of these items. Some of the walking and folding canes, he carved with latticed pistol grips. As a gunsmith, he made gun stocks and repaired guns. During the late 1930*s, he made a few replicas of "old time" larger wagons.
As "souvenirs", for members of his family, Mr.SURRATT made miniature cedar chests and other small items; also carved wooden miniature animals, mostly "deers'and horses." These items were excellent examples of "Primitive Art."
They were a kind and understanding father and mother to their 12 childccn, greatly loved and admired by their 34 grandchildren and their many great-grandchildren.
Four of their children arc living;
Ruth Gray, who is 94yrs; Naomi Owen, Manota Belcher Buford SURRATT, all in their 80's.
Mr. and Mrs. SURRATT lived out their lives at their home in Sylvatus, in the house set back a little distance behind his garage building. This house is still standing and from the outside, looks much as it did then. A larger "garage and apartment building" was later built by his son, J.B. SURRATT, replacing the old garage building (located near the Sylvatus Ruritan Club building).
Alfred P. SURRATT died August 15,1953, at the age of 85 years, 11 months. Mary Ellen SURRATT, his wife, died September 30, 1954, at the age of 86 years, 2 months. They were buried at the "Ogle Cemetery" at Littlevine.
