DISASTER  AT  THE  BOTTOMS  CEMETERY
or:  BE CAREFUL, YOU MIGHT GET MORE THAN YOU ASKED FOR.

As of:  21 December 2004

It's hard to believe but it's been close to a year since we've done much work in the cemetery.  I was surprised when I heard that the Church had gotten involved and even more surprised when I heard they asked the local utility company to clear out the remaining brush.  Then, when I heard that the Utility was using a tractor with a front loader to do the job, I was fearful that they were working the area we had previously cleared so I went down to see how bad it really was.  As I approached the cemetery, I was pleased to see that the brush hadn't grown up as I had feared --  it appears that the Church is doing a good job of keeping the previously cleared area clean and the tractor hadn't worked that area.  That was a tremendous relief.  The rest, however, is a disaster.

These first couple of shots show the entry and the part of the cemetery in which we've been working.  the guys have done a nice job of keeping it cleaned out.

Back there to the left, however, the destruction was evident - and complete.  The local Utility company's 'bull-in-a-china-shop' approach to clearing a cemetery didn't leave any trace of stones or grave sites.  If there are burials in that area, they will be difficult to find and virtually impossible to identify.

Lesson?

Don't invite your local utility company to an archaeological dig.
That clearly isn't their specialty.
