Pelly-Goose Creek Oil Field
Causeway Road
Baytown, TX
Due west of the end of the extension of Lee Drive
south of Old Highway 146 (labeled Causeway in the Key Map) about 1/4
of a mile in the heart of the Pelly-Goose Creek Oil Field surrounded
by a four-foot high concrete wall.
Through the gate and about
a quarter mile down on the left lies the
Gaillard-Mitchell Cemetery behind its low, fortress-like walls.
A stone marking the service
Thomas B. Gaillard, a CSA soldier, stands lonely
sentinal duty outside of and at the east wall of the cemetery while
his tombstone marks his resting place inside.
T.B. was the father of
John Gaillard, the man who discovered
oil (1903) in the area that became the
Goose Creek oilfield.
One hundred and fifty years later, the protection afforded by the oil field
has left this old cemetery in remarkably good condition.
