[NI028965] One of the oldest cemeteries in the area, the Statler Cem. is located just off the old Forbes Trail, near Gahagen and about three miles northeast of Reels Corner. Buried there are some of the first settlers in Shade Twp, including veterans of the French and Indian, Revolutionary and Civil wars.

[NI028966] Energy & accomplishment were evidenced to a marked degree in Joseph's son Martin V. Sorber, b. ca 1838. He was a teacher in Buckstown in 1860, as revealed in a letter he wrote to a cousin in IL. His fluent & descriptive style indicate his intelligence & personality. These traits were to serve him well during his yrs as a Union soldier in the 55th Regt., Co. I. He enlisted in 1861 & advanced from Pvt to Corp. to Sgt. To 2nd Lt. & finally to Capt. By the time he was mustered out in 1865. For some yrs after the war he was a merchant in Buckstown; also was appointed Post Master there in 1873. By 1876 he was a dentist in Stoystown. His further activities are not known, but unless he 'ran out of steam' , it is likely his life continued full & productive. [55th Vol. Inf.- Co. [NI029115] Came to America in 1854 and was married to Jacob Hertlein (first husband, no relation to Lawrence Tennyson Hertlein, her second husband.) Jacob Hertlein joined to army during the war, and was only in camp 3 weeks when he was stricken with typhoid fever and died. They had one child -- Carolina Elizabeth Hertlein Yothers.

[NI029116] Landed in Baltimore in 1834. In 1835 he purchased 100 acres of Keating Land on Oak Hill, built himself a cabin and commenced clearing. On November 19th, 1835 he married Johanna Eisenman, native of the Grand Dutch of Baden Germany. Born 1819, she had four brothers: John, Jacob, Andrew, and Michael, also two sisters:Elizabeth who married Jacob Schneider, and Margaret who married James White.Mr. Hertlein worked at the Karthaus Furnace for .50 cents a day, and cleared land by night (by the light of the moon), and pine knots. Being a man of physique he did the work of two ordinary men and soon the wilderness gave way to his powerful arms. By industry and thrift he kept adding acres to acres of his possession until he bought 400 acres, at an average of $2.50 an acre. In 1840, he found a vein of Pitter's clay on his land. The following year he erected a kiln and commenced the manufacture of ware. The home market being limited, he bought a horse and wagon and hauled his wares to Milesburg, Pa., Bellefonte, Howard, Caledonia, and St. Marys. For a while business was brisk, but the roads being mostly new and very rough, the breakage left but a small margin of profit and the enterprise was abandoned. Although more than a half century has passed, some of the ware manufactured at this primitive pottery is still in use. When Mr. Hertlein was married, the young couple took possession of their cabin home, (this cabin was built on the old meadow on the farm at Oak Hill. He later built the second house that Lawrence (Lorenz) Tennyson Hertlein lived in, parts are still standing but not for long), he then built a third house at the top of the Lane that Ed Gilliland lived in, then later Lewis R. Hertlein (this house is still in use.) Mr. Hertlein began housekeeping and all of their world's goods were carried from Karthaus in two bundles, one in a bed-tick on the groom's back, and the other in a bandana handkerchief in the bride's hand. In those days every settler made their own furniture, and I assure you it was good and strong. Stoves were a luxury that they did not possess, and for years that old fashion fireplace was used, made by himself.

[NI029200] The Stotler Family research provides an interesting set of anecdotes abt Casper including the fact that Stotler's Tavern/Inn was located on Forbes Rd near Reel's Corner; He was listed in 1st US Census of 1790 (for Bedford Co. which later became Somerset Co.) In 1762 a party of settlers located along old Forbes Rd. This rd is the only ave. of commerce between Pittsburgh & Philadelphia for nearly 40 yrs & the homes of these settlers were stopping places of notoriety among traders & trappers & packers. Among them were Casper Statler near the summit of the Mt. He was 1st settler within the boundaries of Shade Twp. He built a cabin as early as 1762 at a place called "The Fields" (now the Guy Lambert Farm) along Forbes Rd on the west slope of the Allegheny Mt to which he brought his family in 1768. He serv in Gen. John Forbes' Army during the French & Indian War as an ensign in Capt. Edward Ward's Co. 1st Reg. of the PA Provincial Troops in the French & Indian War. Fought at Ft Duquesne (Pittsburgh) & defeated French in 1758, under the command of Col. Henry Bouquet. The Stotler family were temporarily driven out of their home several times by Indians. They bur their tools & other personal belongings which they could not take with them & went back to Cumberland Co. for safety. Each time after peace was restored with the Indians, they returned to their mt home. He was a genial, thrifty, whole-souled man. By his industry he accumulated much wealth. He purchased more than 1500 ac of land in Shade Twp from the Penns, most of which he had titled in the names of his 7 chldn. He also owned several hundred ac of land in Bedford Co. From his farm & in his home at "The Fields" he provided supplies & accommodations for many travelers along Forbes Rd from which he benefited greatly, both financially & otherwise. Since the Forbes Rd in this vicinity passed over much swampy ground & rugged terrain, it was found necessary to build a new rd. The new rd left the old rd a short distance east of "The Fields," passing abt a half mi south along what later became known as the "Great Rd" or "PA Rd." This new rd diverted much of Stotler's trade. To hold this trade, he then built a cabin near the intersection & stocked it with supplies, such as hay, oats, & other provisions. He employed a man to stay here, but when the man proved faithless, he put his son John, only 15 yrs old, in charge. Later he built a tavern here -1st tavern in Shade Twp. In time, John Stotler became the owner. Yrs later, when the PA Turnpike was constructed, this tavern became a noted place. It was located on the old Stoy farm, 1 mi east of Reel's Corners on Lincoln Hwy. He also taught school & built the 1st schoolhouse in Shade Twp in 1810. The Stotler School was closed in 1937- last of the one-room schools in twp. Casper Stotler, s/o Christopher Stotler, was b. Aug 18 1743, & d. Apr 12 1798, aged 55 yrs. He m. Rebecca Walters, who was b. 1736, & d. Feb 20 1826. They were m. at Carlisle, PA 1764, & were the parents of the following chldn: Casper, Jr., Mary, Elizabeth, John, Samuel, Emanuel, & Eleanor. Casper & his wife, Rebecca Stotler, are interred in the Stotler Cem. He emigrated on the ship "Bennett Galley" out of Rotterdam & qualified in Philadelphia Aug 13 1750. Lived in Concochesque Settlement. He was an ensign in Capt. Ward's Co., Was 1 of the 1st white settlers beyond Ft Bedford following the war. Took bride in 1770 to near present Stoystown & established hotel along Forbes Trail. This was the 1st Statler Hotel. [NI029569] Henry W. Hargis was one of the 1st settlers in Niobrara, NE. In 1862 occurred a genuine Indian scare. This was the result of the MN massacre, & while it turned out that the people were in little real danger, the incident illustrates the state of alarm in which they lived. All those living near Niobrara left, except William Lamont, William Bigham, H. W. Hargis, T. G. Hullihen & Antoine La Riviere. The scare was of short duration, & the people soon returned to their homes. In 1864 soldiers brought to Niobrara to protect the settlers from the Indians proved to be a far greater scourge than the Indians themselves. They conducted themselves with almost entire disregard of the rights of person & property. The people were compelled to leave their homes. Co. Clerk H. W. Hargis took the records of the co. to Omaha, & he never returned. No one remained in Niobrara the next winter but William Lamont. During the time of desertion the co. was without officers & practically without organization. In the spring of 1865 the settlers gradually returned. The 1st birth in Niobrara was that of a dau. to Mr. & Mrs. H. W. Hargis, & a few wks afterwards, on Oct 15, 1858, a son was born to Mr. & Mrs. William Lamont. The Hargis family moved to Iowa where a son was born in 1866. In 1867 they moved to Pleasant Prairie, WI. Death Certificate - Volume I, Page 135 Henry W. Hargis died 28 Apr 1881 in Kenosha Co. from pulmonary phlebitis. He was 67. (This part of the record difficult to read.) Henry was born Philadelphia, PA. He was 1st married to Mary Griffiths. His 2nd wife was Rebecca Sorber Hargis. His parents were Thomas & Julia Ann Hargis.

[NI030158] 20th Pres of USA
James Abram Garfield s/o Abram Garfield & Eliza Ballou Garfield, New Englanders who had settled in Western Reserve region of northern OH. Abram Garfield, a farmer & canal construction worker, d when James was 2 yrs old, leaving his widow & 4 chldn to face the rigors of frontier life. James's childhood was one of hardship & work. The last pres. to be b in a log cabin, Garfield had little leisure time in his youth. He did farm work until he was 16 yrs old, then found employment on a canal boat. Garfield's brief administration was marked by intraparty disputes over Cabinet appointments & the disposition of federal patronage. Garfield passed over the Stalwart faction in filling important government posts. His appointment of Blaine, leader of the Half-Breeds, as sec of state was especially offensive to Conkling & the Stalwarts. Conkling countered by trying to block Garfield's appointments to the NY Custom House & resigning his Senate seat in protest. The protest was futile, & Garfield's choices were approved by Congress. In the spring of 1881, Garfield began the prosecution of the star rte frauds, an attempt by post office employees, in collusion with pvt mail carriers, to defraud the government. Before the case was brought to trial, however, Garfield's career came to an abrupt end. On the morn of Jul 2 1881, Garfield was preparing for a trip to New England. While waiting for his train in Washington's Baltimore & Potomac RR sta., he was felled & gravely wounded by the shots of an assassin. Garfield was carried to the presidential mansion, the White House. For wks he was nursed there. Later he was moved to Elberon, NJ, to be with his family. Garfield never left his sickbed, & on Sep 19, 11 wks after the shooting, he d. His assassin was Charles J.
