[NI035243] News Article from The Johnstown Tribune: STATE STREET WOMAN DROWNED IN CISTERN: FELL IN HEAD FIRST Mrs. Orlo Wagner Victim of Tragedy at Her Southmont Home; Husb. Had Drawn Water & Re-covered Well Before Going to Work; Dau.s Upon Arising miss Mother & search Instituted Reveals Her Body in 5 Ft of Water, Head Covered; Was Well Known Church Worker. Becoming alarmed over the continued absence of their mother, who, was about the home at an early hr, 2 dau.s of Mrs. Della Wagner, w. of Orlo Wagner, of 114 State St, Southmont, instituted a search that resulted in the finding of the body in a cistern under the rear porch of the home shortly before 8 am this morning. Mrs. Wagner perished in about 5 ft of water, & it is the belief of the family that she lost her balance while working around the reservoir & fell into the water. Following the discovery of the body by the Mses Zelda & Violet Wagner, dau. of the deceased, neighbors were summoned. George Peden & his son, Roy Peden, Athletic director at Johnstown Hi Schl, live nearby, & together with Joseph Peden, bro. of George, they attempted to revive Mrs. Wagner after Joseph Peden had descended into the well, fasted a rope around the body & raised Mrs. Wagner to the porch. Efforts at resuscitation were futile, life being extinct. Chief of Police Larry Keller also assisted in taking the body from the cistern & in resuscitation work. Mrs. Wagner fell into the cistern some time between 6 am, when her husb. departed for his employment in the Cambria Steel Works, & 7:30 am. When Zelda & Violet Wagner arose. How long she remained in the well is roblematical.
Before leaving the home Mr. Wagner drew enough water to fill a tub & bucket which Mrs. Wagner requested for scrubbing. He was careful to replace the cover over the cistern, he said. The cistern extends to a depth of about 11 ft, but contained only about 5 ft of water this morning. A rain spout circling around the rear of the home empties into the reservoir. Marks about the forehead & nose, the skin being slightly broken, leave room for the supposition that Mrs. Wagner may have struck the concrete side of the well in her fall. Because of trouble with the electric lights, believed to have been due to water flooding a conduit, it is thought that Mrs. Wagner did not begin her tasks on the rear porch until daylight. She intended to scrub the porch, the family stated. A broom was lying crossways over the uncovered cistern is accepted as mute evidence that Mrs. Wagner had commenced her work when she toppled into the water. Dirt accumulates around the ledges of the cistern giving rise to the belief that she may have been sweeping the edges when she fell in. The lid that covers the top of the cistern was later found lying at the bottom of the well, with one section apparently broken off. In order to clean the edges Mrs. Wagner may have removed the lid.
The belief of those who recovered the body is that Mrs. Wagner fell in head first. The body was reclining slightly against the side of the cistern when found, with the head and other parts entirely covered by water. About a yr ago Mrs. Wagner underwent a serious operation, her gall bladder & appendix, being removed. Since her health had been steadily returning, members of the family state, & marked improvement in her general condition was noticeable the past few mos. On Tue. of last wk she attended the funeral of her aunt, Mrs. Sarah Helsel of Elton. While complaining of not feeling well at that time no serious results followed. She was b. in Richland Twp. on Sep 15 1879, being the dau. of the late Samuel & Mary (Kring) Strayer, both deceased. Her father's death occurred in Dale Borough about 3 yrs ago. Her m. to Orlo Wagner took place in Walnut grove on Dec 14 1903. Surviving, in addition to her husb., are 3 chldrn, Verna, w. of Theodore Wagner, of Somerset St.; Zelda & Violet at home; 2 sis.s, Mrs. Sarah Leberknight, w. of Noah Leberknight of Jacoby St., Walnut Grove; Mrs. George Peden, Southmont; & 1 bro, Lemon Strayer, who lives in the Leberknight home, Jacoby St. For many yrs Mrs.; Wagner was an active figure in church, missionary & Sun Schl activities at the Homestead Ave. Un. Breth. Ch. Last evening the Willing Workers Bible Class, a group of girls of which she was the teacher for a large number of yrs, sponsored a meeting at the Singer farm in Daiseytown. Mr. & Mrs. Wagner attended, returning home about midnight. Mrs. Wagner was a member of the Women's Missionary Society, taking a prominent part in its affairs. Funeral arrangements have not been announced. The body was removed to the W. C. Flick mortuary to be prepared for burial. THE END
According to Zelda's husb., Cliff Anderson, Orlo had a "dumb-contraption" under his porch. If my memory serves, acc. to him the lid was always a pain & never seemed to fit correctly. Always tripping over the thing! Per 1992 conversation with him One can only imagine the double-guessing Orlo had to live with for the rest of his life! Now its condemned & boarded up.The back porch had been cemented over with no trace of the well beneath.

[NI035250] Daily Democrat - Johnstown, Mon, Aug 14 1899: KILLED BY POLE BREAKING Earl A. Strayer, married, & living at the head of Hickory St. in Dale Boro, d. at 10:30 pm Sat. as the result of a peculiar accident at a house raising. The accident occurred at 3 pm & had several very distressing features.
Young Strayer--he was little past his 23rd b.day--was a carpenter, & regularly employed in Ott's planning mill. Cyrus Wissinger had secured a contract for moving the house of Mrs. Muir on Horner St., opposite Boyer's store, & employed Strayer as one of his assistants. In the work of moving the house a large windlass was used, turned by 2 poles. 2 men worked at each pole. At 3 o'clock, when the men were in the midst of the afternoon's rush preparatory to closing up over Sun., the pole which Strayer & his assistant were working suddenly broke. Strayer & his partner, a man named Daniel Schaffer made desperate efforts to hold the broken pole, but the momentum of the windlass was too great, & in an instant the broken pole flew into the air. Strayer was hit on the temple & immediately rendered unconscious. Schaffer was hit on the malar or cheek bone & was severely, but not fatally injured. He was removed to his home, 903 Bedford St., & given medical attention. Drs. Huebner & Conrad were at once summoned & pronounced Strayer's injuries very serious. The unfortunate young man was immediately taken to his home. He remained unconscious until the end, despite efforts to revive him, & at 10:30 passed away. Earl A. Strayer was the son of Samuel & Mary Strayer of Adams Twp., & was b. May 12 1876. He m. an estimable young woman a few yrs ago, & is survived by her & 2 chldrn, Arden & Donah. In addition, he is survived by his parents & these sis.s & a bro.: Mrs. Priscilla Thatcher, a widow, who lives at Summerhill; Mrs. Veneta Peden of Roxbury; Mrs. Leverknight of Walnut Grove, & Della at home, & Lemon Strayer in Richland Twp. The remains will be taken to Elton for burial Tue. 8:30 am. The deceased was a memb. of the Un. Breth. Ch. in Walnut Grove & funeral serv.s will be conducted by Rev. O.M. Wilson, pastor of the church.

Headline: BURNED TO DEATH IN BED A HORROR IN THE VILLAGE OF ELTON WEDNESDAY NIGHT The House of Samuel Kring & Another Building Destroyed & He & His Wife Suffocated & their bodies Partly Consumed in the Flames. The Villagers wild with Excitement. Heroic Attempts at Rescue. Abt 10:30 pm at night the village of Elton, containing between 100 & 200 people, 7 mi.s southeast of this city (Johnstown, PA) Adams Twp., Cambria Co., was thrown into a state of great excitement by the breaking out of a fire. Most of the villagers had retired for the night, & it was the men of Ickes' Hotel who, being still astir, 1st discovered the flames. The fire was discovered to be in the rear part of the residence of Samuel Kring. Flames were shooting out through the windows. In front some of the men broke open the door & windows, but a tremendous volume of flame & black smoke burst through the openings thus made, & prevented entrance to the building. Several desperate attempts were made by persons to force their way into the house, & water was freely applied from a hole cut through the ice in a dam nearby, in the hope of rescuing Mr. & Mrs. Kring who slept in a room on the 1st floor, but every such attempt proved futile, the heat & suffocating smoke being more than anyone could endure, & the poor old couple were of necessity abandoned to their fate. The flames made rapid headway, & not only quickly consumed the building in which they originated but communicated with one adjoining & destroyed it. The former was a 2 story plank, occupied & used as a warehouse. Both belonged to Mr. Kring. As soon as the flames had spent their fury, water was thrown in considerable quantities upon the charred timbers at the corner of the house in which the room was located where the aged couple slept, in the hope of finding whatever of their bodies the fire had not consumed. The search soon resulted in the uncovering of the blackened bodies of both Mr. & Mrs. Kring. Nothing but the trunks were left. Mrs. Kring's was found in one corner of the room where the bed had stood & Mr. Kring's in another corner where there had been a lounge, indicating that she had been sleeping in the bed & he on the lounge. The remains were not disturbed at the time, some of the people thinking that an inquest should be held & that the remains should not be interfered with until viewed by a jury. Word was accordingly sent to Squire Henry Fye (Frye) & he arrived yesterday morn. After an investigation, he decided that an inquest was not necessary. The remains were thereupon taken from the ruins & placed in a house nearby. As to the origin of the fire, nothing has been definitely learned. There was a stove in the out-kitchen adjoining the rear of the house & there was also one in the sleeping room. It is thought that in someway the building caught from one of these, probably from the one in the bed chamber, the resulting smoke quickly stupefying the old couple & rendering them helpless victims of the flames. Their extreme age, too, was against them. Mr. Kring having attained his 79th yr & Mrs. Kring her 83rd. She was quite feeble, but managed to do her own work unaided, & there was nobody at the house but her & her vulnerable partner. As may easily be imagined, the scene in the village & for some time after the fire was one of wildest excitement. The church bells were rung, the people yelled, & everyone was in a measure of terror-stricken, while the pitiful cries & frantic conduct of the dau. of Mr. & Mrs. Kring, the widow of Charles Helsel, living in Elton, added a most distressing nature to the sad affair. The dau, was Sarah Kring Helsel.

[NI035257] The following story was told to Sandra Kring Horner by Ruth Ellen Reynolds Fisher, Aug 15 1978. This story was told to Ruth by her grandmother Lydia Kring Reynolds, Aaron's sis. Aaron Kring was drafted to go fight in the Civil War & his 3 sis.s, Sarah, Lydia & Mary said they would sooner see him go to his grave. On the day he was to leave for the war, he died.

[NI035271] Kring Book: Jacob vanished after finding his name on an Inquisition of Real Estate settling his mother's property after her death in 1852. Due to several letters written by Dr. Daniel A. Poling; the will of Magdalena Kring Snavely; & the mysterious disappearance of Jacob Kring, we feel strongly that his chldn were raised by several of his bros & sis' after the death of Elizabeth Rose Kring. We believe Rev. S. B. Kring may have been raised partially by Daniel Kring, & partially by Rev. Conrad Kring, bros of Jacob Kring. This would give reason for the Evangl Assc to believe Rev. S. B. Kring was a worthy s/o Rev. Conrad Kring, as they wrote in their history books. It would also explain why Dr. Daniel Poling had a picture of Daniel Kring, with Gfather written on the back, which led him to believe Daniel Kring was his gfather, or thoroughly confused him. The will of Magdalena Kring Snavely, also gives reason to further believe this was the situation. Why would an Aunt leave most of her estate to a niece instead of her own sons or stepsons, if she had not raised her as a daug from birth?

[NI035424] All but Christopher stayed in VA. Christopher changed the spelling from De Burt to Dibert & returned to what is now Bedford Co, PA in 1740. Christopher Dibert's records show that he was knows by 'Thomas Christopher' as well as 'Charles Christopher Dibert'. His son Michael called him 'Thomas' while his gchdn & later his descs knew him as 'Charles'.
Christopher Dibert & his wife, Eve Elizabeth Dibert, had a family including sons Michael & Adam & 3 other chdn. Christopher was killed by Indians in 1757. Some members of the family went to VA while some others continued to live in the co.
Records in Deed Book 'A' in Bedford Co Court House show copies of warranties to Christopher Dibert, taken out by his son Michael in 1766, in Cumberland Co. In one Michael mentioned, 'This is the land my Father returned to, which was his Father's (John) settlement.' Doing much research, not only in Bedford Co but in VA, Humphrey Dibert found that John & Mary Dibert & 7 of their 12 chdn were massacred by the Indians in 1732. The 5 that escaped made their way back to their kin in VA. Of the 3 sons & 2 daus, only 1, Charles Christopher, returned to Bedford Co. Christopher m Eve Elizabeth Dubert, believed to be his cousin. With their yr-old son, Michael, they returned to the place where most of Christopher's family had been killed when he was 13. Two more sons & at least 2 daus were b to this hearty couple. Christopher was killed by the Indians in 1757, & is bur in the Dibert Cem, now on the Alvie Claycomb farm. This grave is the oldest kwn marked grave in the co. Eve Elizabeth, the mother whose blood runs in a great many present day Bedford Co citizens, lived to be 95 yrs old, dying in 1815. She is bur in the old Messiah Luth Cem in Bedford Twp, Bedford Co, less than a mi from where she settled in 1740.
In 1740, Charles Christopher, s/o John & Mary deBurt, & his wife Eve Elizabeth Dubert, returned to Bedford, where most of his family had been killed when he was 13. They had their 1 yr old son, Michael, with them. History records that 2 more sons, John & William, & at least 3 more daus, were b to this frontier couple. Christopher was killed by the Indians in 1757. The name deBurt (also written deBarte) eventually became the present day Dibert.
