[NI036743] The following article appeared in the Barber Co. Index following Clarene Egbert Thompson's death on Dec. 17th 1946: Clarence E. Thompson, register of deeds of Barber Co. for almost 36 yrs, died about 11 a.m. Tue. at Achenbach Memorial Hosp. in Hardtner at the age of 78. He had been in the hosp.since Nov. 25 when he was taken seriously ill. He was elected to his first term as register of deeds Nov. 8, 1910, and would have completed his 36th yr in the office next mo. He had not planned to retire, however, he had been re-elected without opposition for another term. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, with Masonic services at the graveside. He is survived by his wife, a son, Melvin Thompson, of Chicago, 3 grandchildren, Clarence Thompson, Chicago, Lester Thompson, in the Navy, and Ernest Thompson, in CT, several great-grandchildren and a brother, James W. Thompson, of Tulsa, Ok. Mr. & Mrs. Thompson helped raise and educate several of Mr. Thompson's nieces. Mr. Thompson received his education in Medicine Lodge, was agent for the Singer Sewing Machine Company here for some time, worked for various mercantile establishments, was assistant postmaster 8 years, and had been employed two years in the People's State Bank when he was elected register of deeds in 1910. One of the oldest remaining pioneers of Barber Co. at the time of his death, Mr. Thompson was born Nov. 23 1868 in St. Clair Co., MO, and came here in 1878 at the age of 10. As a youth he attended school in a half dugout, half sod house, remembered Barber co. when antelopes, turkey and other wild game roamed across the prairie and participated in the run at the opening of the Cherokee strip in 1893. "I remember one of my first experiences was to run plumb into a nice patch of well-matured sandburrs," Mr. Thompson said in his reminiscences for the Index several years ago. "A painful experience, I assure you. We roamed over the prairie gathering buffalo bones, which was one of our means of gaining a livelihood. Father took these bones to Wichita, when going to that place for supplies for the merchants of Medicine Lodge. He would sell the bones, getting about $11 or $12 per ton for them, bringing home a load of frieght for the merchants here; also bringing home bacon and beans for half a dozen hungry young Americans. "Father lost his best horse on one of these trips, a tragedy indeed for us in those days. He finally borrowed or hired another horse from the Mart Updegraff ranch, that was usually a stopping place for the freighters of the early days. He brought his wagon load of freight in, and had to ride one horse back and lead the other to return him. He had to cut 500 cedar posts for another pony he purchades from Ry VanSlyke. The Gyp hills were covered with lots of fine cedar trees at that time. "Once again misfortune over-took us and one of the horses died. Dad traded the other one for a yoke of oxen, with which he broke the sod in the Sharon Valley for James Huffaker, Garrison and others who composed the old Christian colony which first settled the Sharon Valley. We moved to the claim father took in 1879 about three and one-half miles east of Medicine Lodge. We lived in a dugout - that is half sugiut and half sod house, with dirt floor and dirt roof. The roof was composed of a cottonwood log ridge pole, with small cottonwood poles laid from the walls of the house across these center poles, and then a layer of brush covered with a layer of grass and dirt and sod on top - a nice harbinger for centipedes, tantulas, snakes and mice. It was not uncommon for some old bull snake to lose his footing on the ridge poles and come tumbling down onto the dirt floor. We had to examine the bed every night before retiring to see if any of these visitors had appropriated it first. That feeling did not always induce sound sleep at first retiring. "However, these dugouts were warm in the winter and cool in the summer-but oh, when it rained , as it sometimes did, the water would pour in through rat holes and crevices and get our buffalo chips wet so that they would not burn, and there isn't anything more difficult to burn than a wet buffalo chip. I know. "The first school I attended in Barber Co. was in a half dug cut half sod house with board roof and dirt floor. It had a large table in the center of the room, made of native cottonwood lumber, around which we youngsters sat to study our lessons on benches made of native cottonwood slabs. "I have seen antelopes roaming accross the prairies of Barber Co. -also wild turkeys and plenty of other wild game. "I was living in the city of Medicine Lodge during the flood of 1885 and was an eyewitness to many of it's tragedies. That flood is a very vivid picture in my memory. "I was also a resident of Medicine Lodge during the attempted bank robbery of 1884. I did not see the hanging that night owing to parental objections. "I participated in the run at the opening of the Cherokee strip on Sept.16,1893. I wish I had the gift of language to describe that scene at 12 o'clock that day "I was well and personally aquainted with Carrie and David Nation-in fact I entered a contract to live in part of their house, rent free, my wife to do the cooking, they to board us and pay us 12-1/2 cents a meal. We tried it one month. It was not so good. My wife said we ought to move and we did." FROM JAMES WALTER THOMPSON'S "Changing Race and Other Verses",
Marvin Printing Company, Tulsa, OK, 1959" MY BROTHER CLARENCE A little man, a little town, A little job, no great renown, A little smile, a great big heart, Kept him and littleness far apart, He seemed so peaceful lying there, no sign of worry or of care, A look of calm and sweet content, Remaining from the life he spent, That strong firm nose, that noble brow, How clearly do we see them now; We could not fail to estimate, The kindly soul that made him great. No word of malice ever came, From those pale li[s, no burning flame, Of anger blew its fatal breath, To scorch a frienship unto death. And while we grieve to see him go, No fear, no pain, no grief, no woe, Can ever, ever touch him where, He strools neath skies forever fair.
