[NI043751] Robert Thompson shows up on the 1894 & 1900 census of Winfield twp., Montcalm co., MI. It states that Anna had been in MI since 1873 & Robert had been there since 1874. They were both b. in Canada apparently & then came into the US via PA where they had gained their citizenship. It also shows Robert's father as being Canadian & his mother Scottish. Both of Anna's parents were Canadian. On the 1894 MI Agricultural Census it said Anna or Annie had 6 chldrn, 5 of which were living.

[NI043801] David J. Shaffer, 4th son 7th chld of John & Catherine (Couster) Shaffer with the given b. & d. dates. He was a man of good judgment & sterling qualities, & these made up for edu. deficencies. He settled in Paint Twp., 1852, on the farm purchased from his uncle Daniel, & there resided until 1864, when he removed to where Windber now stands. He was in the lumber contracting & bldg bus. at the time of the great flood of May 31 1889, Johnstown. He was a memb. of the German Bapt. Ch., in which he held the position of deacon, & affiliated with the Whig party. He serv. for a no. of yrs as school director & supervisor. He was among the 1st to be drafted at the outbreak of the Civil war, & paid $300 which the gov't accepted in lieu of his serv.s. During 1863-5, he was post provost marshal & enrolling office." David Shaffer was a large landowner, whose farm covered most of what is the town of Windber, Somerset Co., PA, he was also a building contractor & farmer. He was a Deacon in the German Ref. Ch, of which he & his wife were memb. He serv., during Civil War, as Post Provost Marshal, in lieu of mil. serv. David & Rachel Shaffer pioneers in Windber By Patricia Shaffer, Windber-Johntown Genealogical Society Taken from The Windber Era, Apr 7 1987 David J. Shaffer, s/o John D. & Catherine (Custer) Shaffer, was b. Greenland section of Paint Twp. Jan 27 1828. He grew to adulthood in that section & received his education in Twp. schools, taking advantage of such edu. as existed in his younger dys. Jan 12 1851, David J. Shaffer m. Ms Rachel Holsapple, d/o Isaac & Christina (Hoffman) Holsapple, b. Oct 30 1831, Paint Twp. They purchased land from his uncle, Daniel Shaffer that was situated in what presently is Rummel-Old Ashtola area of land. Here they resided for the 1st yrs of their m. On 29 Dec 1893 David & Rachel sold their land for $12,706.11 to Berwind & White, Then retired to what soon became Paint Boro. They became the parents of 9 chldn- 6 boys & 3 girls. 1864 David J. Shaffer purchased the land of Jacob Messerbaugh, near the present day Windber Fire Co. bldg, on the Paint Creek, & here the family resided in that section which then was as yet unpopulated. The wilderness area that lay between Scalp Level & Rummel that we now know as Windber Boro was not settled until 1897. Except for the few scattering of farms on the outskirts, the only home situated on the land was that of David J. Shaffer. The Shaffer homestead was situated where the Windber Municipal Bldg stands today, on the corner of Somerset Ave. & 15th St.. It later was moved to face 15th St.. It is behind the Municipal Bldg, serving as the Windber Museum. David J. Shaffer, farmer who dealt in lumbering in the latter yrs of his life & became successful in bus., managing his own affairs, noted as the last of the pioneers. The homestead was sold to the Berwind White Coal Co. 1893 & the Shaffers moved into Scalp Level where they retired from farming, lived to see their farm fields turned into home sites that by 1900 held over 4,000 people. They saw progress in the making as the woodsman's ax chopped the virgin trees & only the wild animals like thunder in the silent woods occupied the sound throughout the wilderness. Today this is the Boro of Windber. David J. Shaffer, last of the pioneers, d. Oct 7 1900 & bur. Berkey Ch. Cem. Rachel d. Sep 16 1919. Their chldn were Frances, Isaac, Catherine, Jacob, Christina, Josiah, Lewis, Daniel, & Norman D. Shaffer. Many of the chldn of the 9 chldrn who were b. to David J. Shaffer & Rachel (Holsapple) Shaffer went on to be prominent well remembered citizens in the Windber- Johnstown area, as well as throughout the US. Down through the generations the des. of this 1st family, who resided on the land that today is the town of Windber, have proven to their communities, wherever they may live, that they still maintain high level of serv. & faith as did their ancestor over 100 yrs ago in Paint Twp.

[NI044017] Lived in Somerset Co., PA. Although Conrad Thomas Lint Jr. d. in Nov. 1805 his w. Catherine held the little family together over the next 21 yrs until she d. in 1826. Also on 30 Nov. 1805 in Somerset, Somerset Co., PA, Conrad's estate was filed as #28. When Conrad d. in 1805 apparently his w. Catherine either didn't want to be executor of his estate or was incompetent. In either event, on 30 Nov 1805 Catherine was "renounced" as executor of Conrad Lind's will & Christian Lint [Conrad's bro.] & Christian Kugel were appointed as administrators of the will. Alex Ogle & Gillian Lichtenberger [this is either Christian Lint's w. Elizabeth's father (probably) or bro. (possibly)] were appointed as bondsmen. Receipt's from disposition of the property were $554.34 of which only $160.93 remained for the heirs to share after all the bills were pd. The widow Catherine received 1/3 [ie., $53,64] & the rest was shared equally among the 5 chldrn each recieving $21.45. A note indicated that son John Lint bought $25.90, & son Jacob Lint bought $2.50 in goods sold at public venue.

[NI044023] History of Bedford & Somerset Co., by William H. Welfley, 1906, 3 volumes, 1802pp Christian LINT,Sr. native Franklin Co., came to Greenville Twp in 1816. The process of settlement was very slow & he is accounted as an early settler. He d. 1852 age 86. His wife was Elizabeth Lichtenberger & their chldn were: Jacob, Daniel, Gideon, Christian Jr, John, Conrad, Joseph, & Elizabeth (BAKER). The parents of Christian Lint Sr. came from Germany & were sold for their passage money. The mother labored 6 yrs to pay the debt; the father, probably, not that long. Jacob Lint, who is still living, is the oldest man in the twp, b. 1796 Somerset Twp. He has resided in Greenville Twp since 1816. He followed co-opering 7 yrs then bought his father's farm on which he still lives. Mr. Lint has been a memb. of Reformed Ch. for over 50 yrs. His son, Joseph J. Lint farmed for his father until 1846 & has been farming for himself since that time. His farm contains 277 ac.s, of which 150 have been cleared & are in good condition. Mr. Lint has served as school director & twp assessor for 15 yrs. The Lint farm was bought from John Meese by Christian Lint. Mr. Meese erected a sawmill on the property which has been still in operation. It has been rebuilt twice, 1837 & 1846.

[NI044041] John went to visit Greenville twp., & while he was there suffered a stroke & died. His remains couldn't be returned home because they were frozen & snowbound. When I interviewed John Noah Lint in 1991 he told this story & I was led to believe that John was ultimately buried at the Reformed Church near Pochahontas, PA. No marker remained since it was destroyed by a farmer. I believe now that the story was true, John Lint is in fact buried in Boyt's Burial Ground. This small plot containing only 13 tombstones [4 of them chldrns] is located on the farm of Josia J. Boyts in Quemahoning twp., Somerset co., PA about 4 mi.s east of Sipesville on Rte 311 above the Texas school house.

[NI044052] It's interesting to note that in the Sanner Church Cem. [about 2 miles N.E. of Rockwood in Black Twp., Somerset co., PA] Elizabeth Walters Lint has 2 tombstones. 1 tombstone has 25 Jun 1775 - 15 Apr 1841 wife of John Lint. The other has 25 Jun 1775 - 5 Apr 1844.

1. In the 1850 OH census, Killbuck twp., Holmes co., 30 Jul 1850 on page 118 it listed Joseph Lint and his wife Mary as farmers. Melchoir Lint (father) (aged 67 b. 1784) and Catherine Lint (mother) (aged 65 b.1786) were also living in the house at the time of the 1850 census. For the 1860 census Melchoir was living with Daniel but Catherine wasn't so she had possibly died. Her resting place would then be in Holmes or Tuscarawas counties aged between 65 and 75. A Margaret Lowe of OH was also in the household with no age or relation given. Two Lowe brothers married two Lint sisters during this period so probably some relation existed.

[NI044211] Peter Lint's wife was Harriet Ellenberger whose sisters Elizabeth Nancy Ellenberger had also married 2 of Peter's bro.s. So we have Harriet & Peter, Elizabeth & Aaron, Nancy & Henry. The fact that 3 bro.s marry 3 sis,s by itself isn't unusual. What is unusual is that the 3 sis.'s mother is an Elizabeth Lint (1799-1873). Her origins are ukwn. Peter Lint's chldrn by Harriet Ellenberger numbered 12 with 7 sons & 5 daug.s. Of those 12 chldrn 2 were blind from birth & I'm told several others suffered from various deformities or infirmities (whatever they were). Of the 12 chldrn 3 died at an early age. None of the 5 daug. ever married. Why? Did they know something that we don't today. Was the 1799 Elizabeth Lint 1of the daug.s of Henry or in-other-words a sis. of James, these 3 bro.'s father? In fact only 4 of the 12 chldrn ever married. It would be interesting to track the kinds of medical problems these folks encounterd & also to find out if the 2 bro.s' families had similiar problems. Magma UT references have Henry's data as 24 Jul 1820-Jul 1887 but I don't trust that data as well as I do Jesse's.

He had been an invalid for a number of yrs. He formerly conducted a store at Dawson & was then a farmer in Lower Tyrone & moved to Connellsville in 1901. He was twice married & his 2nd wife, who was formerly Mrs. Jennie Sisler of Fairchance, died in 1894. He is survived by 6 chldrn, 1 of whom is Mrs. E. C. Higbee. Funeral at 1:30 p.m. Mon. from the home & interment in Cochran Cem. at Dawson.

[NI044217] Peter Lint's wife was Harriet Ellenberger whose sis.s Elizabeth & Nancy Ellenberger had also married 2 of Peter's bro.s. So we have Harriet & Peter, Elizabeth Aaron, & also Nancy & Henry. The fact that 3 bro.s marry 3 sis. by itself isn't unusual. What is unusual is that the 3 sis.'s mother is an Elizabeth Lint (1799-1873). Her origins are ukwn to me at the present time & warrant investigation. Peter Lint's children by Harriet Ellenberger numbered 12 with 7 sons & 5 daug.s. Of those 12 chldrn 2 were blind from birth & I'm told several others suffered from various deformities or infirmities (whatever they were). Of the 12 chldrn 3 died at an early age. [NI044400] Two things are worthy of note on this family & deserve investigation. Those items are as follows: 1.) Peter Lint's wife was Harriet Ellenberger whose sis's Elizabeth & Nancy Ellenberger had also married 2 of Peter's bro.. So we have Harriet & Peter, Elizabeth & Aaron, & Nancy & Henry. The fact that 3 bro.s marry 3 sisters by itself isn't unusual. What is unusual is that the 3 sis's mother is an Elizabeth Lint (1799-1873). Her origins are unknown to me at the present time & warrant investigation. Why? That brings me to note two. 2.) Peter Lint's chldrn by Harriet Ellenberger numbered 12 with 7 sons & 5 daug.s. Of those 12 chldrn 2 were blind from birth & I'm told several others suffered from various deformities or infirmities (whatever they were). Of the 12 chldrn 3 died at an early age. None of the 5 daug.s ever married. Why? Did they know something that we don't today. Was the 1799 Elizabeth Lint one of the daug.s of Henry or in-other-words a sis. of James (these 3 bro.'s father)? In fact only 4 of the 12 chldrn ever married. It would be interesting to track the kinds of medical problems these folks encountered & also to find out if the 2 bro.s' families had similiar problems.

[NI044401] Mary "Platts" Lint's death notice showed up in the 8 Aug 1896 issue of the South Bend Weekly Trib on pg 6 saying: "North Liberty: Mrs. Lint died at her home here on Aug. 4th aged 84 yrs [1812]. The funeral services were held at the Dunkard Church Thurs. at 10 a.m. Rev Whitmer officiating.

[NI044465] Jessie Ogelvie Lint (b.1869) is NOT the son of Peter Lint (b.1837). When I first interviewed Catherine Lint Lopez (Jessie's descendant) & Clara Lint in ID, Catherine recounted the following family history; Jessie Lint (1869-1927) was taken in but not adopted by the family of Peter Lint. Jessie later chose the name of the folks who had taken him in instead his father's name of Cochran. Jessie today is buried with his wife in the Cochran Cem. next to Jesse Oliver Lint (1866-1946) who was like an older bro. to Jessie. Jessie later had 13 chldrn of his own, several of which chose to keep the Lint name as their father had done. Others chose the Cochran name & some married taking their husb.'s name (as is customary). In 1900 Dawson, Cochran was a prestigious name because they were wealthy & ran Dawson. Most Lints on the other hand were working folk in the mines & on the coke ovens. On my 1994 research trip I met Jesse Lint in Dawson, PA, who's researched the genealogy of Fayette Co. Lints for yrs. He showed me a slightly different picture that was similiar but 1 generation earlier in time. The census records support Jesse's theory which is; Jame's Lint b.1788 had 10 chldrn, 5 of which were daug.s. 1of the daug.s (Catherine) apparently had a son out of wedlock which was fathered by Isaac Cochran. This son was Isaac Lint (b.1846) who on the 1850 (age 4) and 1860 (age 14) census carried the name Cochran lived in Lint households. By the 1870 census Isaac used the name Lint. This Isaac Lint (b.1846) is the father of Jessie Ogelvie Lint (b. 1869). So, the family history Catherine Lint related was basically true but a generation off. It really applied to Jessie's father Isaac, & he wasn't just taken in, he was born by James Lint's daug. Catherine. It may be true that half his blood or genes may be Cochrans' but the mother was a Lint & the chld was raised in the Lint family. Gola Wood who contacted me 23 Jan 95 as I write this, confirms that Isaac Lint was born of Catherine Lint & Isaac Cochran. The confusing part is that he used both the Lint & Cochran names over the period of his lifetime. Apparently Isaac's chldrn also had identity problems and made their choices accordingly. Isaac's son Jessie Ogelvie Lint (b.1869) used both names over his lifetime & also created confusion among his children who were split on which name, Lint or Cochran, they used. Regardless of the name Isaac or Jessie used during whatever period of their lives, their ancestors & many descendants are Lints & they bridge these 2 generations. Their bloodline is Lint & they will be called such in this document.

[NI044988] One of Donna Knupp's notes on William Lint was that he built a house on his property in 1917. He later sold his farm & apparently bought Hiram Lint's farm in Lincoln twp [Hiram & William's uncle]. This was later sold to his [William] son Clyde & William movd into a small house located on a corner of the farm. We know his wife Annie passed on in 1925 [she age 61 & him 63] & apparently a friend of his Sarah Casebeer moved into the small house with him [their relationship was unknown] & after William passed on in 1933 the house was left to her.

[NI045018] Rosa Ann Lint & her sis. Eliza (of Conrad & Catharine Tressler Lint) married 2 bro.s, John P. Hay & Peter P. Hay (of Peter F. & Catharine Knepper Hay) in Somerset Co., PA. John & Rosa had 8 chldrn, 4 of which were born in IA. In the spring of 1857 the John P. & Peter P. Hay families along with Dr. & Mrs. George Graham, Dr. & Mrs. Merces, Mr. & Mrs. Meese, & James Mervine traveled as a group to Clearcreek twp., Jasper Co., IA. They used 7 covered wagons pulled by horses and arrived at their destination on 20 May 1857 after 45 days of travel. John P. Hay purchased 160 acres in the S.W. quarter of section 32 in Clearcreek twp., Jasper co., IA which is across from the present location of the Graham Cem. where both are buried. John P. Hay died 7 Feb 1894 as a result of injuries rec'd from a run-away horse when the horse became frightened by steam coming from a steam feed mill. John and Rosa both got out of their buggie & John took the horse by the bridle to lead it past the mill. Steam escaping from the mill frightened the horse making it rear up, pulling John off his feet. The horse then trampled & ran over John as it ran off. John never regained consciousness & died several days after the accident. John was buried in the Graham Cem. directly across the road from his property. It is interest to note on the plat maps of 1870 that 2.5 miles due north up the road, John's bro. Peter P. Hay also owned 160 acres in the S.W. quarter of section 17 in Clearcreek twp. Half way between John & Peter's farms, Alexander Lint (Rosa & Eliza's 1st cousin) had a 100 acre farm & in the N.W. corner of section 27 Conrad J. Lint (Rosa & Eliza's father) had 15 acres. The 6th & 7th generations of these Hay families still reside & have farms in this area today. This information was taken from page 338 of a History of Mingo, Jasper co., IA & 1870 plat maps of the Clearcreek twp (twp. 81 N., rng. 21 W.) Jasper co., IA.

According to a History of Mingo, Jasper co., IA Peter Nedrow & his wife Christianna were residents of PA in 1866. At the age of 70 (in 1866) they both walked from Somerset co., PA to visit a son Jonathan who lived in Preston co., WV. They stayed with the son 3 mo.s & then returned to Somerset. Shortly afterward (1867) Peter traveled to Poweshiek twp., in Jasper co., IA to visit another son John Penrod Nedrow. Peter died the 10th of May 1869 at 79 years & 12 days & was buried in the Greencastle Cem.. His grandson John Wesley who died in 1874 lies beside him. Peter is supposedly the only individual in the Greencastle Cem. who was born in the 18th century. It is ukwn if Christianna ever made the trip to Poweshiek twp., with her husband but she was buried in Greenville twp., Somerset co., PA

[NI045086] The Lint's buried in the Graham Cem., Clearcreek twp., Jasper co., IA row 3 plots numbered 16 through 19 are probably related due to the laws of proximity, but the relationship is not positive at the present time. Conrad J. Lint (1806-1865) is buried in plot 20. Judging from his known chldrn, & who is or isn't accounted for, the Conrad Lint in plot 18 is his son William Conrad Lint [ born c. 1838]. The person in plot 19 (b.1832) should be his [William C. Lint's] 2nd wife Sarah Beset. The Cathrine (plot 16] should be his [William C.
