[NI049568] THE LATE ADAM HOLSOPPLE A Man of Probity, Wisdom & Justice--Tribute from a Friend. The TRIB has already printed an obit of the late Adam Holsopple, Esq., of Paint Twp., Somerset Co., but we gladly give place to the following communication: The venerable Adam Holsopple expired at 15 min.s of 8 am Wed. Jan. 30, 1889, aged 79 yrs 1 mo. & 19 dys, at the residence of his son Edmund. He was the only survivor of the Holsopple family. He was afflicted with a paralytic stroke in June,1886, which rendered him helpless, so that he could not move without being assisted. He did not suffer physically & retained all his faculties to the end, & with perfect resignation, awaited the final summons. He was born in Greenbrier Co., WV, Dec. 11, 1809. His father died in the War of 1812. He came with his widowed mother, 3 bro.s, & 4 sis.s, when he was 6 yrs of age, to what is known as the "Holsopple farm," near what is now Bethel Station. During his boyhood there were no schools in the vicinity, & his schooling consisted of 42 dys; being obligated to walk 6 mi.s morn. & even., beside attending to his daily chores. After his schooling he taught quite a number of terms of school. When quite young he connected himself with the German Reformed Church, & has ever since been a consistent member. He was married in 1835 to Miss Salome Lape. He was the father of 13 chldrn, in the order named: Helena, deceased, wife of Henry Ream; Lucinda, wife of Michael St.Clair, of Braddock; Edmund, at whose home he died; Isaiah, of Hillsboro, Somerset Co.; Flora, widow of Hiram Geiser, of Paint Twp.; Philemon E., of Upper Yoder, Cambria Co.; Adam L., of Goshen, Ind.; Adeline, wife of Jacob Custer, of Hillsboro; Simon P., of Paint Twp.; Eve, wife of Jeremiah Spigler, of Kring's Station; Salome, wife of Jackson St.Clair, of Morrellville; & Charles F., of Johnstown. He had 69 grandchldrn & 9 great-grandchldrn. He was a man of exemplary habits & strictly honest. He was elected Justice of the Peace in 1840. He served in that official capacity for 45 yrs. His ability, good sound judgment, & mode of conducting the office brought people from a distance to seek his advice. When a case was given in his hands he would counsel them to settle their difficulties. If so, he would throw off his cost, give them their dinners & "horse feed", & send them away happier & wiser. In this way he saved people thousands of dollars, & sent but 9 cases to court in 45 yrs. He was widely known & very popular throughout the Co. & did nearly all of the public writing for a number of yrs in his community. As a politician he always took a very prominent part. During the days he was a member of that party, & after the formation of the Rep. party he was a firm advocate. He was a leader of his party in his district, & the saying was "As Squire Holsopple votes so goes Paint Twp.." For this reason he was sought for by all the candidates of his party, & at his promise they could rely on Paint as being safe for them. He also served on the Board of Co. Auditors & quite a number of yrs on the School Board. He was a farmer by occup., & resided within 4 mi.s of where he was raised. He was physically very stout, & could turn his hand to almost anything. He always did his own wagon-making & blacksmithing. Through his extreme liberality & way of contributing he did not succeed in amassing a fortune. He was very neighborly, having lived so long in the same place, made a host of friends & loving relatives. These were what Squire Holsopple counted as his "wealth." Copied from The Johnstown, PA Daily Trib published (probably) in Feb. of 1889. NOTE: This was a photocopy of an old newspaper clipping in the possession of the late E. Ben Custer, of Elton, Cambria Co., PA Holsopple, Adam Jan 30, 1889 Aged 79 yr. 1 mo 19 days

[NI049732] not positive Jacob belongs with these parents Michael Smoke has Jacob 1847-1848 son of Samuel & Sophia Seese, Donna Knup has Jacob 1847-1886 h/o Adeline, son of Samuel & Sophia Seese. However, this Jacob is a direct ancestor of Tom Camfield, Tom has him married to Catherine Lehman, d/o Joseph Lehman & Anna Livingston, but Linda Branan has 13 chldrn for this couple & doesn't list Catherine. In the burial records of Berkey Cem., Jacob & Adeline are buried right next to Joseph & Margaret, most likely (but not positive) Rodenhafer. Joseph is a son of Jacob & Catherine Holsopple, they have a son Jacob for which no one has data. I originally had him married to Sarah Kimmel & Jane Thompson, but further inspection was that these women were of one generation earlier & married to a Jacob who was son of another Jacob & Catherine. I will need to look for an obit, & also for census records - must not have been in Paint in 1850, Michael, John & Samuel are the only Custers shown there.[Brian Cartrwight, 28 Aug 1998] There is no death record in the Johnstown Trib, but 1870 census data received from Lori Jean Shaffer shows John & Polly with 23 yr old Jacob & 19 yr old Adaline in their home. This looks convincing.[Brian CARTWRIGHT, 18 Sep 1998]
