[NI077255] Johnstown Trib, May 5 1932 EDWARD CUSTER DIES AT HOSP. 7th Ward Resid Was an Official of Custer & Son, Brick Firm. Edward Custer, aged 55 yrs, who was one of officers of Custer & Son, brick firm, d of appendicitis last night at Mem Hosp, where he underwent an operation on Tue. He became ill last wk at his residence, 616 Pine st, 7th Ward. He was identified with one of oldest families of Conemaugh, where he was b Oct 1877. He was s/o Martin Custer, pioneer merchant of Conemaugh, who passed away in Nov 1914. His mother was Elizabeth (Osler) Custer. Her death occurred in Nov 1927. 2 bros of Edward Custer preceded him to grave. Daniel in Nov 1920, & Ephraim in Jun 1923. Edward Custer was life-long resid of Greater Johnstown & for many yrs was prominently identified with community life of Conemaugh, having serv as memb of boro Council there & as Director of former Conemaugh Deposit Bank. Some yrs ago, Ephraim, Fred & Edward Custer succeeded their father in business, Edward remaining memb of firm until 1923, when he was made Sec-Treas of firm of Custer & Son. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Elda (Peoples) Custer, & 1 son, Martin Custer. He also leaves 2 sis' & 1 bro - Mrs. Etta Capstick, Mrs. Minnie Snowden & Fred Custer, all Conemaugh. Funeral servs will be at Custer home at 3 pm Sat by Rev. Dr. H.A. Bailey, pastor Moxham Presby Ch, of which deceased was communicant, having transferred his membership from Conemaugh congregation when he located in 7th Ward. Bur Grandview Cem.

He served in the rev. war & after loosing the greater part of his property through depreciation of the continental money, at the insistance of his son-in-law Jacob Good, Hagerstown, MD, he came to Brothersvalley twp & settled on 200 ac.s of land which had been warrented to Good in 1775. The land is now the farm of Daniel Fritz, g-son of Christian W. He was the father of 5 chldn: William who m. Elizabeth Palm, Valentine who m. Susan Palm, Eva, Dianah & Margaret. William Fritz was the father of 11 chldn: Adam, John, Elizabeth, Sally, George, Polly (m. Rev. L. Gerhard), Henry, Rosanna, Daniel,Lydia & William. Daniel Fritz m. Mary A. Chorpenning. Chldn: J.Harry, Josiah W., Uriah, Simon P., Eliza, Jerome F. & Franklin A. The eldest J.H. Fritz served 3 yrs as county surveyor; he was principal of the Somerset schools in 1881-1882 & afterward principal of the 24th ward schools in Pittsburgh. Uriah Fritz was a pvt in Co.F, 142nd regt. PA Vols.; mustered in Aug 29 1862; captured at Gettysburg Jul 1 1863; d. at Andersonville, Oct 19 1864.

[NI077577] The 1st coal mine in Shade Twp. was opened in 1820 by George Lambert. The mine was located on the west side of Little Shade Creek abt 1,200 ft. south of the Central City line along Rt. 160. This C-prime coal was mined until 1904 under succeeding ownerships of George Lambert, Jr., Noah Blough & Rollin Baldwin.

Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon, the cortege to leave the home 3 pm for the New Paris Methodist Ch.. Rev. Snyder will officiate & will be assisted by Rev. Thomas Mickel, pastor of the Ch. of the Breth.. Interment will be in the Schellsburg Cem., under the direction of Vernon, Geisel & Shank, mortician.

Went to Franktown, OH with his bro.s & parents. 1809 moved to Washington Twp, Franklin Co., OH, 1 mi. west of Dublin. 1806, 1807 & 1814: Tax list of Franklin Co., OH, Range 16, Tract 17, Section 4 & Range 20, Tract 6, Section 3. 1807 Old Northwest Quarterly: 22 Apr 1807, he m. Elizabeth, By Arthur O. Harra, Justice of the Peace. May have gone to IL in 1824 with 2 oldest chldrn.

[NI077942] John stayed behind for several yrs after father & bro.s went to OH in 1798. He went in 1808/1809. Ran the Sells & Ebey Saw & Grist Mill, also built a sawmill on Indian Run after War of 1812. Started a distillery & Hat Factory in Dublin. In 1817 was elected Justice of the Peace, Washington Twp, Franklin Co., OH.

[NI077944] Poled up Scioto River with bro. Peter to Dublin, OH. He was 1st of family to go to OH, liked it so well that he sent for his father. He was a farmer & also had Pottery at Columbus. He was one of contractors to dam up the Scioto River & build a canal. This started 30 Apr 1827. He was a marshall of Columbus. Rebecca was m. before & had a chld, Benjamin adopted Catherine & gave her the Sells name. Both are buried at Greenlawn Cem., Columbus, OH.
