[NI166803] MD Census of 1776, a resident of St. John's & Prince George's Parishes. He is 55 & Elizabeth is 42. There are no other white females in the household. The other white males are aged 18, 15, 75 & 18. There was 1 male slave & 2 female. Brumbaugh, MD Records v.1, p.54; Carothers, 1776 Census of MD, p.129 (except for a reference to "four negroes"). Also, his father, Charles would have been 78, so the elderly male could be Charles.

[NI166850] G.L. GLASGOW, postmaster & merchant of Glasgow, this co, s/o John & Sarah (LEAMER) Glasgow, & b on old homestead, Reade Twp, this co Oct 8 1844. His ggfather, John Glasgow, the 1st of family to locate in Amer, was memb of prominent numerous family from Glasgow, Scotland, he emigrated & located near what is now kwn as Bellwood, Blair co, then Huntingdon co. He was pioneer settler in that locality, & m Miss Hunter, & to this union 10 sons, one son John b Blair co then Huntingdon co, & resided near present location of Altoona. Abt 1818 he purchased a tract of woodland containing 200 acs, near presant village of Glasgow now stands, & became one of earliest settlers of Reade twp, formerly White twp, Cambria co, where he resided until his death in 1845. When he removed to above locality his nearest neighbor was 3 mis away. The settlement of which he was pioneer was named for him, as is also present village & post-office of Glasgow. He m Miss Bell, Blair co resulted in birth of 2 sons & 4 daus: Mrs. Eliza Noble, deceased; Mrs. Jane Smiley, deceased; Mrs. Hannah Shofi~, Osceola, Clearfield co; Mrs. Mary Ann Calderwood, deceased; John, father of our subject, now deceased; & James, deceased. John Glasgow, father, was b near where Altoona now stands, Jan 12 1817, & d Jan 12 1881. Being reared a farmer boy, he adopted avocations of his father, & followed farming all his life. He owned a farm of nearly 200 acs, & besides his farming pursuits, engaged in lumbering quite extensively. He was a very successful business man, & in industry accumulated considerable wealth. He was memb Luth ch. He m Miss Sarah, d/o George Leamer, Reade twp, & b 8 chdn, 3 sons & 5 daus: Mary Jane, w/o James McKEE, Marion, Clearfield co, PA; G. Glasgow was reared on paternal acs, educ common school of twp, & remained on farm until he was abt 23 yrs old; abt than he went to Allemansville, Clearfield co, PA & accepted position as clerk in general store of H. Alleman, He remained there as clerk 1 yr, & then purchased an interest in store; at end of next yr he disposed of his interest to Mr. Alleman, & took a trip west, looking for a place to locate; unable to find a suitable opening, he returned home, & followed farming for next 2 yrs. In spring of 1873 he went to Dubois, PA, and formed partnership with J. M. Troxell. They opened general store under name of Glasgow & Troxell, & Mr. Glasgow was appointed postmaster of the place, he held 2 yrs. In 1876 Mr. J. B. ELLIS purchased entire store, & Mr. Glasgow returned to old homestead, where he remained while building his present home in Glasgow. He opened a general store at above place & has since built the store-room now occupied by C. E. Troxell & Co., of which firm he is partner. In 1892 he built his present commodious business house, a 2-story bldg, 24 x 60 ft. Here he keeps a well selected stock of general merchandise. He is man of much business ability, by discreet & judicious methods has established a lg & increasing patronage. In 1876 a post office was granted to Glasgow; Mr. G. L. Glasgow became postmaster, & has held the office continuously to the present time. In politics he is identified with Rep party & has always taken an active interest in political affairs, & has serv as school director 3 terms. He is charter memb Coalport Lodge, No. 574, F. & A. M., Coalport, PA & memb Allemansville Lodge, No.900, IOOF, of which he is treasurer. He is prominent & consistent memb Luth ch, in which org he has been an officer for 20 yrs. Oct 8 1874, he m Miss Julia L., d/o John Ellis, native of Wales, who emigrated to Amer, & located near Ebensburg, PA. To this m 4 chdn b: John, deceased; Bertha O.; Luther E.; & Sarah M. [NI166853] THOMAS GORE was b Mann's Choice, Bedford Co, PA, s/o John & Catherine (MOWERY) Gore. Catherine Gore was b 1792, & d Oct 18 1880, d/o John Mowery, who had m Miss HILLIGAS, Montgomery Co, PA & located near Mann's Choice. The Hilligas family was a noted one. MrsMowery's sis m Mr SCHELL for whom Schellsburg was named, & the Schells of Somerset are of the same family. Mr Thomas Gore has been an active man. He was an asst in bldg of Old Portage RR, & was afterward fireman on the same rd. He blt the section boat "General Scott", of which he was owner & capt for many yrs, running between Pittsburgh & Philadelphia along the old PA Canal.

[NI166854] Amanda Jane Mitchell, who became the w/o Thomas Gore. She d Mar 29 1891. Mrs Gore was eldest dau of James H Mitchell, who is remembered by the business men of a half century ago. She was b Ligonier Valley, where most of her life was spent until she removed with her father to Johnstown. Here she m 1848, to Thomas Gore, who survives her. She was mother of 8 chdn, of whom 7 are still living. As one who knew her well expressed it: "Mrs Gore was a humble & consistent memb of ch from her 14th yr. Of a retiring & unselfish disposition, she was always more thoughtful of comfort & welfare of others than herself. She was constantly doing good by those little acts of kindness & love to her friends & neighbors which won a place for her in the hearts of all who knew her. In family circle her life was one of love & unselfish devotion. She knew in whom she trusted & leaves a "blessed memory". [NI166902] ALEXANDER B. PRINGLE, a representative of one of old families of this co., s/o William & Elizabeth (BOLWINE) Pringle, b Croyle twp, this co, Sep 17 1829. His paternal gfather, Philip Pringle, was b eastern part of this State, but at an early day, with his bro George, settled in wilderness near what is now kwn as Pringle Hill, & from these 2 bros have sprung numerous family of that name in this co. Pringles are of Scotch extraction, whilst Bolwines are of German origin. The mother was b Somerset co, PA, in 1801 d/o Henry Bolwine, native of Germany, but one of the early settlers of Somerset co. William Pringle, father, was b Croyle twp, reared & lived there all his life, dying March 20,1895, age 97 yrs. His was truly a pioneer's experience, living in that section at a time when the woods were filled with deer & bears, in the hunting of which he was an expert. His avocation was necessarily that of a farmer & lumberman. Alexander B. Pringle was reared on this old pioneer homestead, where he received advantages of a common-school edu. He remained upon the farm until 1861, when he took a position with PA RR Co. as a freight conductor between Altoona & Pittsburg, remaining until 1864, when he enlisted in the serv of his country in the Civil War. He joined Co D, 5th reg't, PA Heavy Artillery, in which he serv until close of war. After the war he again entered the employ of PA RR Co as a freight conductor, & continued in this until 1873, when he purchased a farm in Summit Hill twp, this co, & followed pursuits of agriculture until 1884. Upon the latter date he removed to Conemaugh, where he has lived comparatively a retired life ever since. He is owner of a large apiary, in the care & cultivation of which, as a pastime, he devotes much of his attention. He is the owner of considerable realty in the boro of his adoption. In 1855, he m Sarah, d/o William BARNETT, of this co, & to this union b 5 sons: William N., a practicing physician, of Johnstown; Allison A., a physician of South Fork, this co; Harry B., a resident of Conemaugh & an engineer of the PA RR Co, & Charles W. & Edgar E., engineers of the same co, also living at Conemaugh. Mr. Pringle has for 50 yrs been a consistent memb UBC, & belongs to Emory Fisher Post, No.30, GAR, Johnstown. John & George were twins; the former is night watchman, in the employ of the PA railroad company, at Altoona, PA, & the latter was a farmer, late, of Jackson Twp; Hannah married Joel SIMMONS, a farmer of Jackson Twp. [NI166908] Solomon Wagner started in life as day laborer, & by his own efforts, untiring industry & honorable business methods, has acquired fair amt of this world's goods, & today finds him in a position of comparative ease & affluence. In 1877 he engaged in blacksmith business at Fairview, but 1 yr later abandoned that business to engage in pursuits of husbandry, & owns a farm of 121 acs, adjoining Glen Glade. In 1886 he engaged in manufacturing lumber, & now owns a saw & planing mill, the annual product of which amts to abt $3000. Aside from farming, lumbering & milling, he owns a valuable tract of coal land, situated near Glen Glade, & containing 177 acs. He mines & ships ea yr abt 100 carloads of coal to Ebensburg, whilst abt 20,000 bushels per annum are consumed by local trade. D. W. Dunwiddie, Philipsburg, Centre co, PA, has leased a part of coal land, & is now putting in a siding which connects with PA RR, & the ensuing yr will see output of his mine greatly increased. Mr. Wagner also owns another tract of land of 56 acs, Jackson twp, & 6 houses in Glen Glade. He is a rep, & has serv as memb of school board. On Feb 19 1871, Mr. Wagner & Miss Rachel SHUMAN m & they have 6 chdn: Caroline, w/o Herman KROUSE, Glen Glade; Mary C., w/o William Krouse, Glen Glade; Hannah, consort of John WILKINSON, Jackson twp; Harriet, William E. & Daniel W., are at home. Behan from 1926 until 1956. On retiring she returned to Dunlo to care for her mother. In Jul of 1977 she moved to Johnstown where she resided until Aug of 2000 when she moved to Bedford Colonial Courtyard. Miss Fox was an avid golfer; spending much time playig at Windber Country Club.
